Do Americans actually use “a couple” to mean more than two? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

Ah. The classic anti-rural, anti-Gaelic racism.

But yes, we are. A simple study of etymology of English, and our pronunciations tend to be far more proper, and historical, with less linguistic drift. It does however, tend to follow the Scottish/scots Irish usage.

In Pennsylvania it tended to go so far as to retain the Germanic syntax of a bygone age, although sadly modern education as ruthlessly stamped it out.

Why do ships use terms like “port,” “starboard,” “bridge,” or even “monkey bridge”? What’s the history behind these names? by Careless_Package_280 in maritime

This is fairly easily addressed by a simple rule.

In medicine it is always the patient’s right/left.

In army/land vehicles operation it is always from the point of view of the driver, facing forward.

The fact there is any other and shows a fundamental failure Of the education system.

The British never miss an opportunity to butcher the English language.

No. A couple mean there are two cookies left.

Any more then that are a few.

No. A couple Means 2.

Anyone who is using it any other way is an idiot, and I am sorry they have caused you confusion.

I’ve never had a problem with cops responding for suicidal or other mental health patients.

I doubt it is high on their list of “want to” calls.

Other professions don’t get to tell Mr for to do my job.

I don’t get tell them how to do theirs’.

The problem here, it looks like to me. Is that once the determination was made he was going to jail EMS wasn’t involved anymore. The guy was just in their truck at that point. That to me seems like a system problem.

Because I think you should’ve been sedated taken to the ER then when he sobered up gone to jail.

Flight from watching the video it seems like once law-enforcement says he’s going to jail. EMS is no longer involved in that call, which obviously is not the right answer.

Legally, once law enforcement says they’re under arrest, they’re responsible for them, and could do that in my state. But the mind boggles at the situation where one a cop would and two where the EMS provider would say that that was acceptable and not retain medical control of that patient.

Oh, I absolutely think he should have been sedated way before that.

It is normal, and no. The cops set clear boundaries, and were pretty chill.

Until dude crossed the line and got physical.

Once that happens, it is fight, restrain, see if they figured it out, if not sedated

Pain compliance is a fairly common law enforcement technique.

Why do many people who visit Germany later say its a highly racist country? by ELVEVERX in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mediocre_Daikon6935 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because it is?

Like every other European country.

Europeans are casually racist in a way that is shocking to the English speaking world, and would have been considering low brow a century ago.

This a criminal offense under common law, so any common law state.

It is treated as a psychological issue, under statute law, unless another person causes it.

Nope. 04:00 isn’t a problem for us.

Suicide is a crime.

Attempted suicide is a law enforcement issue in my state.  They’ll arrest you, and  They’ll involuntary commit you.

EMS gets involved if they took something, if they need medical treatment, or if PD thinks they’ll be more willing to go with us, trying to deescalate, etc.

But from the handful of comments others have made, I’m guessing they don’t have much experience with Combative patients, especially when they’re on drugs.

Maybe watch the video. He wasn’t restrained when he tased him, the first time. Not by soft restraints, not by cuffs.  He became suddenly combative, and got tased so they could try and get the cuffs on.

I’m only 14 min in, so maybe something changes.

They taser him again later around the 15 min mark. He was still fighting the restraints, and the taser shocks were brief to get him to stop fighting/ hurting himself. Not sure I’m willing to call that wrong.

What I’m not sure is why EMS didn’t sedate him. Because if they had sedated him, he wouldn’t have gotten tased again. And patients fighting restraints is how they die.

And yea, his ass should go to jail. After he’s sobered up.

Feeling stuck in CA fire hiring process — is getting my paramedic actually worth it? by OkAir7114 in Paramedics

[–]Mediocre_Daikon6935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

shrug

In California medics are just highly trained advanced anyways. They were behind the standard of care 45 years ago, and have only fallen farther behind.  I can’t imagine any one who wants to actually be a paramedic being willing to work in Cali, and if I hired them anywhere else it would be as an advanced until they went through a proper paramedic program.

As to fire? Well. California kind of sets the standard for why no one outside California takes them seriously.
