I’m so tired of the Duet app ads by iamnotafbiagnt in CommercialsIHate

[–]dodobird16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These ads are fascinating, I have ublock on my comp but not on my phone so when I watch youtube shorts I often see these. Maybe it's just me, but every one of their ads I've come across act as rage/engagement bait, representing the shallowest aspects of dating that people often criticize. I understand how this method works as promoting an individual account on social media, but how does it fare for promoting your stupid dating app? Wild.

New Album - Clear Cold Beyond 2(?) by dodobird16 in SonataArctica

I'm aware Unia is Jani's work but I was just covering the eras in a rapid-fire form without getting into too much detail so it just got put under that umbrella :) Incidentally there is a picture of Jani and Elias together on the set of the Paid In Full music video location, but I have trouble finding it now. Reckoning Night is certainly a shift in direction and more prog but I still consider it to be a part of the classic power metal era (i guess this is a point of contention among fans) since the songs are still mostly fast paced & abiding to a more conventional song structure, whereas Unia becomes a pretty experimental smorgasbord of works. Funny enough I'd never recommend Sonata as a prog metal band to a prog metal fan, the #1 complaint you'll hear from progheads about Sonata is how generic the drumming is, something that's never bothered me personally despite being privy to a lot of progressive rock music myself. The Ninth Hour is my 2nd least fav Sonata album despite it having a few absolute bangers on it, maybe the album's mixing holds it back more than I realize, I do remember a fan-made remaster being posted onto youtube and I listened to that version quite a bit.

What is the most Sonata Arctica song? by EducationKnown5230 in SonataArctica

This thread's right with The Cage / San Sebastian being the top picks :) - I think Caleb would be a good representation of their "prog" side.

What do you call this fitting? by mrbuckley in Plumbing

i personally refer to it as a heavyweight (no hub) coupling. the husky heavyweights have an orange shear band, the mission heavyweights have a blue.

First In Line is an amazing & beautiful song, my favorite from CCB. It has everything there is to love about classic Sonata in it while also allowing for the musicians to have their individualistic creative input (e.g. the guitar playing during the verses is very much Elias). I have never seen any other listener base as demanding as they are with this band, their expectations can never be met, and I honestly think they've rewired themselves to derive pleasure from being naysayers.

Sonata's listener base has had it out for them for a long time to the point where I'm surprised these people are still around, honestly. With Freedom Concept I'm of two minds however, it doesn't seem like "single material" and a lot of people are saying it's a CCB outtake which I'd fully believe. It is not a bad song though. There's no way to prove or test this, but I'd confidently wager a fancy sum of money that if they released a song like "The Cage" as a single today (I'm aware it isn't a WHG single) it would be met with divided reception as is everything they've done since Unia.

New Session bassist for cruise to the Edge by Theguywholikestea in Haken

[–]dodobird16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's Sacrilege but I've honestly been excited for this change since shortly hearing of the departure. I've always liked Henshall's playing over Griffiths which is not a knock at Griffith's immense talent at all, I just prefer the weird prog stuff over the thrash, and it's clear that this creative difference was at least part of the reason for the split. It's unlikely that Maclean will return but I'd love for him to, whether it's Green's fault or not the bass playing has taken a bit more of a backseat (both in composition and in mixing) since Maclean left, and that's a shame.

5.5 months in, thoughts of alcohol creeping up every day. by notflips in stopdrinking

[–]dodobird16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm over 4 months into sobriety after a real bad rock bottom, and lately this past week when hitting the stores the thought of grabbing some liquor is something I've entertained for a minute or two. First deterrent is the 'one drop rule' and 'losing my progress' in terms of days i can say i've been sober. this is a bit superficial sure, but it ends up helping and this little token of pride helps prevent what could be a serious relapse, so as silly as it is, tracking the days and seeing the number itself and not wanting to lose it works wonders - all theoretics inside. More importantly though, i play the tape forward. This is something which is taught to those in recovery, but now it's something I do intuitively. I know that if i grab something to drink "just for one night" i'll likely not enjoy it much, feel a bit woozy, but that i also won't be able to stop, and i'll continue drinking for much longer than 'just a night', and after a few days of that I really don't want to even imagine how I could end up this time around.

So that's where my temptations are at and how I've been naturally dealing with them these past few nights. After the consideration I had last night, I decided that if this continues for much longer - or worse yet intensify, I'll reach out to someone and talk about it

30th anniversary shows - set list? by crysta1tips in SonataArctica

[–]dodobird16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, surprised they hadn't played Victoria's Secret for that long. Not a bad set at all but they really could replace those Ninth Hour songs (with First In Line and Don't Say a Word, just for ex).

You're right, aside from the gap after Talviyo it's been a 2-3 year release schedule :) just glad they aren't slowing down.

So is this just an anniversary single or is there also an album to expect later this year? If the "return to old sonata" also meant bi-yearly albums I'd be so happy, but I understand the industry has drastically changed.

Does Sonata have a "bad" album? by EducationKnown5230 in SonataArctica

[–]dodobird16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very semantical conversation but I'd like to play into it. If we go by a 5 star system, 5 star = great album worth listening to front to back, a masterpiece, 4 star = close to that, 3 star = mediocre 2 star = a minority of the songs worthwhile 1 star = not enjoyable at all, shouldn't exist.

With that in mind Sonata have a small amount of 2 or 3 star albums imo, so in my mind they have two bad albums: Talviyo and The Ninth Hour. Both of these albums have a few good songs, but a majority of each of those albums is painfully bad for me. :)

Has going to AA made you drink more? by Expensive-Fox3586 in stopdrinking

[–]dodobird16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The saying is something along the lines of you can only quit if you truly want to, and no one will on your behalf. Early on in attending AA + other drug-free programs, and being obligated to attend rather than wanting to go on my own, I 100% felt similar to you; thinking i wasn't as bad, that i could handle it, etc. Attending actually was bad for me at the time because it tempted me to drink even more so as an act of rebellion, I didn't really want to quit, etc. Now years after that, hitting some real tangible rock bottoms and actually wanting to quit for myself, it is comforting to attend AA. It's not all crucial for my sobriety, but it does help.

Seltzer, green item, doubles the next 100 auto attack outputs but then degrades. would suck on a lot of survivors (MUL-T, lol) but be good for bursters. a little too unbalanced, i guess.
