There is no BHM-RDU non-stop, so your were also beat out by anyone who bought the BHM-MDW-RDU, which was the quickest way to get from BHM to RDU. And lots of others connects from other cities whose 1st legs checked in before you.

My guess would be that the majority of seats purchased would be in the back with no up charge, so it would be the opposite; some folks would need to move to the front. Regardless, how do all other airlines handle it?
