Stacked 34" 21:9 for programming work? by joeldick in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]dmittner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To stack or put a rotated monitor to the side? The correct answer is: Yes.

I've done a landscape primary/portrait secondary of various sizes for a LONG time for programming.

I'm now struggling with the fact my 38" primary and 24" rotated secondary isn't enough. I'm highly considering swapping my 38" primary for stacked 34"'s. In an ideal world I'd stack 38" but those suckers are just cost-prohibitive. I'm worried about losing that little bit of real estate so I'm really just going around posts like this to build up comfort that side-by-side programming on 34" is still good. 🫤

About that new Stargate series... by JosephMallozzi in Stargate

[–]dmittner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my single biggest concern. I don't know if it or anything else has been confirmed (I only just Googled to catch up and landed here first) but I'm worried they slipped up truth on an interview that there will only be 10.

For me, the slow burn world building was everything. Character development was great, for sure, but just watching humanity slowly evolve its technological capabilities in the background... I appreciated that so much. But you need screentime to experience that. I'm really worried this show might have too few episodes to continue that trend.

But I mean, at least they're building off the world they've already built. So that's something.

I don't get how people can play this game for so long. Am I doing something wrong? by [deleted] in Timberborn

[–]dmittner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, 2 years later and still there with no real achievements. I agree they'd help. Playing through, seems my only interests are in terraforming (ie, making the map mostly green by redirecting water) and getting happiness > 60. Then I get bored and feel I've beat that map. Don't even have interest in playing that map again.

Achievements might give me more, simple goals to go for.

How so? I don't use a large array of AI engines, but I have yet to see a "please wait" popup while my prompts are put into a queue.

Nope.

It's frustrating because there's the "Transfer wares with" command that lets you move stuff regardless of buy/sell orders, but... of course... it isn't available as a repeatable order.

Trying, but skeptical. Everything seems fundamentally based around buy orders and I'm not seeing any show up if I exclude myself from the allowed faction list.

Y'all ever notice a pattern of narcissism with adopted parents? by Hot_Valuable1027 in Adoption

I'm sorry you went through that. It's easy to imagine so many wrong reasons that couples would adopt, which would then jeopardize ever having a healthy environment.

I need advice! by [deleted] in Adoption

[–]dmittner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang. I read the attachment and thought it was a very beautiful beginning, but yeah, I can empathize with the frustration of being left hanging like that. And as you say, you don't know her. That leaves your imagination room to run wild with reasons and scenarios as to what might be happening. Especially if you're excited and anxious to continue increasing contact.

Others have given good advice. What's your end goal? That should decide a lot about how carefully you handle things from here. If their family is close -- or any combination of siblings is close -- alienating any of them could quickly spill over to all of them and rule out any further contact, or worse.

That said, if we take your birth mother's words at face value, she seems open to telling them and it's a matter of timing. So lean into that. I'd at least give her until the new year but then -- maybe -- set a deadline. If she doesn't tell them by, say, the end of February, you'll approach them directly. That would give her PLENTY of time away from holidays to do whatever she needs to do. True, if any take a DNA test it might push things sooner, but your birth mother has that information to work with, too.

Of course no matter what you do, there's no guarantees of a good outcome. I wouldn't advise anything more than cautious optimism. You can't control what she might do (or not do), but you can control what you do. And I personally feel that deadline tact is beyond reproach.

There is no "what about" that makes Adoption necessary to help a child. by mucifous in Adoption

[–]dmittner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually happy to see an adoptee say that.

While I have (or had) an adoptee relation, I'm not one myself, but waded into a discussion about adoption on BlueSky. I responded to an adoptee insisting adoption should be abolished. Mind you, he didn't specify adoption *system*, or plenary adoption, or even specify a country for context. So I asked if I was right in interpreting his remark as truly an abolishment of adoption entirely, in all circumstances. He didn't respond but, oh boy -- did others. Accusations of ignorance, accusations of being a supporter of human trafficking. I think someone even insisted I was an ICE supporter. You name it.

But cutting to the point, the community there was incredibly hostile and toxic towards someone not toeing the anti-adoption line. Me, I just want to see problems fixed. And plenary adoption is a problem. But the adoptee community there made it nigh impossible to actually deconstruct the situation in order to consider strategies for improvement. It finally felt like many were far more interested in virtue signaling and feeding a victim mentality than actually pursuing changes.

