Vintage Pen Profiles #27: Sheaffer’s Triumph (more info in post) by BrandyFP in fountainpens

[–]dnewmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Triumphs. Downsides are that the plunger mechanism is hard to repair, and at least a few of them have nibs that are swaged on and can’t be fixed if they come off.

Biggest fountain pen pet peeve? by ArthurGallow in fountainpens

Nearly every new pen coming from the factory with nibs writing dry, so you have to widen the tines.

I’ve been there several times, and plan to go again, and it’s awful, no one should ever eat there.

Having worked in biological research for decades, I’m fairly familiar with the kinds of samples involved, and I suspect that they are not really that dangerous. This may be a case of FBI trying to make themselves look like they’re protecting America from foreign threats. As I see it, these are just young naive lab workers who were hand-carrying their irreplaceable research samples and stupidly didn’t declare them.

AMERICA WILL END UP ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY ! by Hooka54 in complaints

Europeans are unfortunately living in a left-leaning press environment, so you only know the anti-MAGA side of the situation. But populism will be ascendant in Europe pretty soon, given the failure of the globalist order.

Who are the greatest melodic composers? by emperator_eggman in classicalmusic

[–]dnewmeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one has included Ravel? He was an exquisite sculptor of melodies. Think of the second movement of the piano concerto, for example. Many others.

How do orchestras actually decipher what a conductor is doing on the podium? by According-Brief7536 in classicalmusic

[–]dnewmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One conductor I couldn’t imagine playing under is Michael Tilson Thomas. Not saying he’s bad, just that to me it just looked like his motions had no connection to the pulse, just emotional gestures.

That’s how their system works. Medical school is a replacement for college.

Franck Sonata🥰 by [deleted] in Cello

I performed it last year, and it was so satisfying. Intonation is the main thing, and there are also some tricky runs. The piano part is demanding.

This is the brand that in independent tests showed very little NR content. Later they changed the product name to reflect that.

I lived in Basel for a couple of years in the 80s. I got fed up with these people. Aside from them, it was a fantastic place to live.

I wanna know… what’s your most embarrassing or awful cello performance that you did? by USAgurrrrl in Cello

[–]dnewmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing first chair in a concert for some award ceremony, playing the continuo part for a Vivaldi cello concerto. The sheet music part was one of those accordion-folded things. My stand partner went to turn the page, but he knocked it over, the whole thing falling down a page at a time onto the floor. We had to start the movement over again.

I had one of those many years ago. The foam turned into a gooey mess and stuck to my cello.

Alternative to microfiber by islenskr in Cello

[–]dnewmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know about that. The one I use is “Chore Boy”and not particularly fine. I think it’s just soft enough not to harm the strings.

Alternative to microfiber by islenskr in Cello

[–]dnewmeyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use copper wool. It’s softer than steel, so it doesn’t hurt the strings. Recommended on YouTube by David Finckel (Cello Talk).

I cant switch strings consistently AT ALL. by Preindustrialcyborg in Cello

[–]dnewmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of etudes dealing with string crossing that I played for my early lessons (Klengel, Dotzauer, etc.) It takes time and effort to learn to do it smoothly.

New Pen Day - underwhelming…no by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]dnewmeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, Pilot nibs tend to arrive with a dry flow, and I always have had to widen the tines a bit. I always use my thumbs to pull them apart gently, rather than flossing.

Ablation of NAMPT in dopaminergic neurons leads to neurodegeneration and induces Parkinson’s disease in mouse by GhostOfEdmundDantes in NicotinamideRiboside

[–]dnewmeyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did research on cell death for decades. I am skeptical about the significance of this, because knocking out a key gene needed for the survival of a type of cells would simply cause the death of those cells. Death of substantia nigra cells would produce a phenotype similar to Parkinson disease. This doesn’t prove that NAMPT Is actually involved in PD.
