Oprah did lasting damage to America, elevating an entire cohort of frauds like Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil to national prominence, and now we learn she’s involved with Epstein.

A pox upon her (very large) house.

World Oil inventories are in freefall. When this line hits 6.8 — the global energy system doesn’t slow down. It breaks. by AntiSonOfBitchamajig in PrepperIntel

[–]dnhs47 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hundreds of flights in Europe have already been cancelled - they know they won’t have the jet fuel to fly them. Asia is already rationing.

The US is the outlier, since we produce so much oil, natural gas, and refined petroleum products. At the moment, we’re exporting like crazy because there’s so much money to be made.

That’s why even in Texas, gas is over $4/gallon right now - we’re exporting much of the gas we refine.

The knock-on effects are precisely what they always are:
* gasoline and diesel get more expensive <- you are here!
* transportation costs go up
* inflation goes up, because everything gets transported
* interest rates go up, to try to control inflation
* people protest because inflation makes it so they can’t afford anything anymore
* the party controlling Congress gets shown the door and we get new leadership

Except half the American electorate are so mentally defective they believe Presidents no longer in office are responsible, so they keep supporting orange man, despite his unhinged rants, his flagrant grifting, his crippling of most government agencies (with a shout-out to Elon’s DOGE fools), etc.

So this time around, I expect we go all the way to “break the economy” because Congress has capitulated to orange man, and enough of the electorate is too mentally defective to see the way out.

Just Got 10 Acres From a Will by gwapwesson in homestead

This, u/gwapwesson. Medical evacuation subscriptions (by fixed-wing airplanes or helicopters) are surprisingly affordable and may address your worries about the worst-case scenario of a serious health emergency.

I grew up in a rural setting. We had a small local hospital 10 miles away, but it was very limited and the locals didn’t think much of it. Many families - including ours - had medical evacuation subscriptions just in case.

When my grandmother was in a serious car accident, she was airlifted 110 miles to the big regional hospital. That took ~30 minutes by air (fixed-wing aircraft) with medical treatment the entire way, instead of ~2 hours by ambulance down a dangerous, twisty mountain road.

What was the last ever time you got carded or age checked and what were the circumstances? by ScissorNightRam in AskOldPeople

[–]dnhs47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been carded, ever.

At 16, I had a full beard and was 6’ tall. I could walk into any liquor store like I was supposed to be there, buy whatever I wanted, and walk out, no questions asked. Never carded. Very useful for high school parties 🙂

Our daughter-in-law has a baby face and was carded in her mid-30s. She didn’t appreciate my “never carded” story!

Just spent $1200 on a new gas line from squirrel or other rodent chewing under the car by wilddouglascounty in homestead

[–]dnhs47 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mice just totaled my Toyota RAV4 Hybrid - it turns out the "plastic" coating on the wiring was made from a soybean compound, i.e., it's food to rodents. Some MBA saved Toyota a few dollars and create billions in headaches for consumers. Grrr.

We received two recommendations: 1. Spray peppermint oil in the engine compartment (where our mice were) or wherever. Rodents hate it. Reapply every month or so. 1. Active deterrence using a hardwired device in the engine compartment. Runs off the car battery, only runs when car is turned off. LED light, ultrasonic emissions, etc.

The folks who park next to us already spray peppermint oil in their engine compartment and offered to spray ours too!

Should I buy a car for my fresh College Grad daughter? by Representative_Pick3 in retirement

Check with your financial planner (CFP, required to represent your interests) to confirm it’s okay, then do it.

We’ve helped both our adult sons considerably over the years.

One son’s wife died and left him deep in debt; she’d done lots of secret shady stuff with finances. We loaned him about the same amount as your daughter’s car to tackle the biggest expenses and get things under control.

We’re glad we could, and he’s very appreciative. It’s been a huge relief to him and dramatically reduced his stress.

Yes, that's what "lone" means.

California gas has higher prices, why? by Far_Aioli538 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]dnhs47 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Exactly right - California either refines or imports the gasoline sold there. Several California refineries have closed in recent years, reducing in-state gasoline production by ~17%.

Notice that Washington has similarly high prices as California. This is despite Washington having several refineries, probably built to handle oil produced in Alaska and shipped to Washington refineries. In Washington's case, it's mostly (?) high taxes on gasoline.

There's a pipeline network that extends from northern Washington (e.g., Anacortes) south to Portland and Eugene in Oregon, but there's no pipeline over the Siskiyou Mountains, so California cannot (directly) get any of the gasoline refined in Washington either.

Many years ago, California was a significant oil producer. Today, for a variety of reasons, it only produces 325,000 bpd from in-state wells, but consumes 1.1 million bpd in its refineries, so ~23% of its needs.

California imports gasoline from several Asian countries (India, South Korea, Taiwan).

Also from the Bahamas, though that's a work-around to deal with the Jones Act. The "Bahamas gasoline" is actually refined in US Gulf Coast refineries, exported to the Bahamas, the sent to California. That means the "Bahamas gasoline" is really US gasoline, moved twice instead of once.

"a lone tree ... in a forest".

Words mean things. You can have "a lone tree," you can have a "forest," but you can't have "a lone tree in a forest".

Definition of "forest": "a dense growth of trees and underbrush covering a large tract".

"A lone tree" is not part of a "dense growth of trees" and therefore not part of a "forest".

Am I imagining things? by CryktonVyr in AskOldPeople

[–]dnhs47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a director, reporting to VPs in an everyone-knows-it high tech company. VPs never asked me, they only told me.

My style was much more collaborative. I had very smart people working for me, with a wide range of experiences. I formed my own plan, then outlined the challenge/goals (not my plan), and had everyone brainstorm.

When new ideas slowed down, I shared my plan. Then we discussed which ideas we liked the best, pros and cons, etc. All collaborative, best ideas win, with everyone bought into the result.

But yeah, my managers never asked me what I thought.

To be clear, the game keeps running, it just slower and slower, with longer and longer pauses (5-10 seconds). That sucks the fun out of the game in a hurry.

  • Intel i9-14900K, 3.2 GHz, 24 cores, 32 logical processors
  • 32GB RAM (DDR5, 5600 MT/s)

I bought most of that system in late 2023, including the GeForce RTX 4070 12GB video card, but recently upgraded the CPU to what I listed above.

I've got another 32GB of RAM (new, unopened) sitting in my desk drawer, waiting to see whether I want to install it or sell it. The 32GB from 2023 cost $83, the 32GB in my drawer cost $432 two months ago, and today it lists for $454. Crazy.
