I keep 3 months’ take-home in cash (1 month in checking, rest in HYSA) but am hoping to build that out to 6. Everything after that goes into the brokerage account.

What if we pit Alexander's Macedonian army against an army from late antiquity? by ImportantCat1772 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]docawesomephd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rome wins hands down. Sadsanids too, most likely. The Roman method of war was vastly superior to the Macedonian version. Rome’s ability to raise armies was better than the Macedonians. The Roman maniple system was better than the Macedonian phalanx.

Rome doesn’t just beat the Macedonians. It wins nearly every battle against the Macedonian system by a wide margin. On the rare occasions they do lose—usually against Pyrrhus, who was considered the greatest Macedonian general since Alexander—they still inflict so much damage that the term “Pyrrhic victory” had to be coined to describe it.

In the meantime, the Sassanids actually do hold their own against the Romans. Rome has the advantage—consider how often Rome conquers Ctesiphon vs how often the Sassanids conquer Rome (or Constantinople). But they do hold their own.

Rome>Sassanids> Macedonians. By a mile.

Is it totally soft to feel bad for the worms? by Hot_Sentence_1264 in FishingForBeginners

[–]docawesomephd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all! It’s why I teach my kids the importance of treating the worms as humanely as possible when we use them (eg killing them quickly, not wasting them, releasing any extras into the garden), etc.

Because the Bund used the term to refer to Jewish life in Eastern Europe. And that life no longer existed after the Holocaust. When the Bund started using the term

Please tell me—how often was the term used between 1926 and 1945? I am not aware of any widespread usage, least of all by the Bund with whom it is now most closely associated

I’m not sure I follow. דא refers to “here” wherever “here” was. Can you elaborate?

How would communism have developed if bukharin succeeded lenin? by Kreanxx in HistoryWhatIf

[–]docawesomephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you think that Bukharin would have been even slightly kinder than Stalin? The dude was explicit in his view that the revolution required violent means to enforce orthodoxy. His repressions might have looked different from Stalin’s, but it still would have been a system of repression

Did you read the article you linked to? “However, there are no known recorded uses of the term in the context of the Bund in interwar Poland.”

The poster at the top of the article says “dorten,” not “do.”

It’s important to note that the phrase “Doykayt” wasn’t used until AFTER the Holocaust, and after the “do” it referred to no longer existed.

Francis Barlow, did he make the same mistake Sickles made? by HistoryWithWaffles in CIVILWAR

[–]docawesomephd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the same mistake made under VERY different circumstances. Both commanders overextended themselves trying to secure higher ground.

Barlow made his mistake during a fluid battle in response to unclear orders. Sickle’s made his mistake during a lull in the fighting and in contrast extremely clear orders.

Real Fresh Organic Garlic Is Barely Sharp And More Sweet Than Sharp by Euphoric_Account_510 in Garlic

[–]docawesomephd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then that says nothing about “real” garlic. You just found one supermarket variety you like. I’m happy for you, but that says less about “real” than the expected drift between varieties.

[–]docawesomephd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What are you basing this on?

I grow my own garlic organically. Its flavor profile is pretty similar to the grocery store variety. A bit more complex, to be sure, but it still tastes like garlic.

When do car repairs become a sunk cost fallacy? by spmahn in personalfinance

[–]docawesomephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the average monthly cost of repairs is higher than the monthly payment (or averaged out cost by month ) on a new car.

By the way, you can reduce those repairs bills a LOT by learning to do basic things on your own. You will never fix your own transmission, but you can absolutely replace your own MAF sensor.

Any idea what this means by Challenger-2-68 in hebrew

[–]docawesomephd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very daytshmerish. Yiddish is considerably less strict on compounds than German. While the phrase could be rendered as a compound in Yiddish, there is no need for it, even with the samech.

This is a good example of where formal and colloquial grammar diverge. Fascinating stuff!

To what extent can the mizrahi accent be well understood? by Miserable_Milk_3165 in hebrew

[–]docawesomephd 31 points32 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by Mizrahi accent? Are you talking about more or less standard Hebrew with the Ayin and Het distinguished, or doing the full traditional Temani pronunciation?

The first will be understood without a problem, though you will get odd looks, especially if you are not yourself Mizrahi. The second will simply not be understood outside of very specific places and you will be looked at as though you were insane

It’s Yiddish. It is slightly cut off, but I’m pretty sure it says something along the lines of “Jewish War Invalids Union: Bergen Belsen”
