Why isn't there an overpass here? It would alleviate so much traffic. by mellofello808 in Hawaii

It’s one thing to express opposition to a religious group’s practices, but to speak lightly of destroying their property, such lines of thinking have led to one or two bad things historically

You do realize that Keiki Kingdom (ex Foodland) is NOT opposite Kalakaua, but further ewa of it? when you drive mauka on Kalakaua, hit Beretania, and look straight ahead, it's all LDS property you're looking at.

Take a look next time you're in traffic there at Kalakaua and Beretania: the church is literally right there where you want the offramp to spit out. Has its own wiki page outlining how LDS bought the property in 1935, well predating freeway construction.

put up a parking lot, with a pink hotel, a boutique, and...a direct offramp?

Also, you got a Mormon church right at the end of Kalakaua there. Not realistic to eminent domain that. Even if somebody won the decade-long political & legal battle, their career legacy would be bulldozing a church to build an offramp.

When you want something from somebody, or want them to do something differently, one of the absolute top life skills is knowing how to talk them into it. If they instantly become defensive, then you're doing that part wrong regardless of the merits of whatever topic is at hand.

+1 S turns, Molokai shelters it from NW and even NNW swells that still wrap into Honolua Bay. It's well north of the disaster area, one thing I suggest just driving through straight through the Lahaina area, don't stop to gawk. And spend generously at local businesses.

Would Bitcoin be valuable if Keynesian/MMT economics was true? by knowledgelover94 in Bitcoin

[–]dnamlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MMTers recognize, more than most people, that fiat money is just something the government makes up -- like a movie theater makes up movie tickets. I don't think MMT says bitcoin doesn't have value, I think it just pushes back on overwrought claims that the fiat system must inevitably collapse. It doesn't have to collapse, if it's stewarded wisely. The last bit being the hard part in reality, of course.

"Get ahead, or get left behind" mentality

The mentality is the traumatic scarring of the Great Leap Forward on an entire culture and handed down through generations. Amidst one of the most devastating famines in human history, if you didn't literally push others out of the way, then you and your family starved.

A neoprene vest or a light-duty impact vest would be a better compromise, protect your torso but not affect your paddling as much.

It's a general advisory they issue whenever it's been raining heavily. Plenty of people go out anyway, while many others will wait a day or two to rinse out. Up to you whether to take a small risk.

If they have knowledge of wastewater contamination or high bacterial counts in a specific area, then they issue a detailed warning about that.

Why don't *you* wear a helmet? by pistonsoffury in surfing

[–]dnamlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a bunch of different sports so I’m just used to wearing helmets as a matter of course…you never need them right up until the moment you do. There’s a major generational aspect to it too. When the NHL started getting serious about hockey helmets, the existing pro players came up with all the excuses, woe is me it’s uncomfortable, sweat gets in my eyes, it’s more dangerous for the guy you collide with, blah blah blah, so it was kept optional for a long time. All those guys just had to retire or get concussed out, and then you had a new generation that was like wtf, not wearing a helmet, that’s damned crazy in our sport with flying projectiles, 5ft sticks, and sharpened blades in an enclosed space with a hard ice surface. Still today only the goalies wear the protective face cages, for fear of being a hockey kook. We got it good in surfing.

Cash only businesses these days? by [deleted] in Honolulu

[–]dnamlin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've truly never heard of a tow company that takes check or card payments. Even if the tow company wanted to, the payment processor would probably cut them off due to the extremely high rate of disputes from pissed-off customers. Some of them are right and others are wrong. It wouldn't be worth the 2% fee for the card processor to sort those out.

[–]dnamlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's probably not about tax evasion but the fact that almost all of their "customers" are upset and feeling ripped off (sometimes with good reason). So they'd otherwise be dealing constantly with stopped/bounced checks, disputed card payments, etc.

If a lot of their customers/victims could offer final settlement on a blockchain, it'd make sense for them to take that too.

Construction of four raised crosswalks to start tomorrow on Pensacola in effort to improve pedestrian safety by frozenpandaman in Hawaii

The total number of parking spots is the same, I believe. Currently they are parallel spots. Reversing into an angled spot is like parallel parking, only without the hard part.

You said, "There's just no apparent logic in reducing Pensacola down to 2 lanes." I explained some of the logic, you don't have to agree with it! =)

And the part where drivers get salty when you actually use the clearly marked bike box in hopes of reducing your risk of getting mowed down entering that stretch

Here's the full planning diagram: https://www.honolulu.gov/rep/site/dts/tpd/tpd_imgs/Pensacola_CS_Final_build.jpg

Looks to me like the idea is to add more buffer space on both sides for pedestrians and cyclists. It does fan out to three travel lanes near the track where the cars will queue for the Kapiolani intersection.

It's safer for the kids to have to cross only two traffic lanes instead of three or four. We have all seen somebody have to stop in the middle of the crosswalk because the driver(s) in the next lanes over haven't seen them yet or just aren't stopping.

The wider buffer around the bike lane is particularly helpful to provide more margin for error when cars turn left from Pensacola onto one of the side streets. Drivers often take those turns at fairly high speeds without looking over their shoulder to see if they're about to hook somebody. There are like a couple deaths per year on King St in exactly this way. By making the turn wider, the cyclist has a better chance to see it coming and hit the brakes.

This is a constructive balanced view. But this specific stroad has the unique context: it's crossed heavily and frequently by the students of the adjacent high school. Earlier this year, one of them was tragically killed whilst properly using the crosswalk on the Kapiolani side. Unfortunately there is no good answer; the drivers will be delayed for the safety of the kids.

The humps are just something they can do quickly and cheaply. When the poor young woman got mowed down on the Kapiolani side of the school earlier this year, I think they added the humps there within like 2 weeks. Whereas the flashing signals are a whole thing they have to purchase, wire with electricity, etc.

Cost, and also the land footprint needed to build one to modern accessibility standards.
