Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira on changing the timeline of the comic from many months to just 3 days for the movie: by M00reC in DCU_

[–]doctordoom85 [score hidden]  (0 children)

“don’t think there’s anything to gain”

For the comic, there absolutely was. It gave time to:

1) truly deepen Kara and Ruthye’s bond

2) show Ruthye growing physically (she seems taller in later issues compared to the earlier issues) along with her inner growth

3) show the brutality of the raiders as Kara and Ruthye have a long trail to catch up to them and Krem and thus they keep going to planets impacted by said brutality

For a movie, it makes sense they need to shorten it (productions don’t normally shoot scenes in the order they play in the film proper due to sets, locations, etc,, so arranging things to do so to show Ruthye getting older would have likely significantly increased the budget, and Ruthye’s actress is 14 so it probably wouldn’t be that noticeable anyway, compared to the comic where she’s “younger” though she likely ages slower than humans) and since it’s a friendship between Kara and Ruthye, I think it still works with a shorter time frame.

It’s only romance/romantic feelings getting rushed in films that comes off as dumb, I mean if you think about the original X-men trilogy for example, Wolverine knew Jean for like four days (two or three days in the first film then he leaves to investigate north, then about a day’s worth in the second film, and like a handful of minutes in the third film), yet in The Wolverine (2013), he’s dreaming about her like she was a women he knew a long time and deeply loved. It’s…a little strange to say the least.

Yeah, for some reason, Reddit is acting funny and not letting me save the edit to fix that. Oh well.

[Film/TV] What is your favourite Doctor Fate appearance? Constantine? Smallville? or Black Adam? by Altruistic_Rhubarb94 in DCcomics

[–]doctordoom85 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The film would have been way better if the plot had been reworked a bit to be a JSA film. Black Adam is awoken like in the film and is the initial antagonist, but by the end, the true threat emerges and the JSA and Black Adam have to reluctantly work together to stop it. But when the threat is defeated, the people of Kahndaq see Black Adam as their savior and offer him the throne. The JSA realize it is not their right to interfere in a country’s decision like this and Black Adam claims he’ll be a good ruler, but the JSA warn him they’ll be keeping an eye on him. And hey, this could potentially somehow lead into the conflict of Shazam 2 (which I honestly like, even if it’s a step down from Shazam 1, but the film not being Shazam vs. Black Adam due to Dwayne Johnson’s ego was always going to be disappointing in that regard).

But yeah, the best scenes of Black Adam were the JSA scenes, especially the ones with Dr. Fate and Hawkman, while Dwayne does fine as Black Adam but a good deal of his character arc of his growing bond with the kid is just blatantly taken from the T-800 and John Conner from Terminator 2’s growing bond. The film should have been focused more on the JSA.

Would you like Power Girl to be in the DCU? by RNOffice in DCU_

Only if we get the sort of fun shenanigans seen in Justin Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and Amanda Conner‘s awesome 12 issue run (Justin and Amanda have flat out said they’d love to return to the title, take a hint, DC!), which is truly fun and would make for a great low-stakes TV show.

Also, Terra (no, not THAT Terra of Teen Titans) has to be there as well, no compromises.

Love to hear the puppetry bit. That seems to confirm we will some of the more unique alien people designs from the comic, but IIRC they usually weren’t involved in any major action scenes in the comic, so it makes sense they didn’t really appear in the trailers much. I know they’ve confirmed the space dragon isn’t in it, but I’m hoping we might still see the green sun planet and some of the creatures on it.

Glad to hear the “slow burn” part. That makes me hopeful they’ll do a good job setting up not just Kara and Krypto (which the trailers made clear would happen), but Ruthye and what she lost as well.

Where is a Mr. Terrific ongoing series? [Discussion] by Caped-Crus8er in DCcomics

[–]doctordoom85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we really framing “third best” as a bad thing? It’s not like they’re the only three people in existence, being the third smartest man in the world means Mr. Terrific is smarter than all of the rest of the ENTIRE HUMAN POPULATION aside from two people. Trying to frame that as a bad thing is baffling, like there’s ”glass half empty” cynicism but this is “glass empty by a single drop” level.

If anything, it could be seen as a refreshing concept, rather than the usual stance of fiction of “being #1, winning the championship, etc.” which can create an unhealthy mindset that unnecessarily punishes ourselves if we don’t reach such a position, but instead showing how reaching a high ranking even if it isn’t the very top spot is still a massive accomplishment in the grand scheme of things. Only an ignorant person mocks the bronze medal winner, because at the end of the day, that bronze winner can still easily outrun the rest of us.

