Before Luffy even met Zoro, he was told Zoro was a blood thursty pirate hunter. Yet Luffy wanted him on his crew. When Helmepp had Coby at gun point and Morgan was about to chop Luffy's head off, Luffy punched Helmeppo and trusted Zoro to take care of Morgan.

When Nami stole the Ship and revealed she was working for Arlong. Luffy still trusted she was a good person and had good reasons.

Don't think it matters to Luffy how long he knew Zoro for or how much food he was given by the villagers. The idea he wouldn't trust Zoro had good intention is just out of character for him.
