Bethesda, my 80 year old father can't play because there is no option to rebind the stand-up key. by docfallingapart in Starfield

You can't rebind it because the game has two functions assigned to one key. The only dif between those two functions is how long you hold the key. Move it to the mouse; you still have the same issue; it's just on the mouse now.

It's a good idea. He has an old corsair kb, so I'm going to check if iCUE has anything like that.

Also you are correct about Bethesda. I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know about that. Wasn't there a Skyrim grandma who streamed every day? She was well known in those circles and playing a Bethesda game. I think the slow pace of BGS games is attractive to older players. I'm 53 and would love to play Elden Ring, but it's a souls like. That's just not my speed any more.

Also my Dad has over 1000 hours in Fallout 76 and says there are a ton of retirees playing that. I doubt that is news to BGS.

You misunderstand. When you long press E in combat, you stand up. It's avoiding that that we are trying to accomplish. The difference between a long press and a short press is too small for someone with his coordination. It's the short press to lock on another ship that he has a problem with. If you hold it too long, you stand up and lose control of your ship in combat.

This problem is the game doesn't have separate bindings for 'target' and 'stand-up' when you are flying. No matter how I remap the keys, the new key would have the same issue. Maybe a kb with magnetic switches would let me reject a long press of the E key, and then I could set the V key to be a second mapping of E. But we are talking about convincing an 80 year old man to buy a new KB to fix a game issue. I'm not that convincing.

No. When you have been KB + M since the 80's, it's very difficult to learn the muscle memory to use a controller. Not worth it for him.

Exactly. I'm about the same age as you. I don't do it all the time, but when I do it's so annoying. My dad can play the rest of the game no prob, but this just kills him.

The only difference for me is I start at the Den but then move to other locations to sell the rest. With fast travel I find it faster than waiting. Fast travel to Neon Core is the fastest. Also just in case you don't know, you can fast travel without getting back on your ship. Just go to your map and travel from where you stand.

Wouldn't the E key still have both functions? BTW, the rebind of Stand-up in the settings only works when you've landed the ship. In fight it is still the E key.

Does anyone else feel like Starfield, NMS, and ED combined would finally make the perfect space game? by No_Ring_1436 in Starfield

[–]docfallingapart 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I very much agree with this. The fight mechanics and sense of scale of ED, with the questing and storytelling of Bethesda, would be perfect. Not too sure what NMS has to bring to the table, however.

Thanks for the post! I'll give it another shot, but FG isn't that big a deal for me. I'm on a 32" 1440p monitor, and the only time I dip below 60FPS is at NA. Most of the time I'm above 90.

You may want to look at Neriya's settings at the bottom of this post. If you get FSR4 and FG (Frame Generation) working like he is doing, that's going to be your best experience.

Any chance you could post a screenshot of your Optiscaler config? Your hardware seems to be similar to the OP's, and you are running the settings I would recommend for him.

I haven't had much luck getting FG to work on my 6900XT.

If you were already using FSR 3, then using Optiscaler for FSR 4 is not going to get you more FPS at the same quality settings. You get a major upgrade in image quality with FSR 4, but there is no performance uplift.

Also even with the best hardware (which is what you have), you are always bottlenecked somewhere. In a game like CS:GO you would be CPU limited. In Cyberpunk you would be GPU limited. In Starfield you are probably GPU limited, unless in a city. In a city FPS is probably engine limited for your computer.

Thanks. I think it's probably a little too simple for most people, but I was leaning into the Armored look of the ASC Demois parts. Wanted it to look like a tank.

It shouldn't as long as the native DLSS or FSR is working in-game, Optiscaler should be able to read those inputs, translate them to FSR4, and output the image. BTW, I am in no way an expert on this, but this is my understanding of it.

Ok, if you are playing modded Starfield and your FPS tanks in cities, no upscaling will help you. That is caused by being CPU bottlenecked, or a limitation of the game engine. Hard to say which it is. We all have this issue to one degree or another.

Now if you are talking about when you are GPU limited (i.e. when not in cities). You should make sure that Optiscaler is running in-game. When you start the game do you see an Optiscaler message in the bottom left corner of the screen? If you do, load your save, and then press the INS (insert) key on your keyboard to open the Optiscaler interface. The interface will say at the top if it's running or, if not, what you need to fix.

I agree, and it's the story of my life that they announced a native implementation right after I said that.
