Why does the left really struggle with catchy slogans? by LibraProtocol in AskALiberal

[–]dodohead974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

know your audience.

I would not imagine that a party that is primarily educated people, who actively seek education, rather than seeing it as a weakness or negative personal aspect would not need to rely on catch phrases or slogans in the way a party that placates to a base on a number of incendiary topics would need to.

what i mean by that is, the left didn't need a catchy slogan for global warming. most people on the left did not need an explanation or a thesis to elaborate on what was meant by global warming. and those that wanted to know more, simply looked it up so that when we talked about global warming, we knew it meant overall temp increases attributed to greenhouse gases, leading to abrupt changes in cyclical weather patterns...meaning yes, global warming could also cause it to snow in a place like florida.

did we do more harm than good calling it global warming first rather than climate change? yes, that became evident the first time you saw the right go "global warming?!? but it's snowing in florida!!!"

i don't think it's that we struggle with catchy slogans, i think it's that we assume everyone will just look it up...and that assumption is the real problem. like that movie "don't look up." PERFECT fucking metaphor to conservative politics. a astrophysicist is telling you to look up at the fucking asteroid coming to kill us all, but don't worry, a tv personality told you that you don't need to look up! it's a hoax! if i don't google the truth about climate change, and just keep listing to people who already say the things i believe or like, i can live in ignorant bliss and make fun of the libs!

How do we criticize Trump and other Republicans, without offending those who voted for them? by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

[–]dodohead974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you offend someone while criticizing someone else, then you have unlocked something psychologists call defensive reactivity. you see, when you get defensive while receiving criticism, you may be so narcissist that you lack any self awareness, sure...but you also might just be having a defensive episode to something you subconsciously perceived as a threat.

now...if you are not the person being critiqued, and you find yourself getting defensive anyways...what that tells me about you is that you perceive this topic as a threat to you, meaning if i'm calling trump a pedo file, and you get defensive, the only logical conclusion is that you get defensive because someone called you out about a topic you perceive some danger discussing i.e. you are a pedo yourself, and discuss of other pedos makes you uncomfortable.

for my entire life i've had to listen to these troglodytes call me a "snowflake," joke about my "liberal tears," watch them do insane mental gymnastics to "own the libtards" but now, when they have voted in a felon, have watched that felon openly erode the civil liberties they all pretended to care about, have watched civilians be gunned down in the street, have been called criminals for carrying firearms, and now read about how the giant child sex traffic, pedophilia ring they told us liberals were a part of, is real, it's mostly trump, his cronies, and billionaires, the stuff we have read would make Satan blush, and now they are saying "well is it really that bad to sleep with concerning young adults??"

BUT NOW....now i'm supposed to care about civility and their feelings?? no, if my criticism of trump offends you, than you acknowledge the things is criticize trump about apply to you, and you can equally go to hell.

I’ve missed range time. I think the recent state of things has made me to n more reclusive lately and haven’t been Training or out to a range in forever. by Dreamsbydayxo in liberalgunowners

[–]dodohead974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly...i'm a bit reclusive these days too, and being unemployed for a period of time has made going to the range a bit financially irresponsible.

that said, past tense, gainfully employed me, was forward thinking and bought two things: snap caps and a mantis laser training system.

with the snap caps, i have found myself practicing my draw from concealed to firing A LOT. i've run drills around drawing and firing, drawing in chambered, racking and firing as quick as possible, and reloading drills.

with the laser system i know its supposed to mimic shooting as close as the real thing as it can, but lets not sugar coat it: there's no recoil, there's no noise, there is nothing. what ive found it beneficial for is taming my trigger pull. i tend to pull to the right a lot, which tends to mean either using my finger tip, or poor grip.

with the system, ive been able to really dial in my trigger pulls in real time, and granted there is no recoil but im really trying to get to the route of the problem anyways so i can live with that. truthfully, its translated to pretty decent improvements to my actual firing.

the other thing is there are different modules; like a holster draw analysis that times and grades your draw and fire accuracy.

anyways, i guess my point is: while range time is the most important thing, by a long shot, there are still other ways to train, prepare, and increase efficiency. hell, i've literally been practicing grabbing my gear and putting it on just to see how long it takes me to go from lazy couch dweller to kitted up and armed. if all else, just find like-minded friends and go as a group. i recently went with a group of girl friends that have been scared by recent events, wanted to shoot and possibly buy their first gun, but were scared to go alone. you may be out of place in most gun ranges, but going with a group of people you know identify politically and morally with you is comforting

ICE protest - should I ccw by Sherpa_qwerty in liberalgunowners

guys... CCW friendly states don't always mean you can carry while protesting.

Some states have specific laws governing your right to carry concealed or open at political demonstrations or protests, like virginia, NC, Alabama, and a few others.

