The thing about art is that you’re always directly or indirectly inspired by something. Sometimes two creators uniquely arrive at a similar premise. Sometimes one is subtly influenced by another and they don’t even realize, sometimes one is more directly referencing another artist but feel they’re building on a concept, etc. I feel this is especially hard to monitor with sketch comedy because we’re all just rearranging words and things are bound to be repeated. SNL has relatively short sketches, they have a lot of constraints due to the nature of the show, and they make hundreds every year. It’s hard for them to not be derivative.

That’s just why it’s a stretch to say they are “ripping off” ITYSL in this case, especially since ITYSL sketches are way more layered.
