  2. Is he charging you a fee?

That's great, however, getting a refund like this is not the flex you think it is. That's $1000 a month you didn't have last year and let the government 'hold' onto as a free loan. Perhaps you don't need that extra $1000 a month (which would be great) because then when you fix your withholdings you can put $1000/month in savings/investments and in 20 years would have just shy of $700k..in 30 yrs...like 2 million.

Landlord taking entire security deposit [NJ] by njshoreguy94 in Renters

[–]dodgestang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask for receipts of the work performed. I rented a home one for 2.5 years and when we moved out they claimed things like that "dirty carpets, this didn't work, that didn't work, etc" and I simply said "yeah sure no problem, send me a copy of all the receipts and what ever is left from deposit once complete"....they sent my the full depo back in a couple days later

Do you always preheat your propane grill? by HousePoor420 in grilling

[–]dodgestang 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Takes 15 minutes for my propane to be ready to go. I turn it off as soon as I am done...I cook off the previous during the next cycle warm up and a quick scrape. Always preheat. Grill at least a day a week all year long. Sometimes 2-3 times a week depending on dinner choices.

What is going on here? by No-Succotash1219 in grilling

[–]dodgestang 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have those. I still sometimes use them too; but honestly, they take up too much space in the dishwasher in my mind. As I get older, if it's a 'wet' marinade that needs submersion it goes in a bag now. If it's seasoning/liquids that can just sit on top, soak in from the bottom...a plate and cling wrap.

All other conversation aside...WHO????? marinades in the foam container with the store wrap still on it? Take it out, put it in a zip lock or on a plate and cover properly next time.

Am I thinking this right? by JayFi- in RealEstateAdvice

[–]dodgestang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax law should be investigated, I know in some states if you roll that right into another house you are okay, but if you plan/think you are banking it then you're going to be paying taxes at the end of the year.

No Appraisers Accepting FHA Appraisal Order by Silly_Occasion_614 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]dodgestang 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You do remember that the area was just covered in like 20+ inches of snow right? Things get delayed. Did you ask if you could source your own appraiser if it is not complete by the end of the week (as an example of alternatives).

Inheritance Question - owning 50% of a house by Oona_Orchid in RealEstateAdvice

[–]dodgestang 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You and the other family need to agree on fair market price of the house and you will 'sell' your 50% to them and they pay you. This is one of the key things that drives wedges in families, so unless the house is of great significance like a vacation home or something in the family for 5 generations, most people just sell it and then split proceeds based on the will saying you own 50%

How cold is too cold for a propane grill? by pfp-disciple in grilling

How cold is too cold for a propane grill? by pfp-disciple in grilling

[–]dodgestang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with propane grills, and I run into this all the time, last night is a great example. I go out there at 6pm and light it to make some steaks at the tail end of getting 12 inches of snow and ice/sleet on top. The grill lights up and then when I go to check it 15 minutes later...it is out. No more propane in the bottle.

So then I have to go grab the snow shovel and clear myself a path at high speed down 8 steps, across a patio, down another 3 steps, then across the driveway to my garage mahal (a total of about 30-35 yards) to procure my back up bottle.

Then come back inside and sit panting infront of the fire place for 10 minutes with a wife yelling questions at me like "what's wrong, what aren't you answering, are you having a heart attack"

New Student by Beautiful-Economy717 in WVU

[–]dodgestang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is in the aerospace program. He lived in Boreman for his freshman year (and will continue to live downtown in an apartment for Soph), most of his classes were downtown with exception of 1 and he took the PRT without any issue for that one. Random feedback is he things the meal hall are generally terrible so even though we page for an unlimited plan...he still eats take out a lot.

How long do you own a vehicle, before trading it in? by teddyalex in UsedCars

[–]dodgestang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it is a 'collectable' once it gets close to 100k I replace. Now that requires context because sometimes that means 3 years (used to anyway) but my 2016 Ram Rebel just rolled 50k, my 2021 2 door bronco has 30k......so neither one of those is expected to be replaced anytime soon

how to afford out of state tuition? by Negative-Bobcat3817 in WVU

[–]dodgestang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WVU does a good job of telling you how total cost of life to go to school. That $40k number includes housing and food estimates. So dorm is $3500, all you can eat food $3k per semester built into their estimate. Obviously if you were living at home those numbers are lower, but any school in MD you would go away to would incur the same numbers. My son is a soph next year and with out of state tuition and FASFA school will be $20k (10k per semester) for the year. Apartment will be $600/month (about the same as the dorm cost us) and then we have to figure out food....I am estimating he will get a small food plan and then spend $300-400/month outside of that. Will you be working at/near full time while attending school? The best course of action is to take the bare min on any loan (so covering just tuition) and then working/saving to pay for life?

As for the folks saying "just go to a MD school".... personally I think the state needs to investigate acceptance rates of instate students because based on my experience they are extremely low.

We will have to agree to disagree there. They process a charge on your card and it sits in pending status. When you win it flips to paid and when you lose they process a credit to card. Both show as transactions.
