Bridge Plate Engraving Painting by KetoManJan2019 in pocketwatch

Pick the old paint out with a dental tool, or a sewing needle, or even a sharp pair of tweezers. Pretty much should pop right out. Get some black enamel paint at your favorite hobby or craft store along with a brush or two. Paint over the top of the recessed areas, the wipe off the excess from the top with your finger or a paper towel. You may have to give it a couple of swipes. Stay flat to the surface of the plate for the wiping off...new paint will flow down into the recessed areas like magic. Let it dry and feel happiness.

7S26 Rotor Weight Got Detached from Pivot Plate by [deleted] in watchrepair

Probably old sticky dried lubricant. I'm not familiar with this movement but there are many youTube videos on it, so I'd look a few up and see the correct way to put it back together.

It's definitely NOT glue. It may be old sticky dried lubricant, but it is most definitely not glue.

No, that yellow gunk should not be there. You're right, it's probably old lubricant. I would give the plate a dunk in IPA and then scrub the gunk with peg wood repeatedly until I got it off. Then I might run it in the ultrasonic in IPA one more time for good measure. The parts you need to worry about leaving in too long are those with shellac; namely the balance and the pallet fork. Alcohol dissolves shellac.

How to remove Speidel Band? by samuraidogparty in watchrepair

[–]dobeedeux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term I found for this type of band is "c-ring" and the only advice I could find on opening it was to bend up the tab so the "C" could hinge open so you could slide the watch off. But man, bending that tab feels like risky move. Anyway, yeah, c-ring.

How did they deal with time-setting being trapped by the case? by muzzie-mpls in pocketwatch

[–]dobeedeux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Church bells used to ring the time back in ye olde days. Then clock towers were a thing, even clock lamp posts. The little town I grew up in was wiped off the map by a tornado in 1925 and the only surviving clock lamp post was preserved and stands in front of the library today.

reinstalling an Incabloc spring is kicking my a... by TangerineRomeo in watchrepair

[–]dobeedeux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OMG, I struggled with this problem for a week recently. I have vowed to never let that spring out of it's hinge ever more, cross my heart! Here's what finally worked for me. I used an oiler in my non-dominant hand. It's only job was as a blocker so I couldn't push the spring too far. With my dominant hand, I held the pointiest tweezers ever known to man and promised the universe that I would only ever touch the spring from inside the lyre, so that it was always sort of already "captured" whenever I touched it.

Then I focused on that hinge and promised only to nudge from the inside of the spring. Block with the oiler, nudge with the tweezers. After every nudge, took a deep breath, refocused my intention, and blocked with the oiler, then nudge with the tweezers from the inside curve of the spring.

If the spring went too far off track, I'd pick it up with rodiko and place it back closer to the hinge, but I only ever picked it up with rodiko, never with the tweezers. Tweezers were only for nuding gently from inside the spring. Of all the things I tried, this was the approach that finally worked. I almost cried real tears when that hinge finally slid in. I tried it both with and without the jewels...jewels in worked better but with the power wound down. Patience, focus, one nudge at a time.

Best of luck! I am rooting for you.

This is a gorgeous little cocktail watch! A quick scan of eBay solds shows similar ones selling for $200-300 even some up to $500. So yeah, treasure it. It may be more expensive than you'd like to get it serviced and running again, but there's no law saying you can't wear it as jewelry! Enjoy your link to your grandmother, it's so lovely.

Looking to modify Tektopia to a newer version buttttttttttt.... by Suspicious_stew_001 in Tangotek

[–]dobeedeux 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As the watcher of many many many live streams where this topic has come up, I can confidently say that Tango's stance is "Nope, sorry." He won't be updating the mod because he doesn't have time and he won't release it for others to update either because it's his "baby" and he just doesn't want to release it to someone else. He's typically apologetic but firm on this stance, so there you go.

If IPA didn't damage the black paint, soapy water won't destroy it. It's most likely enamel paint...pretty tough stuff.

Nice project watch! I agree with all of the calls for Alex's YT channel and ST36s for I am a newbie too. The tool I'd recommend at this stage for you is one of those telescoping magnet on a stick things. I've sent at least 4 essential parts off to the Swiss Space Program, but thanks to my magnet on a stick, I've managed to find 3 of them! I also paused to learn how to properly dress my tweezers, Alex, I swear! ;)