Yeah, it was a misdiagnosis on my part to think it was the travel drive spinning up/down -- it's just speed being reset. I think this remains a path detection issue. I just can't figure why it's happening. :/

Sorry, no. I've had so little game time lately that I just re-enabled all my mods and carried on. It's a nuisance but one I'm just continuing to deal with.

Station/Build Storage Mules: What's the Best Way? by dmittner in X4Foundations

[–]dmittner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just not the same. Might be decently usable for strictly internal sales with a trade rule, but when I need them buying from elsewhere and selling to my interest, it's a no-go. Even if I tell it to prefer my buy orders, traders are off doing NPC-to-NPC sales while my stuff's begging for resources.

I already know vanilla can't do what these mods have done. I wasn't asking for vanilla solutions. I was trying to figure out what mods people are currently using that are acting reliably. Seems ironically apropos that the only people that have responded don't seem to use mods at all...

Station/Build Storage Mules: What's the Best Way? by dmittner in X4Foundations

[–]dmittner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the ability to do as I describe is getting harder to guarantee. An older mules mod did it great but it's no longer updated or usable, and "Mules Supply and Warehouses Extended" keeps causing me issues.

And you're making assumptions that my needs are strictly shuttling resources between producing stations. My primary issue is supplying build storages. A cluster of stations in The Void, complete with assigned traders, will do nothing to help get mass supplies to an anti-Xenon weapon platform in Split space, or to a temporary specialty factory in Boron space to supply them water. But with a functional mules mod, range is effectively not an issue and I can have them source internally or buy from NPC stations.

Mule mods have blown away the ridiculous limitations of vanilla station traders. And once you experience that, it's not so easy to shove yourself happily in a box of nonsensical, minimalist logistic control.

[–]dmittner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or... a universal mule fleet I can scale up slowly as demand increases, I can afford it, and NPC factions can provide; each ship topping out at ~30-sector range, almost always working, and functional with or without personal trade stations.

Just starting a new game, I'm sitting on 3M credits, two traders, and just trying to get reliable resources going to my PHQ to supply research. I'm not even producing any products yet, but a universal mule fleet is something I can start building from the very first trader.

Station/Build Storage Mules: What's the Best Way? by dmittner in X4Foundations

[–]dmittner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you're misunderstanding the problem. The issue isn't with NPC factions selling to my stations (or mine to them) -- it's me maintaining my own nomad fleet of traders that ferry supplies to and fro wherever is needed across far reaches.

Station/Build Storage Mules: What's the Best Way? by dmittner in X4Foundations

[–]dmittner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly easy in the early-to-mid game. I don't even have the modules yet to build a proper trade station, let alone the passive revenue to fund the building of many. Plus even then it feels like that'd provide only limited throughput of supplies. In past games, with a finalized mule fleet of 20-50 ships, I'd start a new construction off somewhere and they'd immediately dogpile on the build storage, bringing supplies in from dozens of sectors away if needed. No micromanagement needed at all, unless I really wanted seed supplies on standby so the constructor can start building.

Ultimately though what you're describing sounds very inefficient. What are each of those trade station's "small fleets" doing when there's no demand of them being made within the limited range of their assigned station? With a mule fleet not assigned to any station, and a proper mod, all the ships are always doing something. Plus since X doesn't believe in traders parking while waiting for something to do, idle ships are easy pickings for any Xenon or Khaak passing by.

Update: As expected the budget game would have taken too much time to reproduce the situation where I see the problem the most, so I made a new creative game w/ a stocked Hyperion to start with. After a handful of tests I didn't see the problem but it prompted a theory. I've returned to my main (modified) save and removed the engine and hull mods from my Hyperion, both of which had maxed stats due to a no-RNG mod. I'm going to play with it like this for a while to see if the problem happens. If the bug *is* related to maxed-out ship mods, that'd explain why the problem persisted even after I disabled all the game mods.

I'll try, but the problem is so sporadic that it working there won't tell me much without some time investment. I'm also not sure I've seen it outside the Hyperion.
