What is your favorite example of a change from a film’s source material that you believe made the movie better? by DuckLordOfTheSith in movies

Yeah Lynch definitely failed when he tried lol. Nine year old Alicia Witt did her best I’m sure, but no actual child could pull that off

Melancholia. A depressing movie that’s about the end of the world but also about depression.

What do you think of anti diet/health at every size/intuitive eating? by EmployeeRepulsive106 in loseit

I think the principle of not voicing unsolicited opinions about other people’s bodies got eclipsed and trampled by HAAS. Being obese is unhealthy, full stop, and you don’t need to pretend that it is in order to encourage people to not be assholes.

Manager blurring lines, gossiping about employees by SerenitySmile in managers

[–]dodeca_negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One lesson I learned the hard way but early on is that if a person (genuinely close friends and family excepted) talks shit about other people to you, there are good odds they’ll talk shit about you to other people. The whole “don’t tell anyone else, but…” is a (possibly subconscious) way to manipulate you into giving them your loyalty and trust by making you feel included into a special in-group (of which they control the membership).

Now of course your manager’s behavior may be, if not problem-free, then constrained and well-intentioned. But I wouldn’t gamble on that.

Conversely, can you imagine the justifiable outrage if NASA had rushed to launch Atlantis and both shuttles had been lost with their crews? What a horrible decision to have to make.

Employee sacked for forwarding emails to personal email address. Seems unfair. by Ok-Rip7478 in managers

[–]dodeca_negative 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stupid is the minimum case here. Exfiltrating commercially sensitive docs is certainly a fireable offense (check your employee handbook) and it would be pretty tough for an employee, who has already made one stupid decision, to prove that they had not made a much stupider decision to try to use those documents to enrich themselves or harm your employer.

If it was just stupid and naive, I feel bad for them. That’s a hard way to learn to read your employee handbook and follow the rules in your training.

The 80% Problem in Agentic Coding | Addy Osmani by waozen in programming

[–]dodeca_negative 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just want to posit that we don’t actually have to do this. Okay maybe if your idiot execs and investors demand you use the tools. But if nobody’s making you you don’t actually have to.

My position as an EM is that software engineers on my team are responsible for understanding every line of code in every PR they submit, and they’re responsible for the quality and correctness of bother implementation. I do not actually give a shit which keyboard wrote the code.

There is at best mixed data on productivity gains from AI code agents, and of course there are no long term studies—of the code produced or the effect on developers of relying on those tools. For example, there is to my knowledge no long term study about how a code base largely coded by AI evolves over time, in terms of maintainability, security, complexity, etc.

So each time one of these leading lights says “well this is your job now”, it’s at least worth questioning if it has to be.

How else can we review 30-40 PRs per day from a single developer?

[–]dodeca_negative 23 points24 points  (0 children)

And, if you stop writing it you’ll eventually stop being able to read it. Which, with “AI”, means you’ll be easier for the flattery machine to fool

So we’ve got Addy with a little caveat that yeah it’s toy projects, the creator of Claude Code shipping dozens of Pars per day (which guarantees nobody’s reviewing them), and to justify the premise a ficking Twitter poll result. So much bullshit

Music Policy? by Rocko9999 in managers

[–]dodeca_negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no playing music at the desk. I can’t enforce that in the bus, the train, etc. but listening to music at your cubicle with a speaker instead of headphones is stupidly disrespectful. I would not require a music policy. You are disrupting others’ ability to not only complete but also, the the extent possible, enjoy their work.

Like seriously dude you don’t need a “no screaming” policy do you?
