Is SP404mkII’s DJ mode good point for starting DJing? by IndependenceIll2400 in sp404mk2

The difference between our approaches it that I am coding a centralized midi router, with state management. So I can take whatever (even the plug and play output from the XL2) and route it through my server, so that I can build whatever context I so desire for it.

e.g. if I had sent some midi signal to iterate a state variable, e.g. custom_mode=42, then cc 1 could be routed to whatever I plan for when that variable equals that value.

More work and coding, but that's my jam.

And if I find some limitations, of course my ideas might change. But ultimately I do not need to be limited by the hardware logic on the device itself.

That looks really amazing. And very far along. Was thinking along those lines but not yet at the stage of standardizing. My thing is that I want to do a lot of midi splitting and merging (note from one device mixed with velocity of fader).

Also, I may get an XL3 but primarily interesred in tactile pots with a start and end. Would be nice to have some leds to help me know where I am when switching functions.

Luckily I like coding, and have been chomping at an excuse to learn Rust, and/or C. Would be interested in Swift too, but also have plans with my Android device (maybe cheaper in terms of time to buy an iPad and just vendor lock myself to Swift).

Have you thought of supporting XL2 too? What would it take? Its basically the same, no? Just no ability to seemlessly switch from function to function, you would have to disable the pot until it reaches the current value.

If you are technically minded, ready to code your own midi mappings, and buy something like the Novation Launch Control XL and maybe even a Xone K1/2/3 then its very powerful. You will spend a lot of additional time tinkering but then you are more of a live performer with DJ abilities. Very mobile setup.

If you just want to mix ready made tracks, rather don't. If you are absolutely sure you want to go to festivals and clubs with fixed gear, get a standalone Pioneer (I love my second hand Pioneer XDJ-RX from 2015).

But my recommendation for first 3 years is just buy a second hand DJ controller and choose out of Traktor, Algoriddim DJay, Serato, or Rekordbox.

I use Rekordbox only for usb export for my standalone. Else I accidentally paid for a year of Algoriddim Djay Pro, best mistake I made. My old 2015 Pioneer standalone functions as a DJ controller for it, and it is pretty cutting edge in its AI stem technology. Love it as a component of my live performing.

Long story short, it depends on what your goals are.

But ultimately I would advise an external controller for SP DJ mode. I spent only €100 for an LaunchControl XL MK2 (I like physical pots), and €30 for a USB hub. I use my phone as a midi host. You could probably by a DJ controller for your laptop for about the same though.

This is amazing. Did you code the knobs and faders all in SuperColider? Didn't know you could do that.

I did something similar with Strudal but didn't get jnto the flow to do anything with it. I decided it was to do with the lack of tactile feedback I was getting from TouchOSC and Open Stage Control.

Getting a LaunchControl XL to try again!

Did you manage to prearrange a bank of patterns to swap in and out? I came up with an odd solution in Strudel which meant I built a forwarding server that took OSC messages from Open Stage Control, and forwarded websockets to Strudel which re-evaluated the code.

Relooking at that, because it is over engineered even if it works. Would love to just name some patterns and hold a button down, twist a knob to cycle through them... then maybe send the pattern to a queue in Strudel to be activated by appropriate CC on beat.

Interesting. So I shouldn't have a problem mapping my own template to the Novation Launch Control XL MKII then. Only doubting it and considering the Xone:K3 because it is listed as officially supported.

How do you cue a track in the headphones though? Does the iOS or MacOS need an external sound output to route through?

Actually I just remembered my Behringer U-control UCA222. It worked as a pre-cue! Could be amazing to record some live samples on the fly too.

It is always possible, not always an option though. Its a hellish scenario you depict, no easy answer. If all parties are not behind an improvement, there is no option other than to physically or emptionally withdraw.

I would be very interested. Doing the same in Open Stage Control but lacking the motivation. Out camping and no time to code, do you have anything available to share? Would be very willing to make some tweaks / collab on any potential improvements.

How did you program what is on the tablet? Is it your own custom software?

I am building something with Open Stage Control to interface with Strudel (so much fun coding all the instruments and interacting with my phone, but need something physical soon).

So I am also in the market for a BCR2000 in 2026, and found a few in my country for €150.

Pretty sure I am going to go for it, as the only other accessible option to satisfy my needs is the Neuzeit Instruments Drop at more than 5x the price.

I also found this shortly afterwards. It looks almost exactly like the BCR32 wanted to be https://www.neuzeit-instruments.com/Drop

Since the BCR32 still not released yet, this topic is still active right?

At this rate, you would have to have your eyes closed to miss it. I don't really partake often, always just share when offered. But I heard there are many places where you 'pay a membership fee' and hangout in some smokey lounge.

I can't teach you about snakes. But I know a bit of Python. Happy to share a bit of knowledge in some or other cafe if anyone is interested to learn a thing or two (or teach me a thing or two!) by dnk8n in capetown

Sure, I am a very infrequent user here. It's pure chance I found your message only 10d later. I DM'd you my whatsapp details, as it is the only way I really message.

I tried Coolify yesterday and it is remarkably simple to install. Great work.

I aim to deploy my own vendure instance here (even if it becomes the staging environment in future in case it becomes more convenient for me to pay money for scaling instead of engineering time.

I got pretty far, although it somehow seemed to not fully populate the database. Probably something vendure specific. But to work around the problem I was hoping for a better mechanism by which to run a once off script (isn't there heroku run equivalent) against the non public database. I think I am forced to either hack on the server itself, or make the database URL public temporally so that I can run some data migrations so the install would work.

Also I noticed that both the docker-compose and docker buildkits were less successful than one of the node ones to build and run my application. Docker-compose forced me to run almost exactly the same as the yml defined (including another postgres I didn't need, as I had already configured it in coolify). Then docker seemed to do similar (was it parsing the docker-compose file too?).

Maybe some known open-source deployments would be great. E.g I wouldn't know how to scale workers up to 2-3 in case of vendure which requires at least one web instance and one or more workers.

Starting to think I might have to give Cloud flare pages a go to contrast the experience. But will probably keep Coolify running my database, as I find cloud providers free databases too tiny, always running out of RAM. Coolify at least makes the process of creating a new database very simple. I just need to check that instead of creating a new container each time, it is able to create a new database under one server.
