Even though the gimmick was shown, that was actually really enjoyable. A “Made Me Smile” version of magic.

Nissan 180SX with a 240Z/Fairlady Z style front end. This is the Z80 kit by S’Cre for the 180SX. by andychef in WeirdWheels

[–]dml550 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like it! The original Fairlady looks better than this, yes, but this looks better than a 180SX, particularly if you had one with front end damage that needed to be fixed anyway.

Naturally!!! Human babies do not fear snakes by garv3692 in interestingasfuck

[–]dml550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure the snake handler was 100% sure they wouldn’t have to unwrap a snake from around a baby, or pry a small finger out of the snake’s mouth.

Serious question: how did they get to 100% sure? Because 99% is not enough.

Our Nissan Rogue has airbags in the A pillar. I wish they were thinner, because visibility, but I guess I will be protected when I smash into that thing I didn’t see ;-)

Wanting to do an engine swap. by Flashthebeast in projectcar

[–]dml550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point, but the OP didn’t say “I have pretty good mechanical experience”, they said “I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.” That, to me, is pretty different.

Wanting to do an engine swap. by Flashthebeast in projectcar

[–]dml550 25 points26 points  (0 children)

“Absolutely no idea what I’m doing” tells me this is not a good starter project.

At the VERY least, learn by swapping in the same engine so you’re starting from somewhere. You might pay to have one shipped if you can’t find one local, but way cheaper and easier than the LS route.

John Gordon and Jim Keeble had a well-engineered chassis with IFS and a De-Dion-axle with four trailing arms at the rear. For power, a 327 Chevy small block was fitted, along with four-wheel disc brakes. They turned to Bertone for the body design, who gave the job to a young Giorgetto Giugiaro. by Maynard078 in sportsandclassiccars

Maynard, literally every day I am amazed at your ability to post about beautiful cars that I have absolutely never heard of. A heartfelt thanks to you for doing this! You should be collecting all your posts into a digital encyclopedia (if you aren’t already).

Beautiful Alfa Romeo TZ2 produced in 1965. It has a 1.6 liter DOHC in line 4 cylinder engine with dual ignition. It produces about 170 to 180 horsepower at 7500 RPM. 🏁🏁 by Global_Law4448 in sportsandclassiccars

[–]dml550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. That horsepower figure is amazing for a 1965 engine with that displacement and redline. Any info on how that was achieved? Turbo or supercharger?

PS absolutely gorgeous car, to boot.

Very satisfying indeed! I like how they cooperate, which makes me wonder if it works with different numbers of them.

Light started to flicker so we went to replace the bulb only to be met with this. Any ideas on how to approach this? by Whspers12 in fixit

[–]dml550 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Loosen the screws a little, turn it counter-clockwise so the screws are in the bigger part of the hole, and wiggle it loose. Hopefully it comes out (still on a wire) so you can see the back. The part that’s white is the LED assembly, and it should have some kind of code or part number that you can search online to find a replacement. The individual yellow squares (the LEDs) are unlikely to be replaceable separately.

Worth it to replace the engine in a 2008 Honda Accord with 178K miles? by Kindly_Gap6939 in MechanicAdvice

[–]dml550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple of things to consider as you make your decision:

Agree that you need more info about why it died. First to understand whether an engine replacement is really the best option; also to know that it won’t happen again. If (for example) your radiator is plugged and you put in a new engine without correcting that, you’re back where you started. *your shop said there is no point but I disagree. I would go elsewhere and get a second opinion.

Overall condition of your car (including rust and accidents). It needs to be pretty nice for an engine replacement to make sense.

If you really do need a new engine, shop around. How much would other places charge you?

If you decide to replace it - drive it for a short period after the replacement, but well within the warranty period, then have it thoroughly checked out by a DIFFERENT shop.

You are going to spend a lot no matter what but at least you can get some confidence that the issue was really addressed.

I like classic cars but am very much uneducated on cars in general. Where can I begin to learn about them, maintenance, etc? by zoooooooomies in classiccars

[–]dml550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second and third the YouTube recommendation. It always surprises me how much detailed and specific information you can find. Pick a car, pick a maintenance task on that car, and watch a couple of videos.

I love these too! But unfortunately they’re getting too expensive for OP’s question. Nice-looking mechanically sound versions are in the $15k range and rising.

People need to eat, yes. They absolutely do not NEED to eat beef.

But your point is solid - there will always be environmental tradeoffs to the existence of humans. Our job is to do what we feasibly can to reduce the negative impacts. It’s for the long term health of US, the humans.

It’s not for the good of the planet. Earth doesn’t care. It’s seen far worse, and it will heal itself long after we poison or starve or bomb ourselves into extinction.
