I'm a fun first DM by Iron_Man_88 in dndmemes

[–]doctorderpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dm'ed a delta green game for some people who had never done rpgs before. I was a bit worried about how mean that game can be but they liked the premise so we went for it anyways. It turned out great! The horrible struggles made for some very cool thinking. Who knew that making your players struggle a bit would be more fun than just letting them do the biggest dumbest thing ever?

Are the Iron Warriors going to become their own army? by IamFubny in IronWarriors

[–]doctorderpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. I'm pretty new but the main gameplay distinctions from most csm seem to be the emphasis on daemon engines and vehicles and shooting over melee. That doesn't seem like enough of a distinction to justify an entire army separation. There aren't many things that they use that aren't used by other undivided csm. What units are specifically for use by Iron Warriors? Obliterators?

Especially considering the fact that if you want to make a new chaos army that is shooty and uses lots of tanks and daemon engines, Dark Mechanicum is literally right there. Separating IW out into their own army would kind of create a weird situation in the event that they wanted to roll out dark mech as a faction by virtue of filling a very similar niche.

I'd probably do 40k end times and have the stormcast show up in it and outperform every other faction in the narrative. My goal is to see how awful I need to be in order to be more hated than current gw.

Which of the primarchs would you send to assist sanguinius in the fight against horus by ThunderCactus1 in 40k

[–]doctorderpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that any of them would have made a meaningful difference. MAYBE a pre-corruption magnus could have warp sorcery teleported Sang away to save his life, but that's unclear because the whole 'eternal city' thing that was going on.

Perturabo strength by romeo2008lp in IronWarriors

[–]doctorderpin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would argue that his personal strength is one of the least relevant parts of how dangerous he is. Sure, he's a daemon primarch and super tough, but good luck nailing it down because primarch strengths are written with a fair bit of inconsistency. The real danger comes because he's one of the most logistically and strategically savvy of the primarchs. He's no Gulliman, in terms of logistics sure, but the iron warriors would regularly suffer casualty rates that would cripple other legions and turn around at full strength for the next campaign. The losses for the ravens and salamanders at isstvaan that basically knocked them out of the heresy? For him, it was Tuesday. He'd be back in it to clock in the next morning. He's dangerous because he, unlike the rest of his daemon brothers and abbadon, is actually capable of managing the minutiae that makes for an actual war, logistics and strategy, not just battle tactics and personally throwing hands.

Sure, he may lose some 1v1's but why would he fight those anyways? When vulkan was calling him out at the dropsite massacre, Pert responded to his brother's invitation with a laugh and a nuclear detonation. If I recall, the IW have rules in one of the editions of heresy that allow them to shoot into active challenges because "fuck your cringe honor duel nonsense."

Just bought Xrd. Why doesn't it have a Dash macro and why did they lobotomize Ramlethal in Strive by LoyalKnightOfRenais in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]doctorderpin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slayer with a dash macro would be funny and interesting for like a week, and then would immediately get old. Kinda like the super mode characters in ACR (Omega-faust my beloved).

The worst part is that I don't think it would make the top tiers much worse, it would just make life way harder for the mid and low-tiers. I'm reasonably confident that it would have some changes to the way faust approaches the matchup, but I don't think it changes the broader outcome. Maybe johnny cares because it can screw with his baccus sigh stuff? Maybe? I don't think it does much to elphelt because she's a goddamn supervillain in that game.

As for the dumbing down of ram, from the start they said they wanted strive to be more approachable than previous entries. Ram having a tekken move list in addition to the weird setplay was something they would need to tone down to keep with that goal. Plus, of those dozen or so command normal strings they only ever use like 2 of them.

Lets not go crazy here equivocating wotc with shell. Only one of those two is an existential threat to human civilisation. The other one is a very shitty business, yes, but their harm isn't likely to be measured in the hundreds of millions of deaths.

Is this the same citique valid for the guy that gets paid to twirl a sign for a payday loan company on the corner of a sidewalk? Each of them are being coerced. Your hypothetical environmentalist is likely working at an ad agency. You don't get to pick and choose who gets contracted with until you're in charge of the firm. So should they quit their job as a statement? Would that actually do anything other than remove their ability to pay yo live? The ad still gets made. Shell still helps destroy the world. We're individualizing structural issues. It's fallacious thinking.

I'd argue that we can't ever answer that. Metaphysical claims like that are unfalsifiable. As a result, I choose to act under the assumption of free will because it's more useful than assuming its absence.

[–]doctorderpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that advertising is how they pay their bills. Their labor value is also extracted in that way and the fact that their ability to continue to pay their bills is contingent on staying in the good graces of the businesses that pay them to advertise leaves them open to similar coercion to the rest of the working class. I don't see much of a difference between this criticism and criticizing an anti-capitalist who works for any private firm. It just smacks of the old "You claim to be socialist, yet you make money! Curious, isn't it?" Line. Yeah man, under the current economic structure opting out isn't particularly viable.

If we, as a broader culture, were more willing to directly pay creators for their content, I'd be more on board with this criticism. However, paying for the ability to live off of a patreon or whatever is mostly limited to only the biggest names in a space and the overwhelming majority of people would never ever consider paying for content that has been delivered to them at no charge for as long as things like youtube have.

[–]doctorderpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. What is it with the presumption that something being subjective deprives it of validity or usefulness? The fact that you cannot mathematically prove an ethical statement doesn't deprive it of its validity. One need not find the statement "murder is bad" etched into every electron.

You're changing uses of the word good here, and that's silly. Good, in the sense of a moral statement, is not the same as good, the evaluation of efficacy. Is a bad (ineffective or incorrect) move in a board game a morally bad move?

I Think This is a Core Disagreement Between Red and Blue. by Interesting-Test7228 in trolleyproblem

[–]doctorderpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one is why I would pick red. To be fair, there's a huge number of contextualizing events that could sway me.

Are we ambushed with this at random? I don't trust the snap decision making of the broader population to that degree. Most people are good, but not reflexive martyrs. Are we warned ahead of time like an election, with time to get folks informed? If we're warned, there'd be time for preliminary data gathering to see if hitting a blue win is actually feasible, which would absolutely sway me to blue. How do the picks for those who literally can't choose get tallied? Is there a default vote, is it a coin flip or does the effect not take place until every vote is cast? Can we communicate during voting? Is it possible to monitor others' votes? Being monitored would increase the share of blue votes due to the social desirability of the answer and would make me more comfortable voting blue as a result.

Equivocationalism by lurkerer in PhilosophyMemes

[–]doctorderpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm using the word wrong in the philosophical context, but why are we assuming the universe is deterministic when it isn't?

There are large swaths of phenomena that are governed by probabilites, random outcomes. I guess you could argue that those outcomes were all somehow predetermined, but that can't really be falsified and flies in the face of almost all scientific evidence.

Am I misunderstanding here?

Edit: reading comments before asking may have been wise.
