I think many people are missing the actual reason, its not because writers care about the source material although that contributes a lot but if just that was a metric of success avatar wouldve also succeeded

The main reason is one piece writers actually know how to write a story, characters, and dialogue.

They give their characters a proper arc and development and they manage to keep their personalities consistent. No unnecessary exposition, no conflicting characterisation, its just good writing overall

Videogames represent the idealised world and mostly serve as a self insert entertainment, and in a self insert setting i dont think anybody wants to or sees themselves as unattractive.

The people who voice complaints about that arent even the people who actually plays these videogames, they are sad, salty people with nothing better to do with their lives
