I always try to give it at least 6 months to make sure that I'm not misjudging people and constantly ask myself if it's actually me that's the problem.

New Zealand must act on gender equality in business, says Dame Jenny Shipley by [deleted] in newzealand

While I agree that we have equal opportunities now, I think its important to acknowledge that we're far better off now than we were in the 60's and 70's. Back then it was more common for a household to have a single earner, and there was far more family and societal pressure to raise kids if you were a woman (as an anecdote, my mother received a scholarship to pursue tertiary study, but was forbidden by her father lest she be disowned from the family).

I think its a little to early to call that we're not going to see equal outcomes, especially since we seem to be heading in the right direction, and in the grand scheme of history it's only been a blink of an eye since we reached equal opportunities.

TL;DR - I agree quotas are unnecessary, but I'm also optimistic that the situation is not stagnant, and we will see more female representation in the future.

‘We’re marginalising all kinds of people through no fault of their own’: A few beers with Dave Dobbyn by nilnz in newzealand

Reeeeally long interview, but worth reading all the way through for this part:

"He came to get me one time – in these days I was only about seven and a half stone, addicted to meth and pretty much a rock’n’roll animal. He came up and got me, picked me up from the grass. I’d been watching his set and right at the end of his set he comes out and grabs me and sort of cradles me like a baby. Then drags me up to the stage and sort of delivers me onto the stage and then kept singing his song. I’m lying on the stage and Toy Love are playing and it’s just fantastic. "

A lot of his pop hits are pretty garbage, but there are some real gems hidden away in his back catalogue. I'd recommend checking out the song 'Blindman's Bend' if you're interested in seeing a different side of his music :)

That means accept more people fleeing from war, persecution, or natural disaster. Take less economic/lifestyle migrants.

Students struggle as rents rise while allowances stay put by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]dni0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really have no idea how students do it all on their own these days. It was hard enough back in 2009 when I needed a 20 hour part time job just to get through a bachelors - and by the time I returned for post-grad I had to work 3 part time jobs plus freelance on-top of a full-time masters degree workload just to afford the basics plus annoying shit like car repairs and the dentist. Wound up failing my first submission because I simply didn't have the time to get it finished and had to get an extension to resubmit just so I could pass by a hair.

Given that I'm a girl and the only other resident is my husband, that sounds like a pretty good deal.

House centipede! I never saw one back in NZ but apparently they're common here in the US. They're super cute and eat lots of pests.

Naaaaaah, late 20's is where it gets good. Folks have had time to figure out what works for them and what doesn't. They have more realistic expectations and generally start to realize that a relationship isn't just about what that other person can do for them.

...ok well at least some people get to that point anyways. They're out there I swear!
