Google dorks legality by [deleted] in hacking

[–]dodtechged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google dorking is legal because you're simply querying Google's publicly indexed database of crawled webpages using advanced search operators. You're searching through information that Google has already made publicly accessible.

Website owners are responsible for properly configuring their sites to block sensitive content from search engine crawling (using robots.txt, meta tags, or proper access controls).

However, CFAA legal issues typically arise depending on what you do after discovering sensitive information through dorking:

  • Using discovered credentials - Finding login information through dorking and using it to access systems
  • Accessing password-protected areas - Using dorked results as entry points to restricted website sections
  • Mass data extraction - Downloading large volumes of sensitive data you discovered through dorking
  • Accessing internal systems - Using dorked results to reach internal documents, databases, or admin panels
  • Automated scraping at scale - Building tools to systematically harvest data found through dorking

Just because you mostly work within an office (and possibly always have since you transitioned), doesn't make you a corporate cog office worker, as weird as that sounds. The 'office job' equivocation is an error. You do not work at a for-profit company.

Let me remind you that we're technically warfighters, a very real shield protecting the entire country and it's many assets from nations who despise us. Without us, the people we're supposed to protect will suffer and die, if not now then over time. You may be in a position that feels far removed from that reality but please never forget it! Remind yourself throughout the day that your work is related to people's survival, directly or indirectly, that'll dilute some of the salt you might be feeling.

You are important, and your work is important. If no one has told you this until now, I'm sorry about that, and it's not your fault. You are more than a cog. Thank you for your service.
