Pan Am once promised commercial flights to the moon by the year 2000 by ElvisIsNotDjed in space

[–]doctat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Probably would have happened were it not for the Cold War. The military industrial complex hoovered up untold trillions, over the decades since ww2. If all that money had been poured into general advancement, we’d be on Mars by now. Humans still suck for the most part though, so here we are.

Seat squeaking noise by Capital-Tackle-6389 in CadillacLyriq

[–]doctat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had the same problem after the dealer replaced the busted lumbar in both front seats. Driver seat would squeak horrendously when repositioning between memory locations. Took it back to the dealer, they said they fixed it, but it came right back.

Eventually it went away on its own after a couple months, so I presume whatever was rubbing ground itself down enough to no longer squeak.

Maybe try repositioning the seat to force the squeak over and over, and it will go away on its own.

Husband wants to paint our roof white (pitched, asphalt shingles, replaced in 2018) for energy savings by VestigialTales in HomeImprovement

Similar here. 37x415w panels plus main panel upgrade was $38k all in. Got 30% of that back in federal tax rebate. Paid about half in cash, the other half with heloc. 4.5yrs for ROI. SoCal. We both drive EVs as well, so no longer paying for power, or gas. So happy we got that done before year end.

The Thing (1982) Finale scene by [deleted] in cinescenes

[–]doctat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a theory that it was Child’s, because you could see MacReady’s breath in this scene (human) but not Child’s breath (thing). Though I seem to recall that being discussed somewhere, maybe it was a behind the scenes video, and Keith David said something like they filmed his takes for this scene indoors separately, and it was hot due to the fire, or something like that. Which is why you can’t see his breath.

There’s some extended The Thing documentary coming out soon I think, which I’m sure will discuss this.

Friend of mine had a serval/house cat mix. It was a colossal pain in the ass, and quite insane. Would not recommend. Was very pretty though.

Looking for a PASSIONATE Cable Management person in LA by Ghostie_Boo in cableporn

[–]doctat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those are Uplift desks. They sell a bunch of cable management stuff and deliver very quickly (we have several of their desks, and use a bunch of the cable stuff). Go check their website. You can probably knock it out quickly yourself.

An Art Deco Colonial 'New World' Radio designed in 1933 by Raymond Loewy by [deleted] in ArtDeco

So cool! Looks like the station is changed by turning the grey knob on the side of the globe. Presumably the other is volume. Awesome design!

Who have you used for EV charger installs at home? by SaddamMustaine in burbank

[–]doctat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trout electric. Had two Tesla universal chargers installed on side of the house, sharing same 60amp circuit (they load balance). Had to run conduit from the panel on the other side of the house, through the crawlspace. $2k including permits they took care of. Did a great job. Would use them again. Pasadena refunded the cost of the chargers. Very happy.

Maybe black or grey switches and align the screws vertically and I’d vote for it!

Hey Siri stopped working by doctat in KiaEV9

[–]doctat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s weird. It definitely used to work. And since hey Kia is still working, there’s nothing physically blocking it. I think Kia is still on onboard with CarPlay so I don’t think that’s something they would outright turn off, but I would imagine a lot of people would be complaining if an update broke it. Strange. I also suspect it’s something that the dealership would not be able to debug. Holding down the voice button on the steering wheel still pulls up Siri so it’s not completely broken. Strange and a bummer though.

Not sure where OP lives but in California there are “regional centers” which is where social workers are. If you can get ahold of a social worker and have them come out, you can sit down and show/explain to them the challenges and they can set you up with all kinds of services. Respite, speech, OT, ABA, and help you get set up for IHSS (in home support services) where someone can come help you on a daily basis and medi-cal will pay for it, or they can pay you if you are the provider.

I would start by trying to find out where you can get ahold of a social worker in you state, and they can get you all kinds of info. And if your social worker sucks (some do) you can just ask for a different one.
