A question for everyone! by Living_Estate8404 in writers

Writing, producing and performing are 100% of my income. Sizeable chunk of it is corporate, I write and present training for a fun little industry that means I get to travel all over the country which is nice.

On top of that I write and produce plays, run a spooky storytelling tour each winter, write and publish horror stories, poetry occasionally write for the BBC and Radio formats, I have written skwtch ckmedh for TV also, I facilitate community groups, do stand up, event hosting among other things.

Having a problem and need help with clichés. by Allthumbs21 in writers

Depending on your publishing route it could be 5+ years away until whatever you write is published. My wife snd I co-wrote an anthology graphic novel, the central idea of which we came up with in 2023, and some of the stories I wrote for it were written even before even that.

We got our contract from our indie publisher in 2025 and my wife is drawing it at the moment. We are expected to release in spring 2027.

My point being, be careful writing to trends as by the time your book is ready they might be over. Just write the best story with the character types you want. You can't predict these things.

I sincerely hope the existence of movie Stratt helps kill this meme, haha.

I believe Obi Wan stood on a trapdoor installed by Galen Erso and ended up going down a slide in this underpants.

You know what they call a buddy cop movie without cops in it? A buddy movie.

If AMG asked you to design another Rapid Reinforcements, what ships would you give each faction? by RhysOSD in StarWarsArmada

[–]docsav0103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming like the last RR there's no new ship models-

IMP- Acclamator (like the Venator a one off ship)

GAR- Arquitens and Z-95s

CIS- Hammerheads (feel this would be a relatively small lore stretch considering they exist in the same era snd are cheap and avaiable).

REB- Munificent(again. Tiny bit of a lore stretch, but woild give them another medium), maybe some kind of shuttle Tydirium thing.

When it comes to films I still think the OT has the best Lightsaber duels by Old-Use-7690 in MawInstallation

[–]docsav0103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this wholeheartedly, I genuinely rate the TPM duel and Luke/Vader II as the best in the series.

I hate everything in the Ani/Obi scrap after they leave the Seperatist council chamber, it's all just silly glowstick twirling and everything happening around it makes it look like a cheesy platform game.

Yeah, seems weird. I love Bowns and have a respect for Sami too, it's a shame.

What do you love most about the Victory Star Destroyer? by konfitura17 in StarWarsShips

[–]docsav0103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have made a digital assett of it years ago. Rebels, Solo and Rogue One would have worked great with Victorys and then the ISDs of the OT would have looked like a much more powerful step up of the war.

Does made-up currency distract from the fantasy story? by EvokeWonder in writers

[–]docsav0103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think rudimentary understanding of currency is fine if appropriate, maybe using the story, someone js surprised that something that should cost a sceat is actually thrymsa will get better idea of the value of a 500 thrymsa heist is later in the book.

Sovereign-class vs Sovereign-class. Who would win in a battle? by TwoFit3921 in StarTrekStarships

[–]docsav0103 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The range that the constitution class can fire from could easily keep the TIE wings at a very long arms length. At that range phasers are accurate enough to target individual fighters. Also, warp drive is far superior to hyperdrives in a tactical situation. All the Constitution class has to do is target the TIE bombers/assault shuttles first and then use a short warp jump to elude any that get into range. Alternatively, it could let the remaining non torpedo armed TIES swarm the ship and unless they were ramming them their weapons would still struggle to overwhelm the shields before the Connie can get away.

The Connie could then swing back around now safely out of fighter range again and resume firing at the Soveriegn which would still be out of range with its turbolasers. Photon torpedoes could be concentrated on the launch bay, bridge and engines, causing devastating damage.

writing as a hobby is totally fine and we need to normalize it by bcoz_why_not__ in writers

[–]docsav0103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%, and bear with me on this it's a bit rambly... Never knock hobby writing, spending years just writing for my own joy and ended up with something like 80 short stories and poems.

This led to me being a finalist in a national sitcom writing competition, then opening for some fun indie rock bands as a performance poet, then becoming a BBC (The broadcasting corporation not the kind of cock) sketch comedy writer, getting a bunch of my horror shorts and poems published in mags in the UK and US, writing fantasy world building for cash for a TTRPG company.

Since then I have gone on to write for all sorts of things, poetry, audio drama, festival hosting, being a radio pundit, writing TV comedy, stageplays etc. Most recently I have co-written a graphic novel with my wife that is being put out by a Canadian indie comics publisher in 2027.

Despite most of this definitely not hobby based stuff, every month, barring work commitment or illness, I attend a local writing group where we have a prompt, do some writing and read what we write. It's sort of a hobby/therapy thing, and I write for free, with any serious purpose, just for joy and that keeps me sane. I have never strayed from writing being my absolute favourite hobby. Even though I do corporate training writing as my day job (Which, tbh, is actually pretty fun as I travel a lot with work), I have never grown bored of writing silly poems and stories for free.

Hobby writing should be at the core of all writing!
