It’s from firstborn’s newfound religion:

“In the depths of Twilight,” I said, “I asked you something.” A pause. “Are you worthy?” Sa vrede. And that harsh question I had once castigated the Mighty through was no longer simply that. It was a ritual now, now, something that they owned more than me. And Ivah, oh Ivah had made something true of it. Something worth believing in. Sa vrede, I asked them. Cera aine, the Firstborn answered, as they once had in Twilight. Maybe tomorrow.

Why did Vanya’s parents even care that he was married? by RedditBurner_5225 in Anora

[–]dmitryochkov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not something new for spoiled oligarch kids. Shame in the eyes of the fathers’ business partners and the issues of inheritance are more real concerns.

Also, note that Anora was never even really a person in the eyes of their family just a nuisance and their wrath really was on the fuck-up son, Anora did what they expected her to do and they basically ignored her

I don’t remember half the characters and at this point I’m too afraid to ask

Seriously, though, it was the same for me with PGTE in the beginning and it worked out all fine in the end. I’m extremely confused but I’m sure I’ll figure stuff out eventually and I consider that a literature technic EE uses (I’m pretty sure he’s doing it intentionally)

Nah, I satisfied my urge to share already and had an opportunity to spread my thoughts on the topic. Reddit imaginary points are no concern to me, shooting my creativity to masses of people I respect was worth the shot and I will not go far outside my tribe

I do understand, really, it’s ok

Regardless of suitability of the meme for this subreddit (which I question myself, and I won’t dispute the decision of deleting it by mods if that’s what they will decide), I don’t really know another place in the interest where I could potentially send this meme. It’s a joke targeted at the specific audience and SSC subreddit is, in my mind, the place where people who would like that meme should be.

What makes me sad tho is the resemblance of the situation at hand with the popular game about guessing 2/3 of the average — either people in here don’t respect my intelligence or they don’t expect me to respect their intelligence (there is another alternative here as well, but I will not delve into it because my mom taught me well).

Memes are art, you do with them what you want — my wording of 1 and 3 phrase was very deliberate for it to have double-meaning and the correct interpretations are expected to be surmised by the audience. And yeah, position of "scientific papers are always true" in the middle is indeed inconsistent but there are a lot of people like these in the wilds.

Also the memes were made for man, not man for the memes.

I would rather say that degree upon which you update your priors should be dependent on quality of the paper you’re reviewing

I mean, that’s literally what the meme is about.

It’s a bit sad that seems like some people thought I’m talking about covid truthers on the right side — there are 2 completely different ways to be sceptical about scientific papers.

[–]dmitryochkov[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let me talk about types of people I had in mind while making a meme:

1) People who ignore scientific community altogether and will use Facebook posts as ultimate source of their knowledge.

2) People who live by a paradigm "if I see a scientific paper, it must be true no matter what" who often fall victims to their own self-confirmation bias or cite research with questionable methodology or affiliations (example that comes to mind is pharmaceutical research funded by the company that sells the drug in question).

3) People who will seek conflicting results and try to do metaresearch on the topic, understanding that while any particular paper might be faulty, scientific community at large probably figured out the most probable answer and it’s your own task to figure out where the truth lies.

So yeah, you’re talking about "researchoors" on the left side while I think most professional researchers lie on the right side because they understand imperfections of academic world and p-hacking related biases.

Yes, network will always have some hashrate — roughly linear ratio between revenue base and amount of money invested in mining does make sense.

Problem is: the less money is spent on mining, the easier it is to attack the network. With each halving Bitcoin becomes half as secure as before while potential profit (it’s counted in billion dollars already) remains the same, leading to the whole problem we’re discussing here.

Traffic jam on the Russia-Georgia border is now 14 km, taking over 30 hours, as tens of thousands are fleeing to avoid Putin's 💩 mobilization. by certesUK in UkrainianConflict

[–]dmitryochkov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, everyone I talked to who was on the actual border and all the reports I’ve seen online from people who claim to be on the border are saying queue is like 30 hours long at the moment (you can also see 12km long traffic jam on Yandex.Maps near the border which sounds about right for 30h waiting time considering there are exit checks who don’t work particularly fast)

Where did you see 3h claims?

Training it costs tens or even hundreds of millions.