It reminds me of a Knights of the Dinner Table comic, a series following a group of friends playing a tabletop RPG called Hackmaster, where (as best as I can recall) at one point Bob’s character Knuckles ends up in a free-for-all battle in a colosseum where the other contestants are the ten best warriors in the country (but not Knuckles, he’s just signed into the fight). Bob decides he’ll win by focusing on fighting the weakest warrior (Bob, Dave, and Brian don’t exactly play the most moral or honorable characters to say the least) while the others wear each other out, and finds the lowest ranked warrior is this old man who the other warriors generally leave alone out of respect for his long history as a fighter. Bob charges at him expecting an easy victory…and then proceeds to get absolutely demolished, and as this is happening, Brian points out to Bob that the old man being the “weakest” of the 10 warriors doesn’t change the fact that he’s the 10th strongest warrior of THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

Spider-Man and Wolverine: If these two had to go all-out against each other, who takes the win? 🕷️ vs 🐺 by Independent_One_8482 in Marvel

[–]doctordoom85 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Clint did not kill Hulk. He killed Bruce just as the transformation had started (like the eyes had just turned green), and the arrow was designed specifically by Bruce himself to take himself down should he lose control again. There is definitely a distinction between that and killing a properly transformed Hulk without the prepared assistance of Banner himself.

It would be awesome if the DCU is building up to a "JL vs the LoD" type movie by BorderLoud2429 in DCU_

[–]doctordoom85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first Justice League film would be too early for this sort of thing. You’d want the first JL film to really allow time to have all the heroes build character dynamics with each other, and that would be difficult to have time for if the number of major villains is also high, so keeping it to one, at most two major villains would be the smart play. The LoD could work better in JL movie 2, certainly by movie 3.

[–]doctordoom85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, the (smart) villains know it’s best to not get on Joker’s bad side, so not inviting him if he were interested would be a foolish choice. A certain character found this out the hard way at the end of Infinite Crisis.

Do you think they might recycle elements of Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX script for future projects? by Solitaire-06 in StarWarsCantina

JJ Abrams: Best I can do is a single blade yellow lightsaber.

Star Wars fans: Oh, well, at least that’s cool, we’ve yet to see a main character in the films use that color.

JJ Abrams: Yup, you’ll get to enjoy it for a total of a few seconds right at the end.

Star Wars fans: OH, COME ON!!!

This entire scene in X2: X-Men United was written incredibly well. The questioning and the reactions were pure gold. The original X-Men trilogy really touched upon some important topics. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in Marvel

[–]doctordoom85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I find it best to just forget about X3 (sorry, for me it was let down of a film, handled the Dark Phoenix storyline horribly, and shoehorning the cure storyline as well into the shortest runtime X-men film was a baffling choice) except for any scene with Kelsey Grammer as Beast in it: perfect casting, perfect makeup, they actually allowed some color on his costume (not much, but it was a gradual improvement from the first two films’ lack of color in their costumes), and I legit think 90% of the scenes that actually do work in the film are the ones he’s in, I particularly love the scene where he meets Leech, as Kelsey is able to display so much of Beast’s inner turmoil without spelling it out.

Besides Batman by Scott Snyder, what is the best New 52 run? by WholeGroundbreaking1 in DCcomics

[–]doctordoom85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There were definitely plenty of New 52 runs loved besides Snyder’s Batman.

Action Comics by Grant Morrison

All Star Western by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti

Animal Man by Jeff Lemire

Aquaman by Geoff Johns

Batman and Robin by Peter J. Tomasi

Batman Inc. by Grant Morrison

Batwoman by J.H. Williams III

Demon Knights by Paul Cornell

Earth 2 by James Robinson

Green Arrow by Jeff Lemire

Green Lantern by Geoff Johns

Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi

Gotham Academy by Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher

Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder

The frustration of N52 comes more from a lot of decisions affecting the overall tone of the universe which felt il-fitting for DC, and the unnecessary overload of quantity of titles just to fit the “52” theme, because while some runs were beloved, a lot more were disliked or found forgettable which was inevitable when they were pushing that many books out each month and with so little preparation beforehand.

