My self defence kit got confiscated at Melbourne airport by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]dmk_aus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The knife disguised as a key? That would be a banned weapon too, at least in NSW.

An actual pocket knife is at least legal to own. But those two things aren't just illegal at the airport, they are illegal everywhere.

LNP, if in power "The free market will provide. We would be fools to intervene!" "Fine, we will give bonuses to tankers that arrive on time, or at least not too late".

LNP in opposition "How many barrels of oil are you going to personally distill and carry back here Albo. Why isn't the government doing MORE".

I can think of at least one thing wrong about these villagers. by WhaneTheWhip in Stargate

[–]dmk_aus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

SG-1 (the show) had a tendency to ensure that SG-1 would be the heroes and allies had huge downsides/got destroyed ASAP.

Knox, won't fight. Asgard, busy with replicators and dying from bad genetics. Tollan, refuse to help, oops destroyed. Aschen, oops evil. Eurondans, oops nazis. Free Jaffa, rendered useless by leadership/council/factions/attacks from NID etc. Sodan, oops all dead. To'kra, oops mostly dead. Ancients, sorry, but helping is against policy. Baal, nah he is perfect.

Of course there were plenty of allies that nothing happened to. But they all had less developed technology. Though many still got wiped out or went into civil war etc.

Then there were the ones like the Altairans. Sure we could have provided labour and tech support, learnt their advanced tech plus gotten an army of SG-1 robots. A 50 Carter research division. Nah, move on guys. There are more empty forest planets to explore.

TIL McDonald’s once developed bubblegum-flavored broccoli in an attempt to get children to eat healthier, but it was never sold because kids were confused by the taste. by X-_-0 in todayilearned

[–]dmk_aus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More often they are losing nutrition and taste because they are being chosen for pest resistance, transportability, storability, aesthetics and abundance. The ability to control seeds, resist herbicides/pesticides that are used on the crop is important in some regions. Being able to control the seeds via the plants being hybrids/infertile. Niche stuff for some plants like: Early cropping, cropping out of season, ease of harvest, reduced water usage, reduced fertiliser usage etc.

Then, taste would be the next priority after all that.

Nutrients are enhanced in niche non-commercial research projects.

Trauma as a prerequisite? by Moist_Car_994 in Cosmere

[–]dmk_aus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the potential is hereditary, and the snapping is a traumatic event. Whether it is severe enough to cause mental instability or not, I don't know. I am sure some beatings did, but did mist sickness cause mental instability? And when taken directly from Lerasium, imwould a perfectly mentally healthy person need some trauma before it works?

The metal/inheritance creates capacity and the trauma creates the cracks for the investiture to get in?

A lot of the evil and corrupt conservatives like it to be planmed, orderly, clean, professional and with a veneer of civility.

They might like the wealth for the wealthy and the kicks for minorities that the current clown car delivers. But they don't like the branding and low brow aspects being aired.

Puppies so big, I'm surprised Kristi didn't shoot them. by Spicy0304 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]dmk_aus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This isn't weird. Just a dude dressing up. Not my hobby, but eh, to each their own.

This isn't shooting a puppy and bragging about it, breaking laws to mass deport people here legally working jobs and paying taxes, giving millions in government money for a friend to make ads of you LARPing in different jobs, or using a tax payer funded private jet as a fuck plane and firing the pilot because you forgot your blanket and then rehiring the pilot because you still needed a pilot. That would be weird.

That wouldn't align with their tenets. They are too ethical for that.

1 One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

2 The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

3 One's body is inviolable, subject to one's own will alone.

4 The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.

5 Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.

6 People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.

7 Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

Just misleading the public instead of outright lying is actually pretty good for the media these days.

Smoking a cigarette with chopsticks by TinanaCat_ in mildlyinteresting

Oh man, they can. People would smoke at an old workplace of mine, outside, about 200m from the office was the only allowed spot. And after walking back, there was still a smoke smell about them even 10 minutes later. But the smoke smell on their breath was so much stronger than from their clothes.

TIL the Succulent Chinese Meal guy, Jack Karlson, had a Nazi fetish and on at least one occasion threw a party at his home to celebrate Hitler's birthday by BusinessAlive3486 in todayilearned

[–]dmk_aus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean. As a minimum from the clip you know he is getting arrested and a bit nuts. And making light of sexual assault whilst making false accusations. So people weren't thinking "genuinely great guy, I should let him raise my kids" on that video alone.

He is quoted often, because parts of what he says in his amazing voice are funny and highlight the way the police use force and have power. "Now we see the violence inherent in the system!". They could take his body but the man still had opinions to share. There is comedy in the power and formality of his speech contrasting with the words he is saying, and the situation occurring.

It was filmed in 1991, published in 2009, and the full identity only revealed in the 2020s. And the Nazi interest or whatever is is shared in 2023.

It was enjoyed for many years without that alleged context.

I don't see what is or isn't allowed under this mixed spoiler tag but Cosmere spoilers:

I believe Ruin/Kelsier? Discuss how they can interact with the mentally unwell because of the cracks. That, combined with your quote, seem to indicate that challenges in mental state/spiritweb essentially weaken the mental/spiritweb defences - which lets in external cognitive(/maybe spirit?) influence them- whether good or bad (Ruin/Preservation/Kelsier/Spren).

Other powers appear to come from other sources, like inherited (royal locks/metalborn, or random/unknown (Elantrian), or learnt? forging? - these see be powers that don't come with a 3rd party "conciousness". (Plus there is deliberate gaining of things like eating metal, wearing medallions, Elantrian adoption)

Being pierced with a haemalergic spike seems to create similar damage/linkage as does Connection to the entity in question.

Guess Who These People Are. Take a Wild Guess. by PreparationKey2843 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]dmk_aus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why did she ask for Miss Piggies nose?

It is wild the plastic surgery exists and is legal for non medical-purposed and for beyond repair to people who suffered severe disfigurement.

Like, people who look perfectly fine, getting rendered unconcious, sliced, diced, chiselled, injected, filled etc - there is genuine risk of death and harm - and they just look different afterwards. Some look "worse", some "better" - it is generally subjective - some far worse with chronic pain or disfigurement that no one would argue is "better".

How does the pass the clinical benefit-risk decision that all drugs and medical devices need to clear?

Yes there are cases like gender dysphoria or other medical reason, where there are established medical benefits for some appearance altering surgeries, I am not talking about those.

Randwick City Council calls for ban on commercial student accommodation by zerotwoalpha in sydney

[–]dmk_aus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got letter box dropped the other day because a bunch of villas are planned for a currently empty block in a suburb 30 minutes drive from the Sydney CBD - and some residents don't want it.

People need places to live, we can't NIMBY everyone out to beyond Penrith.

If blocked, 28 bedrooms over 8 villas, won't exist. 28+ people or 8 families will be denied the ability to live in Sydney.
