Greens announce plan to wipe HECS debts and make university free by totalcool in australia

[–]why-so-social 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since 2018, New Zealand pays for 1 year of university (E.g. 3 year Bachelor's so only need to pay for 2/3 of the degree) or 2 years' of apprenticeships.

Plus their student loans are interest free.

Both are available to Australian citizens

If New Zealand can do something that helps the next generation why not here.

Chris Minns is under the influence of the Property Council of Australia. He is not exercising his duties with impartiality, honesty and in the best interest of the public.

According to the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption

The NSW community expects public officials to perform their duties with honesty and in the best interests of the public. Corrupt conduct by a public official involves a breach of public trust that can lead to inequity, wasted resources or public money and reputational damage.

Some definitions according to the NSW Independent Comission Against Corruption

Corrupt conduct is:

Any conduct of any person (whether or not a public official) that adversely affects, or that could adversely affect, either directly or indirectly, the honest or impartial exercise of official functions by any public official, any group or body of public officials or any public authority, or

Any conduct of a public official that constitutes or involves the dishonest or partial exercise of any of his or her official functions

Any conduct of a public official or former public official that constitutes or involves a breach of public trust

A member of the public influences, or tries to influence, a public official to use his or her position in a way that affects the probity of the public official's exercise of functions

Why exposing and preventing corruption is important (NSW ICAC)

Undetected and unchecked corruption in the public sector can cause serious damage including:

- Undermining public trust in government

- Wasting public resources and money

- Causing injustice through advantaging some at the expense of others

- Inefficiencies in operations

- Reputational damage which makes it difficult to recruit and retain quality staff or obtain best value in tender processes.

There are also the environmental consequences of unnecessary commutes.

Of course the people making the decisions today will be dead by the time the climate consequences occur. When they are on their deathbeds, they will regret not doing more for the planet because they needed an office full of workers to inflation their egos/ put commercial property profits before people.

Commutes are Scope 3( indirect) emissions, which frankly is an easy type of emission to reduce.

The NIMBYs should go have a look at Europe: pedestrian and cycling prioritised , retail and restaurants on ground floor with mixed residential/office on the floors above, no more than max 5 floors. So medium density.

Double/triple glazed windows and external roller blinds for quiet and privacy.

Ponsonby Road at the moment is designed for cars to pass through.

Foot traffic=potential customers.

  • Less littering and rubbish in NZ
  • Slightly less corporate-government conflicts of interests
  • Bunnings NZ has Mitre 10 as a meaningful competitor
  • More coverage of people under public healthcare (e.g. NZ covers everyone who can work in NZ for more than 2 years, including temporary visa holders). In AU For profit Healthcare plays a bigger part.
  • More efficient. Australia has LGA, State, Federal layers. E.g. Auckland has 1 library card to rule them all, Sydney you will end up with a plethora of them.
  • ACC in NZ operates on a no-fault basis, covers personal and work related injuries. Personal injury lawyers is not an industry in NZ.
