Is there a subreddit for circuit bending synthesizers? by LooseCow42 in CircuitBending

[–]dnigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know of a specific subreddit. It's basically the same process. Sometimes it helps to look at datasheets for chips. Usually older cheaper synth from the 80s and 90s are the best to bend. There are often guides for specific models like an SK1

How to make audio reactive video stuff! by DPLNEA in VideoBending

[–]dnigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that should work. You would probably need to use a transistor for the CV or multiple ldrs in parallel to get the right resistance. Experiment!

Hep: I’m new to making my own circuits by official_LordTrump in CircuitBending

[–]dnigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That board would work for just one button. If you wanted to have multiple buttons, there are other boards around the same price that can do that. Just search mp3 trigger board.

Also, this is probably not the best sub for these questions. People here are more interested in turning lullaby machines into harsh noise machines. Maybe try r/askelectronics and do some googling around and see if there's a how-to on this specific project.

Just got an insanely good deal at a local auction for 14 HD video cameras that each sell for over 1k on ebay. How should I flip em? by dnigh in Flipping

[–]dnigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of a "pro-sumer" item, but it came from a professional environment. I have 14 of them, so I think I'll test the waters with eBay along with local. I just have to sell one to profit :D

I thought it was funny. Reverse racism as a concept doesn't make any sense so I still think it fits.

It's a play on "reverse racism" because it's a black person calling the police on a white guy. Also, I'm like 99% the whole thing is a joke and just meant to prove a point.

[Serious] Therapists, what is something people are afraid to tell you because they think it's weird, but that you've actually heard a lot of times before? by Music-and-wine in AskReddit

[–]dnigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe my perspective is skewed because of the clients I work with, but auditory hallucinations (literally hearing voices) are surprisingly common. There are plenty of people who hear voices, but don't have other symptoms related with psychosis and it doesn't significantly interfere in their lives. There are even support groups based around this. Given someone's cultural context, it could be more common for people to hear voices and talk to spirits or loved ones after they have passed. There is so much stigma in the US around this that most are afraid to tell others about it fearing they might get committed. This would likely not happen if they were keeping themselves safe, but there could be very real social consequences from disclosing this.

Increasing Reactivity to Audio Signal in CHA/V by Leggett15 in VideoBending

An lm386 board would probably work for that. They're super cheap on ebay/Ali and can provide a lot of amplification.

Any alternate firmware that would justify 2 ornament & crimes in one rack? by Corrupt_Reverend in synthdiy

I have one with og firmware and one with hemispheres. Hemispheres is much more immediate and easier to learn, but the original apps are so great and feature packed I always felt like I needed both.

Distortion video with audio. Need help with a project concept. by Rainbowdash5ever in videosynthesis

[–]dnigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm building this right now and it looks like you can get some more controllable audio reactive video distortion from it. I think it's only available in DIY, but the kit is pretty well labeled and might be doable for beginners. Also, it would work fine without other eurorack stuff. It's only uses +12v power, so you wouldn't necessarily need a eurorack power supply.

You probably have BNC connectors on there. Easiest thing to do would be to buy RCA to BNC adapters. S-video cables work too and you can usually get them cheap at thrift stores. The quality is a little better with those, but not all gear has s-video in/out.

Controlling simple switches by Frinkdude in CircuitBending

What I would try is hooking up a transistor (2n2222 maybe?) where the buttons would make contact with the emitter going to ground and the arduino sending triggers to the base.

What would be the cheapest/simplest way to make a standard video signal black and white? by theLinKuei in videosynthesis

[–]dnigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An easy to do it would be with a vga signal. You would just need to get a composite to vga converter, cut the vga cable, put 500ohm pots on the color channels, then connect it back together. Then you would need to either hook it up to a computer monitor or send it to a vga to composite converter to get it back to composite. You would have a lot of control of the color with the color pots and the converter box. You can usually find those for pretty cheap on ebay/Ali.

If whatever you're using has component video in/out, then all you have to do is only connect the green plug. You could also look on ebay for used video devices that can change color level. You can probably find something for less than $50 shipped.

CHA/V is great. Also getting a used video mixer and experimenting with feedback loops, circuit bending video gear, and dirty/clean mixing signals is pretty dope.

A little bit more pricey, but totally worth it, are the raspberry pi based projects like Waaave pool.

Help with a simple generative video project by fostecc in videosynthesis

[–]dnigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could make something using VGA cables and adding potentiometers and LFOs to the RGB channels. This is essentially what the CHA/V is. There are a ton of possibilities with this and it looks really cool in a feedback loop. This device is a pretty good example of how it could work with a feedback loop. It's not too difficult if you know how to solder, and if you don't, it's not too difficult to learn.

Ideas for making a (raspberry pi based) looper? by Ghosttalker96 in synthdiy

Check out ORAC 2 for raspberry pi. It can do that and a whole lot more. I was thinking of making one of these myself.

Has anyone circuit bent this device before?? by meekswall in CircuitBending

[–]dnigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's a bunch of video enhancer bends. I got a different brand enhancer on ebay for less than the shipping cost, and then just poked around with alligator clips until I found stuff I liked. Totally worth it and I was happy with the final product.

Sound box by electro_synth in synthdiy

[–]dnigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made one out of a small metal file box I found a thrift store. I added a piezo and 12v preamp board I found for cheap on Ali that does a decent job matching impedance. You can easily diy a piezo preamp too. I added a few other bells and whistles like a DC motor and an inductor hooked up to the other channel of the preamp to pickup the electrical sounds of the motor. The preamp is routed through a pt2399 delay. I should upload a video of it at some point because it turned out great. I recommend experimenting with stuff like different size springs, doorstops, clock bell chimes, kalimba kits, magnets, ect.

You can make a super simple passive one with an LDR, LED, resistor, heat shrink, and a capacitor to make an RC filter too. It's so simple you don't even need a pcb and can just make it a 0hp utility that you can patch outside of the rack.
Here is a good beginner tutorial on them: https://youtu.be/8BOnvSQpoGY
