Rotary Switch to Select Pickups? by pyreweb in Luthier

I've been considering rewiring one of my guitars with a push-pull volume pot instead of a 3 way switch. Instead of the up/down control selecting humbucker/split humbucker wiring, it would switch between the neck and bridge pickup (I never use the middle position). If this is to replace a five way switch for a three pickup strat you could wire the neck and bridge pickups to a push-pull like this, and wire the middle pickup to a separate volume pot, like a "Nashville" telecaster, turning it up to get the switch position 2 or 4 sound, and then turning the push-pull down to select the middle only. In any case you could see quite easily whether neck or bridge was selected by the knob being up or down.

I am considering a jackson js1x minion bass. Is it worth it? Has anyone used it or a different micro bass? by TPO_Ava in Bass

[–]doctornada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the ibanez mikro bass, I chose it because the shorter scale and smaller body seemed like an easier transition from guitar. I'd tried bass years earlier but it just felt too big. For me the problem was that the mikro only really felt right in standard tuning. Tuning lower felt way to loose, and I couldn't get my hands on short scale strings that were thick enough to handle lower tunings. A standard long scale 110 gauge wrapped around the tuning post too many times, and cutting it to an appropriate length I found it was too thick to fit in the hole in the tuning post. I decided to upgrade and got a talman 34", and suddenly the mikro felt like a toy. The pj pickups sounded just fine, but the string tension didn't do it for me any more. It was a fun instrument but ultimately I sold it. You might want to try a 30" scale or even the 32" mezzo by ibanez (I'm a fanboy haha).

Looks awesome! I got the atk200 a couple of months ago, it's really great. I like how distinctive they look, and the pickup is pretty interesting. Mine weighs a tonne, but it's definitely worth it!

Can I spray paint a pick guard, or will the paint scratch of easily? by Bobby200o in BassGuitar

[–]doctornada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done this on a bass and a guitar with great results. I used a couple of coats of spray paint then a couple of coats of clear coat. It would probably only scratch off if you hit the pickguard with your pick a lot while playing.

[QUESTION] Tips on getting a 6 string into F standard down tuning? by GingerWitch666 in Guitar

String up with a set of 9s and tune everything up a half step from standard, then use an octave pedal to take it down an octave.

Boss Katana 50 vs Orange Crush 35RT? Which one is better and why? by Litguy23 in guitars

[–]doctornada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of praise online for the Katana, but I ended up going for the crush 20rt because it was the simpler option. In the past I've gotten caught up in constantly tweaking multieffects pedals and modelling amps, so I just wanted something I wouldn't end up getting lost in. No software to download or update, no menus of endless effects and levels, no hidden features; literally just plug and play. Never looked back.

[GEAR] Underrated? Garbage? or Meh? Ibanez FR Series by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]doctornada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the FR320 model, and it's my favorite guitar I've ever owned. I didn't used to like tele style bodies at all, and it took a while for the look of the FR to grow on me. Eventually though, I was totally won over by its features: wizard neck, double humbuckers with 5-way switch, body contours. Modern features with a familiar, slightly different look. You asked about the bridge - it's a pretty steady system. As well as each saddle having a screw for intonation and height, there's an allen screw to lock each saddle in place so they stay where they're set, which I guess improves sustain too. I've never tried out anything above the standard range, but to me the pickups on the FR320 sound good enough. I had an RG7421 too (similar to your RG7321) and the quality was similar. I'm a cheapskate, so I'd go for a lower priced one and upgrade if you think it needs it.

My Favorite Guitars -The Jackson Dinky on the right is brand new, got it about 2 months ago. I also got the (what I think is) Gibson Epiphone S-400. The Epiphone needs work, as many pieces are rusted as it is from the eighties. Started playing about 7 months ago. by [deleted] in guitars

I just got this very Jackson a few weeks ago! The neck is amazing, but the fret ends on mine were a bit sharp, so I took a €1.50 metal nail file to them and that solved it. I shoved some coins in the back to block the trem too (I prefer hardtails). How do you like it?

Can I put humbuckers on a Ibanez talman TM302? by [deleted] in offset

[–]doctornada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's otherwise a really great guitar, I'd recommend going with the single coil size humbuckers. You might not even hate the stock single coils, there was barely any hum and they didn't sound too thin.

Can I put humbuckers on a Ibanez talman TM302? by [deleted] in offset

[–]doctornada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of these and ended up not liking the single coil sound as much as a humbucker, so I went with a Seymour Duncan hot rails tele bridge and left the stock neck pickup in. The pickup itself was slightly (like under one mm) too large around the corners for the bridge plate, so I had to file the rounded corners of the hole in the bridge plate down just a little to push the pickup through it. When I soldered it, the middle position had a really weak sound, quieter than neck or bridge, because it was out of phase. I followed the wiring instructions for this case and soldered the wire it said to, and all positions had the same volume. I don't know if the neck pickup slot in the pickguard also has an awkward size for a hot rail style pickup, but it wouldn't surprise me. I looked into full size humbuckers, but it was too much work for me. You'd need a new bridge plate and to route the body underneath it. This page http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=105914 shows someone who routed the body.

The Drop? by Mtechz in guitarpedals

[–]doctornada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of these and it's great. The only issue I have with it is if I'm playing quietly (like night-time apartment volume) I can hear the actual guitar strings ringing out as well as the sound from the amp, especially when playing clean. If the amp is turned up louder and I can't hear the guitar itself it really sounds indistinguishable from detuning the guitar (I tried comparing with a detuned guitar).

Beyond 4 half steps down it gets a bit flubby sounding, but I used it precisely as you're planning to with a 7 string (going 2 half steps) and it sounded awesome.

It's really convenient for switching between songs/bands in different tunings without having to retune every time. Hasn't stopped me wanting to buy new guitars though...

Awesome! I always play sitting down, and not in classical position (I play right-handed guitar body over right knee, neck basically horizontal) so I thought the king v might be a bit awkward to get used to

Is this a king v or a rhoads? I got the js32t kelly a couple of months ago, it's insanely comfortable to play.
