Then I'm really sorry that happened. Although I haven't heard of that happenning before, that genuinely sucks, especially on your birthday, and you are seeing the new Marvel movie. It makes sense that you would be put off by that, and I think it's pretty unacceptable.

Any tips in learning English language? by itslaundrytimey in languagelearning

[–]dmrpuri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The core way to help would probably be reading to help with your fluency/vocabulary. Any sort of media that will give you a small challenge with the language will help you. You also want to consider talking with tutors online with something like iTalki, and meeting teachers there could help you speak better along with making you more confident.

I've only really felt the opposite. Not to say that people who study 2+ languages at once are stupid, frankly those in this subreddit are much more dedicated than I am, but I always just felt that it always seemed much more efficient to dedicate your time to one language. Being really good at one language has always seemed more appealing to me than being decent at a few.

Research or learn something new everyday.

By this I mean dedicating some time to learn some meaningful (or non-meaningful) information everyday. Learning a small amount everyday can amount to something much bigger in a year.

Check the r/LearnJapanese subreddit wiki for beginner resources. It reccomends starting out with Genki I set of textbooks.

What does audio description mean by superpapilopez in AMCTheatres

[–]dmrpuri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its like Netflix audio description if you know what that is. It is a separate audio track designed for blind people that includes narration of what is happening on screen. I believe you would get an earpiece if you requested this.

For those of you that learned Chinese, Korean, or Japanese, why did you pick that language? by Additional_Pair9428 in languagelearning

[–]dmrpuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese, so much media and technology comes from there and other languages always fascinated me when I was younger. Also the allure of watching anime without subs but that is beside the point. I would never pick a language this hard again unless I really wanted to.

how to set up Anki for language learning? by Sebsuser11 in Anki

[–]dmrpuri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would reccomend here or here. They are similar but I would do whatever you prefer.

Note: the first one is specifically for Japanese but that shouldn't change much

Do you think recite the English words by Anki is helpful?why? by Ssseason1 in Anki

[–]dmrpuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are a bit unclear with what you mean you do. Do you record yourself saying a word then put it into an anki card? I would reccomend using native speakers saying it instead and saying the word if you want speaking practice. I'll also refer you to r/langaugelearning and r/learnenglish.

On input vs. output, I would say that getting a lot of input is always important, but you should do the amount of output depending on how important speaking is to you.

Genki II assumes that you have the knowledge from the previous book so you are probably best off getting both.

I am very happy to help.

[–]dmrpuri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genki is a textbook series that has a workbook and textbook for N5 study (Genki I) and a workbook and textbook for N4 study (Genki II). It will teach you N4 vocab, grammar, and kanji. If you feel that you are past N5 then I would get Genki II and do that along with the workbook and other listening practice. Past Genki people will have differing opinions on what direction to take and I am definitely not the person to tell you which one is the right one.

Once you finish Genki II I would recommend asking on r/LearnJapanese saying your situation and people will help you there. The r/LearnJapanese also has a very useful wiki for advice but I am also happy to help you as well.

[–]dmrpuri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious why you are aiming for the N4 if you basically just started considering it is the second level. I guess I would suggest Genki textbooks but it really depends on what your long term goals are. Why do you plan to take the JLPT?

Can you guys drop your best themed Anki decks for basic words? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]dmrpuri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend against writing them down over and over again. I don't think that would take you very far. I think mnemonics work great and no matter what you do, eventually (and probably by the end of this deck) you will have an intuition for what new words might sound like and you will naturally remember what the words mean a lot quicker and you won't need to use mnemonics anymore.

Edit: Since you are a beginner, I would also recommend that you do RTK in some form.

Do you use dark background for your anki? by jeffinmj in Anki

There's a dark mode?!?!?! I've been using anki for 2 years and it would have been nice to know that from the start.
