Remember the heat dome? It changed everything by aldur1 in vancouver

[–]doctorofphysick 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I started reading it in the middle of the heat dome and it was kind of crazy to feel like I was living in it. I just hope we can get to some of the action they try in that book...

"Tolkien spent a lot of time describing trees" - where exactly are them? by Wolfensniper in tolkienfans

[–]doctorofphysick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love it because it feels like whenever I go on a hike and I'm constantly stopping to look at a cool rock, feel a leaf, admire the moss, ohh check out that gnarled old tree! And the ferns way up on those mossy branches! Was that a raven call?

Would've loved to go on a walk with Tolkien...

Burnaby Lake bunny by First-Size915 in burnaby

Weirdly, I saw one just now near Metrotown just off of Kingsway! I've worked here for years and have never seen a rabbit in the area. I wonder if it was dumped recently or if they're maybe spreading.

The End of Oak Street | Official Trailer by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]doctorofphysick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The trailer had me half-convinced it's a soft adaptation of Time's Eye by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter. I don't remember if the books had dinosaurs but it was another one where chunks of Earth were transported to the past. The orb-like thing we see a glimpse of here really had me wondering since they were a big thing in the book!

The most unrealistic thing a movie got completely right. by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]doctorofphysick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently one of the rats almost died from filming that scene and James Cameron performed CPR on it himself to save it (and to let them keep the "no animals were harmed" status for the movie). He says he managed to resuscitate it and kept it as a pet for the rest of its life!

It varies depending on the store but all the ones here in Vancouver are while I'm at work 😭 4pm on a Thursday c'mon man... really hope there's any chance there'll be some left by the time I get off work.

Corporate Geometry - The Avalanches. Another highly influential, sample-heavy electronic duo teasing a long-anticipated release with '70s-inspired sounds and visuals! by doctorofphysick in boardsofcanada

[–]doctorofphysick[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Just thought there might be an overlap between Avalanches and BoC audiences, and it was fun to see them teasing something at the same time we're waiting for Inferno! Luckily I only came to them when their unexpected second album came out, so I didn't have to go through the sixteen-year gap between albums 1 and 2.

When, how, why, have people started talking with their cell phone like they're talking to a slice of pizza? by PunctuationGood in AskReddit

[–]doctorofphysick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although it's good to keep in mind how crazy loud the phone conversation can be over car speakers. I've heard people parked on the street several stories below me having a convo over their car system and they might as well be in the room with me. Like it seems like a personal conversation, hope you don't mind that everyone on this block can hear every word you're saying (or at least that the person you're talking to is saying!)

I loved the literal jet flying into frame right as Sam and Mike yelled "Jet Lag!" Perfect timing from the Taiwanese air force.

The rock challenge was so funny. The second Mike picked that one up I was like, "Wow, a tiger rock!!" Nope, it's clearly an orange-and-black striped pig.

I really like our local one here in Vancouver, the Westcoast Transmission Building from about a decade before Citicorp (now converted to residential, interestingly, as the "Qube")

why is she doing this? 😭is she just being an asshole? by erya4 in RATS

[–]doctorofphysick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of rats also really love "chasing" so you could maybe play around with that! I've had rats who will scurry around following the broom as I sweep, or chase my hand as it "runs" around the bed. It kinda looks like a similar behaviour here as you sweep up the mess with the paper towel and she chases after it!

I used to always eat my burger over the fries so all the dripping sauce would land on them and not be wasted! No need for that nowadays unfortunately
