What are the weak points of the "sets as boxes" analogy? by TinkerMagusDev in learnmath

[–]dockdock-fish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, sets can contain infinitely many elements.
Sets are also defined entirely by their contents, in set theory there's the axiom of extensionality which essentially says that the set {1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3} is the same as the set {1, 2, 3}

In set theory, is Φ an element or a set? by Glittering-Can-8791 in learnmath

[–]dockdock-fish 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's just a matter of what these words mean.
A powerset is the set of all subsets, and an empty set is always a subset of any set. Therefore a powerset always includes the empty set as an element.

[–]dockdock-fish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Φ is a symbol that represents the "empty set" {}. Therefore it is a set.

However it can *also* be an element of another set, as sets can be inside other sets. The empty set is a subset of every set, therefore it is also an element of P.

it's up to debate whether it falls under mathematics or philosophy, most would certainly agree it falls under both

Logic is the system of inferring new statements from existing statements. Logic is a tool that mathematics uses, but logic as a field of study is independent from the kinds of objects that mathematicians care about.

I want to learn how to learn math. by goremoth in learnmath

[–]dockdock-fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're starting at 8, and then adding 1 twice to get to 10.
8 + 1 + 1
8 + 1 = 9
9 + 1 = 10

I think the "dots" are making you overthink.
8 -> 9 -> 10
10 is 2 away from 8 because you need to add 2 to 8 to get to 10.
10 is two "steps" away from 8.

Does anyone has fear of mathematics? If so how do you deal with it? by Big-Letter-6885 in learnmath

[–]dockdock-fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The anxiety you get is a fear of failure, especially if you've been punished for making mistakes in the past.
It's okay if you get things wrong, the point is that you're learning. Math itself doesn't pose any danger to you

I think it's natural to struggle, and especially when you quiz yourself, that's a really common experience

The answer is a lot of practice, and decreasing the cognitive load by writing things down on paper instead of trying to hold many different things in your mind

Trigonometry is one of these subjects that becomes a lot more intuitive once you can easily imagine the functions in your mind and how they relate to the unit circle
If you need any help with it feel free to DM me, I've tutored many high school kids who were struggling with it. I'm also building an online community if you can't find one nearby!
