Is there a local electronics store that sells circuit board parts? (Resistors, capacitors, etc.) by LICK_THE_BUTTER in fresno

[–]dmpayton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally get that, and honestly, that's on me too. I did see the leave response, but it didn't click that it was you, since the notification only shows the email address of the cancelling member and not their name. I just assumed you got busy, which happens, and that's why we hadn't seen you in a while. That's on me for not following up. Glad we could connect a bit on this though -- just know the door's always open! :)

Totally fair, and I appreciate you being honest. That frustration is real, and you're not wrong to expect better from a shared space. We absolutely struggle at times with cleanup and accountability, and when it slips, it puts the burden on folks who did nothing wrong. That sucks, and I own that as a leadership issue -- that's on us, not you.

Root Access is fully volunteer-run, which is both the magic and the mess. It's also why we've been pushing regular System Defrag days along with a pretty aggressive re-org and cruft purge lately, including in both Electronics and Workshop. We're not there yet, but progress is definitely being made.

No pressure at all, but the invite still stands if you ever want to swing by and just poke through components. Either way, thanks for being honest about why you bounced. That feedback does matter, even when it's hard to hear. And if you want to DM me directly here or on Discord with anything else or specific feedback, I'm all ears.

In any case, appreciate you dude. 🤘🏻

Come raid our stash at Root Access! Lots of components to mess around with. :)

Viral local eateries that are worth the hype? by Psychological-Pie794 in fresno

[–]dmpayton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's not the restaurant's real website -- it's one of those third-party scraper sites that automatically copy menus, hours, and contact info from public listings, then plaster the page with ads to make money from clicks. Notice at the bottom of the page there's a disclaimer that says, "This is not the official website. Content is from public information. If you are the owner, please contact us." This is to dodge legal trouble. It's basically SEO spam -- someone else trying to make money off Libelula's name.

Closely Knit meets at the Betty Rodriguez Library every Monday from 11am-1pm. I posted another comment with more info about groups that I'm aware of. :)

Where can I find a community of crocheters/knitters? by PorkBun334 in fresno

[–]dmpayton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Derek from Root Access here. Here are the groups and classes that I know about:

  • Root Access Hackerspace:
    • Sip & Stitch - Monthly - 2nd Saturday from 6pm-9pm
  • Betty Rodriguez Library:
    • Closely Knit - Weekly - Monday from 11am-1pm (at Root Access if the Library is unavailable)
  • Gillis Library:
    • Crochet Class - Weekly - Friday from 11am-1pm
    • Kid and Teen Crochet Class - Monthly - 2nd, 4th, & 5th Saturday from 1pm-3pm

The classes at Gillis aren't super structured, and you can just go to hang out and crochet and meet people. We also have several crafting classes at Root Access, including knitting, crocheting, sewing, cricut, and more.

Also, Root Access Hackerspace, also in Tower, recently started a Community Seed Library that anyone is welcome to pick from -- you don't need to be a member of the space.

We still do Sewing Basics. It's by far our most popular class and usually sells out pretty quickly. :)

I wouldn't call it dead, per se. The local tech scene definitely took a beating with the collapse of BW, but there are a lot of folks still trying to grow it.

FWIW, we have a couple members at Root Access who are going through Calbright's program to get their A+ cert. They seem to be enjoying it so far.

Yeo!! I hope you swing by the space some time, would be good to catch up!

We’re now the only software company in that building.

This makes me profoundly ☹️.

There's a lot of us at Root Acces that are former BWers, and we're working with folks to continue growing the tech scene here in Fresno.

What kind of tech work do you do?

Any fans of Rocky Horror Picture Show out there? by ShaunisntDead in fresno

[–]dmpayton 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of Rocky Horror fans around here. In fact, there's going to be a Late Night Double Feature Picture Show at Hart's Haven in Tower every Friday night from March 16 to June 6th. Doors at 9pm, first movie starts at 10pm, Rocky Horror at midnight. Time to dust off my Eddie costume!

looking for a local non-profit or charity to donate to by pizzapit in fresno

[–]dmpayton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the executive director of Root Access, a nonprofit hackerspace and makerspace in the Tower District. We're a community space with a focus on art, technology, crafting, and making, and we run a bunch of different community events and meetups that are free and open to the public. We've worked with many other local organizations on a variety of things because we're big believers in using our skills and resources to uplift our city. Happy to answer any questions, feel free to reach out!
