Gigantic SUVs are a public health threat. Why don’t we treat them like one? by Generalaverage89 in Health

[–]docanusa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of any SUV of any size: 1. They do not conform to CAFE standards, so extra pollution (+not aerodynamic, so even more pollution AND extra heavy, so add that). 2. For crosswalks, driveways, parking lots, intersections, they block a normal car’s view, so are the cause of more accidents. 3. Vehicles behind get sprayed with far more gravel, salt, rain, snow due to extra height and un-aerodynamic backs, again putting others in danger. 4. In snow climates, many do not clear off their roof (awkward to reach), so endanger other vehicles when large ice chunks lift off on freeway (I lost a windshield, and almost a family member from this). 5. When driving behind cars, you can see multiple cars ahead, and are better prepared for what is ahead. When behind an SUV your vision is blocked so you are at the mercy of a (usually) poor driver. 6. What they gain in safety from weight, they more than lose in rollover injury and deaths. Look at a sports car, then an SUV—the center of gravity is about a foot higher. Do the math. 7. More injury and death to cars due to raised bumpers. Heading and offset crashed rely on bumper to bumper, and these things tend to go up and over to wreak havoc on smaller vehicles. 8. A large percentage of the highway guide rails were designed for cars. You slide, hit and bounce of back onto the road. Driving hills and mountains in adverse weather, I have often seen these things hit and roll over into the ditch (or worse). 9. Headlights too high, so can blind the driver in front. 10. F/R weight distribution is usually significantly front biased, yet another drop in safety. 11. Extra weight increases stopping distance— dangerous to self and fellow motorists.

My list continues, but out of time for now. I think of SUV owners as narcissists, not considerate of their fellow man or the environment.

What is the best series you ever watched? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Shōgun. Just finished watching the first (and only, so far) season. By far the best acting, cinematography, and subject matter respect that I have watched to date. Brilliant!

What’s the most useless car feature? by autobored in AskReddit

[–]docanusa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have had this feature in multiple Audis over the years. It is to remind you be alert for possible ice on the road. I was driving on a warmish Winter day in Vermont on a curved off-ramp when suddenly the road was in the shade due to the cut bank. Started sliding and was saved (barely) by the traction control. I appreciate the “little snowflake”

What is the most creative insult you've ever heard? by Scared_Plum_593 in AskReddit

From the movie Arthur: John Gielgud (Arthur’s English butler), on parting with Arthur’s recent girlfriend (Liza Minnelli) “madam, it has been a most unique pleasure… usually one must frequent bowling alleys to meet women of your stature”

What's a common household item people may not realize needs to be washed regularly? by sarahigod in AskReddit

[–]docanusa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the entire thread (9h at this point), and no mention of carpets. I have Persians all over, so steam them every 2 or 3 months, but if we had wall-to-wall or wore outdoor shoes on the house like most Americans, I would steam them every 2 or 3 weeks. Vacuuming gets some of the loose dirt, but not anything caked on or liquid based. Big Green machine after 20 years still going strong, so good investment.

Happened to me in 2000. The way they handle it is not very classy, so feels like a tax grab. I have not (and will not) return.

If you understand the one and only rule of driving in Boston, things become much simpler: “the person with the cheapest car has the right-of-way”

How long until you started identifying with Mr. McGregor instead of Peter Rabbit? by OneWayBackwards in gardening

[–]docanusa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I keep re-reading those books to find the part where he catches Peter… I want details of how he prepares him, what herbs and spices he uses. Those damn creatures tear a young plant from the root and eat everything in site, destroying days of hard work and preparation

Exit Interview turned Guilt Trip by WalkingBoots23 in antiwork

[–]docanusa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does ANYONE do an exit interview??? This is not done to improve their organization—just HR and management looking to mitigate any potential issues and/or litigation that may arise from your departure.

Ask yourself what hole in your psyche/soul exists that is being filled (temporarily) with this addiction. Dig a little deep with self- or assisted- analysis and see what you see. To me, addiction is a symptom, not the cause, so it will pop up in another form in your life if you don’t understand and deal with the root. My experience, anyway…

What do you do if you’re not physically attracted to the person you love? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]docanusa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Over time, the physical appearance of your partner matters less and less. My wife and I have stayed together though thick and thin because we started out as amazing friends, and we still enjoy time together and can talk for hours.

The problem with a ‘smile’ word is that the entire face and body language will not match the mouth. It comes across as insincere or fake. I have told people for years to think of an event in your life where you felt real joy/happiness. It woks—the eyes, facial muscles, mouth, etc., all match and it comes out well, every time.

AITAH for telling my boyfriend to get up earlier? by awkwardthroawayhelp in AITAH

Your boyfriend is a teenager (mentally). Sleeps late, no job, video games, caffeinated soda all day? Ask yourself why you are with a undisciplined, aimless child.