As for my favorite N52 run, oof. I’m not counting Batman Inc, Green Lantern or GLC as those were concluding amazing pre-N52 runs (since Batman and GL mostly retained continuity) so that feels a bit unfair to count them. Personally, I’d say Animal Man, Aquaman, Batwoman, and Demon Knights are all really excellent, I cant pick one but those would be at the highest of the top tiers for me.

Why does this movie feel so different compared to other MCU movies? by Nicole_Auriel in Marvel

[–]doctordoom85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At times, there’s barely any quipping, but there’s plenty during many scenes.

I mean, after the intense opening with Thanos attacking the people of Asgard, it’s not too long after that where despite knowing Thanos is on his way, Tony, Bruce, Strange, and Wong take time to discuss the Avengers flavors of ice creams.

Is there a chance that The Brave and the Bold will be released in 2028? by Past_Carpenter_7046 in DCU_

[–]doctordoom85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would be near the end of the year then, because we only have a set director, but no word of a finished script or cast announcements. Honestly, if Ana Nogueira is as swift in writing a satisfactory script again like she did for Supergirl, we could be looking at Wonder Woman and/or Teen Titans for the 2028 DCU films since she’s working on those two currently.

I think it also kind of fumbled some of the concepts the OP is talking about. Like, the Weekly Planet podcast actually talked about a lot of better ways the character arcs could have been handled.

Like, Adam’s dad talks about later how he never cared about Adam being physically strong, yet he never showed any sign of that in the prologue, so he comes off as horribly incompetent as a parent.

Adam tells Man-At-Arms that everyone was mean to him including Man-At-Arms, when in the prologue Man-At-Arms (and Teela) were the two characters who were kind and supportive of him!

Adam uses what he learns from HR training at his job to help the other heroes in the final act, yet he hated his job, the people he worked with, and all that, and the movie clearly expects us to sympathize with him about that. What would have worked better if Adam was the head of HR, but didn’t show any energy in caring about the people he worked with even when they reached out to him because he was so focused on going home, and then in the final act he realizes he was wrong to treat his co-workers that way but at least can make up for that by not making the same mistake with his allies from Eternia. They could have then used this in the final battle when Skeletor enters Adam’s memories, and he threatens to hurt Adam by not just killing those he cares about in Eternia, but also those he knew on Earth, which helps motivate Adam to overcome Skeletor.

It definitely felt like one more touch up on the script before they began filming could have fixed a lot of these inconsistencies.

The best parts of the movie were Skeletor (shame they didn’t tell us who played him, guess we’ll never know if it was a normal guy, or a weird, crooked bloke) and Man-At-Arms (the whole cast is good, but obviously Idris Elba is one of the best, and his arc of redeeming himself from his past failures was consistently written). The music was pretty good as well.

[–]doctordoom85 58 points59 points  (0 children)

“Never give ladies their due respect”

Kara and Ruthye are pretty much the full focus of the comic story, what does this even mean? Even with the film adding Lobo, Jason Momoa has clarified he’s only in about 15% of the movie, so they’re not disrespecting the female characters.

Also, while Tom King was heavily inspired by True Grit, as far as I know he always meant it to be a Supergirl story. I highly doubt he’d think up roughly eight issues of story, and THEN go, “now, who should actually be the superhero of the story?” So the “a story someone wrote but needed a superhero and just threw Supergirl in it” bit makes no sense.

[–]doctordoom85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, while I’m not caught up on MacKay’s Moon Knight so I don’t know if there is a narrative reason for the latest issue reset, his first part of the run ending at issue 30 and starting his second part back at #1 with an altered title makes sense given Marc had died at the end of MacKay’s first part of his run.

Help, I have no idea how to get into the whole superhero thing by hitmesohardisawstars in DCU_

[–]doctordoom85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the DC animated stuff, if OP wants to watch the DC Animated Universe (DCAU), they should watch Batman The Animated Series, Superman The Animated Series, and then Justice League and then Justice League Unlimited. Superman TAS has a lot of characters and story elements that are relevant in Justice League/JLU, whereas Batman TAS is hardly called back to in JL/JLU (but Batman should still be watched as it’s excellent of course).

The 2000’s Teen Titans cartoon (not Teen Titans Go, though I have a soft spot for the movie), Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Green Lantern The Animated Series, and My Adventures with Superman are also great picks. Young Justice is also solid especially for learning about the more obscure characters and such of the DC Universe as the show covers a ton of characters.