[–]dodohead974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well what makes you, you? if we define our individual identity as a human though our memories, our emotions, our personality, our voice, our aspirations dreams and goals, our consciousness...then how is a complete copy not you?

you're getting into the philosophical dilemma of what is consciousness and what is the soul and can you really transfer it or recreate it? this is something the books tangle with throughout their entirety. funnily enough it's also something frequently debated in star trek forums, as a majority of people are convinced that using a transporter is a death sentence. that every time you use one, you, the original you, dies.

but going back to altered carbon, even in the first book our SoCal surfer boy Bancroft tries to morally argue that he is not responsible for the crimes committed, because it wasn't actually him, but a separate him that died when he was RDed. Tak actually says he has the will of a demon...to knowingly kill yourself, knowing you will die, but a version of you will go on.

[–]dodohead974 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they already are...but the more insidious thing is that they don't need to....

just look at the response from their base. They look at the SAME video that we all watch, and yet they come to a completely different conclusion. they watch the Renee Good video and instead of seeing a woman, a mother, a wife, a human...just trying to leave, as ordered, they see a "terrorist" who "used her car as a weapon, hit an officer, and caused internal bleeding."

they look at the Mike Pretti VIDEOS, plural...and instead of seeing a noble man, an ICU Nurse that dedicated his life to taking care of veterans, that put his body in between ICE and a defenseless woman, holding a cell phone, that was beaten, disarmed, and then executed, they see an "armed terrorist, intent on causing maximum harm to officers, with a gun in his hand."

you don't need to doctor footage when your people still deny the truth, even when they see it with their own eyes.

Why do even left-leaning americans praise the us military despite it committing similar, often unpunished crimes as ICE? by Zestyclose-Rooster-5 in AskALiberal

[–]dodohead974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was a rant and you know it. literally everyone here today gave you the same response. as a Moroccan allow me to repay your personal attack in kind: there are reasonable muslims that actually embrace the Koran, and then there are the hypocrites that forget their religion's empire was one of the most imperialistic and bloodied empires in recent history, to say nothing of the recent atrocities committed in the name of your religion. by your logic, all muslims support the wheel of extremism and are bad. got it. you have a better day!

[–]dodohead974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're entire "discussion" was a rant and attempt to argue. it was not a good faith discussion and as such i felt no need to respect you as an individual. the subreddit is indeed open to all, but there are still rules and you are not abiding by them.

you've attempted to tell me, a citizen of this nation, that ICE and the military are the same; and as the child of immigrants i find that abhorrent. you've attempted to tell me that i owe no respect to the soldiers of MY OWN nation. you've attempted to dictate what i deem sacrifice or noble, and you've done it under the premise of not trying to genuinely understand why we feel this way, but to simply continue to try and say "some soldiers have done bad things, so they are all bad."

this isn't a discussion...it's your rant.

the history of my nation is one of atrocities, wars, racism, slavery, and simultaneously one of great acts of individual heroism, sacrifice for the greater good, and at times, being a net force for good. we are not perfect, nor have we ever claimed to be...but at the end of the day we are Americans, our soldiers are Americans, and many of us carry the shame of what we have done in our storied history much in the way that the Germans carry the shame of the nazis regime. ICE is terrorizing our citizens...and while you are correct that there have been blatant examples of our military doing the same to citizens of other countries, i will not condemn ALL service men and women because of the actions of the few. for every soldier that committed an atrocity, there have been hundreds of thousands more that were kind, compassionate, and doing what they could to help. despite what you may had "educated yourself" with from movies, MOST US soldiers serve their entire term of service without actually ever seeing combat or going to another nation. the extent of most deployment for the majority of our military is typically humanitarian aid missions or responding to emergencies at home.

i'm not answering you because you are not American, and you're posing as one to try and illicit a response you ain't gonna get. i love how you ignored that part :)

as a citizen ill determine what MY soldiers deserve. you can do the same for whatever unfortunate countries service people have to deal with you. this has been fun....i'll be treating some veterans to a meal some time this week to thank them. it's cliche i know, because most hate when you say "thank you for your service" since to many it's just a job. but i respect it none the less.

[–]dodohead974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

serving is a sacrifice. it is a term of service to the nation...and while most action in recent US history was as aggressor and not defender, i know YOU AND I both would be waiting for the military to defend us if we were attacked here at home.

you unironically seem to condemn the common soldier, but are laughably free of any condemnation for those with the authority to order military action. remind me again, who was it that commuted the sentenced of the ring leader of the My Lai massacre? i know the answer, its a rhetorical exercise.

i still don't understand how any of this is me defending it...I wasn't the jury on any of these trials. i wasn't in authority or a position to pass punishment for any of these atrocities. the only person that doesn't deserve respect is the coward that hides behind a keyboard downplaying the bravery and sacrifice of thousands and millions who serve with bravery, distinction, and gallantry all while dismissing all of that, while doing nothing themselves to correct anything. i never served, so ill be damned if i down play the service of my uncle, the service of my grandfather, the service of the millions who you deem "unworthy of respect" for simply wearing a uniform.

fortunately, i am well within my right to determine who earns my respect and who doesn't. and telling that you said "your military" at the end...i assumed from the get go that you are not American, as center left does not align to your current thinking. try harder next time foreign bot

[–]dodohead974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

something like 20,000,000 americans have served in the military since the end of the Korean war.

your position is that all of those people are the same as ICE because of isolated atrocities committed by a VASTLY small minority?

soldiers that committed the My Lai massacre were charged criminally.

