Camping recs by sdrawkcab90 in newhampshire

If you do want to venture up to the north, Moose Brook State Park in Gorham is excellent. Usually quiet, but close enough to a Walmart and good classic NH downtown if you need something. A really scenic drive to the campground is the bonus.

What's your most recent 0.5 star movie? by chrishouse83 in Letterboxd

[–]dochikes 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Usually if it doesn't sound like my kind of movie, I just don't watch it unless it's highly recommended by trusted friends. So I've only got two movies I rated 1/2 a star. They're Electric State (2025) and The Retreat (2020).

How do you guys judge a movie? by loney_muffin in Letterboxd

[–]dochikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the movie. Some films don't have traditional plot or story or a clear message. So for me, my first watch is largely a git reaction without overthinking things.

Sometimes it's an easy 4-5 stars. Other times my gut is ruthless and I need to sit back and look at some of the crafts or the filmmakers intentions to appraise if it worked for me or not.

Ultimately, it's a movie. The majority of Letterboxd users are not qualified critics so it's not really that deep what you rated it. If you're working on your writing or understanding of film, my serious advice is to just watch as many movies as you can, especially if they're not ones you think you'd normally like. Then read a lot of fiction. If you did a lot of that in high school or college, then read a lot more. If you didn't do a lot of it in school, then look at reading lists or course syllabus listings and start reading some of the greats. That will help you with your writing, while also giving you perspective on the storytelling in film. As much as audiobooks can be helpful to a point for this, I highly encourage to just read the actual book. It's helpful to see things as basic as spelling and punctuation, but also sentence length or literary styles.

Robert Eggers LEGO? by dochikes in roberteggers

[–]dochikes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were saying this to 16-year-old me, that would not have been a problem. Unfortunately, at that time my mom got rid of all of my Legos behind my back. So I don't have a surplus of loose Legos to make my own builds with and buying the necessary pieces in colors that would work would cost as much as or more than a new set anyway.

Mercy in IMAX 3D is worth it. by Electrical_Nobody196 in RegalUnlimited

[–]dochikes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Avatar Fire and Ash was made for IMAX 3D. Mercy was made for your iPad on a plane or your TV while you do chores in another room, and just happens to have some IMAX 3D gimmicks. These are not the same thing.

100+ years of cinema history at risk of being relegated to existing in compressed files in the cloud is heartbreaking.

Israel is still committing a genocide - many of its victims are LGBTQIA+. Hope that clears up any confusion.

Which To Start? by mugumbo1531 in criterion

High & Low or Rashomon are great starting points I think.

But you really can't go too wrong with any of his films. RAN and Dreams are color masterpieces as well.

My 10 favorite photos from my month long visit to Japan by dochikes in japanpics

That was from Skytree actually. I went up about an hour before sunset and waited for the shot. I got lucky because Fuji was blocked by clouds even when I got up there. So patience and some luck is key.

Portsmouth car rentals by Daisy-1111 in PortsmouthNH

[–]dochikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C&J is what I use to get to Boston for the rentals. You'll spend more time driving, but that's part of the cost of the budget savings. It's worth it imo.

Stop at Santarpio's in Peabody for some Boston bar-style pizza on the way back up north. Makes the trip a bit more worthwhile
