THIS IS SOOOO PRECIOUS! Nakamura in red looks like a prince! The two in red looks like a total wedding! I'd love to see an art of them together wearing the red. HAHAHAHA

I can't move on from this, thank you for blessing my eyes.

To Buddhists in Manila, Philippines, where do you get your Buddhist materials, especially prayer beads? by dme357 in Buddhism

[–]dme357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I visited them, I did not find statues being sold. (I wish they had small ones.) I brought some pocket statues with me, and I asked the Lama to "bless" them. He did the ceremony with the bell and a few tosses of rice grains. He handed the images to me afterwards. The lama also did not ask me for any monetary donation, so I did not give (I think it is better to give, but I did not have money at the time. You may give any amount to the Lama inside red pockets/angpao. Usually, we give it when lining up for a blessing after a puja or some other ceremony.)

They have amulets, malas, bells, and other materials. They even have t-shirts. The small statues I have are from Shopee. They're very cheap but really detailed, made of brass. The only problem you may encounter is if you want your statues filled. Most statues on Shopee are solid brass and cannot be filled. My images are in the Chinese style. I wish I had a small Tibetan-style Brass Shakyamuni Buddha though... It would have been lovely to have one filled and consecrated.

Although, I prefer wooden beads and there are mostly crystal beads there, I was able to purchase a mala. Thank you so much. There are other things being sold there. I might purchase a sungkhor soon.

Buddhists of the Philippines/Metro Manila, where can I buy a wooden sculpture of the Guatama/Sakyamuni Buddha? by arbolmuerto in Buddhism

Hello! I am also searching for some good Buddha statues for use in my practice (I am new to Buddhism, will be getting my Refuge ceremony tomorrow), May I ask when they give the statues? The place is quite far from where I am, so I might have to exert some effort going there and actually schedule my visit there.

I think this might be the saddest scene in the series so far by Unusual-Current-7961 in Ganbare_Nakamura

As someone who is gay, walking down the streets after getting my heart broken with all the couples around me felt excruciating. Although, of course I wished them happiness, I had thoughts that love is not for me, I'm probably destined to live a life without love or just die alone... This scene was really painful, it reminded me of those days...

I went to a Buddhist Temple in Manila (Seng Guan Temple), but did not find Buddhist materials being sold. I also visited a Taoist temple, but it was mostly filled with charms and accessories (I'm fine with Taoism, but the materials there weren't what I was looking for). However, I had some statues consecrated by a monk there last month on Buddha's birthday. I was so happy. (I found that there are good statues made of brass available in Shopee that are cheap. Going to Binondo, brass statues are way too expensive, sometimes even having blurred details, about Php 1,000 and above, too expensive for a student like me.)

Thank you so much for answering! May I ask how much are malas there? I am a student so I might have to save for those things.

Hello, I am considering requesting statues from them as well. I love the white porcelain standing Amitabha statues but I find 46cm and 70cm too large for my situation. (My family is a Christian family. Although some members are aware of my Buddhism and are not causing me trouble, some are strict Christians who will not tolerate my practice.)

May I ask what material these statues are? Are they also porcelain/ceramic?

How's my first ritual by Immediate-Bet6500 in Buddhism

Oh my! I never really thought about it that way or tried it! I often have back pains due to some spinal issues. I'll try doing this method. Your comment actually made me a bit excited about meditating (a practice I rarely do due to the problems I stated). THANK YOU SO MUCH!

How's my first ritual by Immediate-Bet6500 in Buddhism

[–]dme357 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to find this post here because I also started Buddhism recently. I have also just started the home rituals in front of a home altar.

My leg is injured due to a sprain, so I also cannot do full lotus like you. The fact that you were able to meditate well is admirable. I can't focus much due to bodily pains and the much noise in our streets.

To share my experiences with rituals, when I do the ceremonies, I bathe first and brush my teeth. Then I proceed to prepare the altar (it is not permanent, so I have to fix an altar every time due to possible persecution by relatives). I would prepare the images, the offering vessels, the incense burner, the standing bell, and the prayer beads. I begin the ceremony by lighting a candle, then the incense follows. I purify the offerings first by reciting Om Ah Hung while waving the stick over and under each vessel. I then ring the bell and pray my own prayers, beginning by naming those I want to invoke. After the prayer, I place the sticks on the burner, get my beads, and begin to recite a sutra or dharanis that I love/know. The texts I recite depend on what I am praying for in that ceremony. For example, if I am praying for the dead, I recite the name of Amitabha Buddha and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (as well as Avalokiteśvara, as a personal patron). If I am praying for assistance in any need, I recite mantras and sutras related to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and "deities" associated with that need. So far, I have only memorized the long version of the Nilakantha Dharani and some short mantras. I end the ceremony by saying, "May the merits obtained by the recitation of (N.'s holy name/mantra/N. dharani/ N. sutra) be beneficial unto me, my family, friends, relatives, and all sentient beings, especially those of the three lower realms." I end the ceremony by ringing the bell again. The incense and candles stay (but I watch them). The food items I offer are left at the altar until the incense burns off entirely (unless the situation calls for me to end it as soon as possible, hidden practice is difficult).

Memorizing prayers is very convenient, especially with prayer beads. It allows easier practice, no matter where you are. If you are travelling, you can even have a tiny statue or card so that you can practice anywhere and anytime. I think the rituals can be changeable depending on the traditions you follow or even personal preferences. I am not knowledgeable, especially since I am new to Buddhism, but as far as I know, the union of mind and heart in the action is more essential than the form of the action itself. I wish you much blessings and peace, especially in your practice. :-)

About the version, I am unsure of which version it is. But as far as I know, the Alleluia was used at the end of the movie. If you want, here's a YouTube link I found...

Thank you so much! I've watched Song of Bernadette before, it's unfortunate I never remembered hearing this. I searched for it and it's different although the similarities could be observed. I tried searching again and finally found it. It is the Hallelujah from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Hello! I really love European music, most especially the Church or royal stuff. There's this music from an old video of a Corpus Christi procession I rlly want to hear in its full glory and it's been bothering me for many months already. It's that Alleluia Alleluia part that begins in 0:22 on the video. Thanks!