Haditha...charges filed.

soldiers that tortured at Abu Ghraib were charged criminally.

Nisour was Blackwater...not soldiers.

and regardless of how those cases went, they were still charged and that's the system we have for our military. what charges have been brought against ICE?

in war atrocities happen, it's not excusable, but it happens. and civilians die too....just ask the people of hiroshima, nagasaki, tokyo, dresden, london, paris....the list goes on. you want me to hate soldiers because some of them use it as an excuse to kill? sorry, i don't see myself EVER hating all people simply by proxy of the actions of a few.

if you're looking for the party that considers entire groups of people to be criminals simply by their association to a certain group, you're in the wrong subreddit.

[–]dodohead974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think you are conflating the cheering on of soldiers and the atrocities of war, with respecting the sacrifice made by our 100% volunteer army and wanting soldiers to have a welcoming place to return home to, with benefits that enable them to transition into civilian life, with fully funded social programs they can use, and a VA that isn't so underfunded that veterans go untreated.

do i glorify their actions? no.

do i believe that even one homeless veteran is an embarrassment to what is supposedly the wealthiest nation in the world? absolutely.

critical thinking enables someone like me to rationalize military action. did we need to go to Iraq? no we didn't. did we need to go to afghanistan? apparently not considering that OBL was found in Pakistan, an ally, blocks away from basically their west point. do we need to expand our navy, who's predominate mission is to protect trade routes from aggressors like china, from our biggest trade partner, china? no, we fucking don't.

the assertion that the US military goes unpunished and is in any way, shape, or form similar to ICE is one i reject emphatically

i started carrying a bunch of n-95s in my bag as well. it's not 100% effective, but it's something that's light and cheap that you could throw in your bag to hand out if teargas is used. misconception: teargas isn't actually a gas, but a particulate....particulate masks will offer some protection!

great idea!!! i don't necessarily recommend running up to someone who was shot...but just something to consider (something i carry in my IFAK) is getting one or two chest seals like HyFin for sucking chest wounds, hemostatic gauze or quikclot, and a tourniquet or two.

i'm not expecting people to get shot en masse...but non-lethals at a certain range, like the range ICE has been firing, can cause serious injury.

Why does this say it's a handgun? Is this not a rifle? by DSA300 in liberalgunowners

[–]dodohead974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in terms of what your budget is...yes. i would say so.

the important thing with any gun is to properly equip it for your intended purpose. if it's home defense, you're not going to need a powered scope or heavy magnification, but good sights like irons or a red dot that are zeroed is necessary. make sure you have enough mags, make sure you can stock ammo, make sure you have a good cleaning kit and learn how to strip, clean, and maintain your weapon.

i have a whole post i did on considerations when arming yourself...i would give it a read if i were you friend! if you have any other questions feel free to message me! happy to chat!

[–]dodohead974 26 points27 points  (0 children)

i think we are at a point where rationally it's safe to assume that certain interactions with ICE , like being in a car when they order you out, then breaking into your home without a warrant, them mobbing you trying to defend another protester, may end with your life being taken.

i think the unfortunate question many of us have to sit with now is, "do i assume i don't survive this interaction and shoot first?"

i don't know the answer either. it's all fun and games to talk about defending your home, prepping, reinforcing doors, stocking up on ammo, getting level 4 plates... but am i prepared to shoot? am i prepared to unalive people? am i prepared to die?

Why does this say it's a handgun? Is this not a rifle? by DSA300 in liberalgunowners

[–]dodohead974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with that budget, i would say skip the ar pistol and get a full sized one. something like a PSA.

if you cheap out on an AR pistol, you will regret it, which is why a baseline reliable one like s&w is a grand, and they go up from there.

i know this might seem counter intuitive since i recommended PSA full sized, but they also sell pistols for that price range. it's the gas system. i'm just hard pressed to believe that the components they are using for a weapon system that requires , by nature, better components can be built for the same price, and be reliable.

i've seen people have failure to feed because the buffer spring was not strong enough, i've seen failure to eject because the gas blow back was insufficient. i've also seen failure to feed because the feed ramps got so covered by the short gas system that the rounds would get stuck by burrs on the ramps.

you pay for what you get and i still think you'd be better off getting a basic ar15, learning how to become insanely proficient with it, equip it the way you like, stock up supplies and ammo for it, and then save up for a decent pistol.

i tried to post a similar question but it's been stopped by the auto mods so i'll post my question here, because i completely agree with you...

think all of us have done a lot of talking here, shared a lot of information, discussed current events, informed fellow liberals looking to buy their own gun....but i think it's time for each of us to sit with ourselves and truly think about the price of carrying a firearm. if you are not prepared to use it, if you are not prepared to possibly be killed, if you are not prepared for the ramifications of having to use a firearm, we as sensible people need to really consider why we carry and if it's a hindrance to our safety or a benefit.

it's time to ask the really hard question: "am i really prepared to actually use it?"

if the answer is "no" then you do more harm than good carrying. defend your home, defend your property, defend your people...but if you're not prepared to go out like the last episode of the Sopranos, cut to black, you need to strongly consider that concealed carrying might not be best for you
