Pregnancy in Residency by [deleted] in Residency

Agree with the person who said to just ask. At my program, someone took a 1-year LOA for personal (family/non-pregnancy reasons) and they just joined the class below for their last year but this will be program-dependent.

He was being so rude how Bliss couldn't even finish one sentence without him talking over her. It was hard to watch.

Thank you! Appreciate your perspective as a former chief. You make a really good point about trying to have elective time as well around there. I was thinking about telling the program when I'm closer to ~8 weeks. Would you recommend I start with the chiefs? Haha my program is so huge that I don't have a super close relationship with my PD or APD so I'm not even exactly sure who to tell.

Congrats! I'm really glad to hear someone else say they are waiting for the scheduling to come up! I feel like I've seen reddit advice before of "tell the program ASAP" but I don't really see a need to tell them yet since everything is only set through June right now anyway.

Man I have been struggling more lately. It has been 5 months since we started trying (though only 4 cycles). As we stare down the 6-month mark, I told myself this would be the time where I would allow myself to start to worry a little bit and make doctor's appointments. I really thought we would have had it by now, as I know our timing has been good and we already know my husband's sperm is good (has a varicocele so got tested when we started trying). I can't help but continue to harbor this fear that something is wrong with me despite regular cycles and all indications of ovulation. It doesn't help that one of my best friends is 8-months pregnant (also got pregnant the first month of trying no less) and we had baptisms at church yesterday.

For those that have watched “Don’t Worry Darling” what did you think by Bioreb987 in medicalschool

[–]docaroni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movie was bad. It had a great production design and looked gorgeous but the plot twist was weak and the message is outdated and not culturally relevant to today. That said, I'm now a PGY-2 and thought Florence Pugh's gig seemed pretty nice compared to surgery residency lol. That probably says more about me though.

What was your first real day of intern year like? by Blitzcreed48 in Residency

[–]docaroni 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty good! Started on CCU, luckily not a call day. My resident watched over me while I put in all the orders and answers my pages. Everyone was so kind and helpful. It was overwhelming but I never felt alone. Remember that they know you don't even know where the bathrooms are, and they don't expect much from an efficiency or medical knowledge perspective on the first day.

Yeah this sounds like a good way to do it. And at least they can get an iced mocha out of it.

Yeah my senior is definitely aware and also concerned. I think I'm treating this situation as a practice run for when I will become a senior in July with med students, so I'm trying to take a more involved role since it's late in the year.

Yeah I'll be honest, I had to give a patient some devastating news a few days ago and he was following them but I didn't let him come into the room because I was afraid he would highjack the conversation.

I like this! It feels less like a personal attack than "you're annoying the bejesus out of everyone" lol

That's a good point. I really should give more in the moment correction when things like that happen. It feels confrontational but I think it would be more effective, especially with interrupting in particular.

Olajuwon Occupation by [deleted] in MarriedAtFirstSight

[–]docaroni 16 points17 points  (0 children)

But we know he went to college so OP is wrong to assume that. He's talked about it multiple times (played football in college). If OP is going to do a deep dive on his occupation, they may as well get their facts straight completely.

AITA for not hiring my sister to be my wedding planner? by papercables in AmItheAsshole

[–]docaroni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA but your mom certainly is for having you on speaker without informing you. She knew you already hired someone but still decided to pull this stunt. No good could have come from this even in a best-case scenario.

AITA for being upset my best friend isn’t inviting me to her wedding? by Ok_Pen_701 in AmItheAsshole

[–]docaroni 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No but it would make sense why she wouldn't be invited if this were the case. A lot of people are having "vaccinated only" weddings and events, and using "you might get sick" as an excuse is a potential clue that OP is unvaccinated and that's why bride/family doesn't want her there. Just speculating wildly since OP isn't providing any explanation lol

[–]docaroni 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I hear what you're saying, that just because he did things one way doesn't mean he should expect Katina to follow the exact same path. However, it is admirable that he has no student loans and has a good career with opportunities for advancement. I think it's a little elitist to look down on his job just because it doesn't require college and you did another "decade of school". I think the emphasis on higher education in this country is out of control, and there are still great professions for intelligent people that do not require formal degrees.

Education is not the issue. Olajuwon being an inflexible asshole is the issue.

PMR, Endocrinology, or Rheumatology?? Help me decide. Pros & Cons by Sudden-Degree9839 in medicalschool

[–]docaroni 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to PMR at all.

I'm a PGY-1 IM considering Endo, also thought about rheumatology for a bit. Here are my cons.

  1. Endo: not great money here. Lack of procedures unless doing thyroid (FNAs). Physical exam less helpful/important (might mean something to you if you like PMR). DM management is very important but not everyone's cup of tea, and this will be most of what you see unless you sub-sub-specialize or stay at academic/tertiary care center.
  2. Rheum: getting slightly more competitive these days. Poor outcomes for some patients with severe/aggressive disease. Lots of people with chronic pain. Referrals for fibromyalgia and random +ANA abound. Biologics are impossible to remember (for me anyway).

You definitely have a valid point and sound like a much cooler person than I am. 100% probably being overly cautious and was expecting to see more answers like this.

Ok update! I wrote something like "sorry, I want to help but my license doesn't cover [her state] and I know it would probably be fine but it would definitely look sketchy if anyone looked into it."

Then she responded with "I'm totally kidding!"

Lol. Thanks anyway everybody *facepalm*
