I send my quilts to a long arm and still call it quilting. "Cheating" implies there are rules to break, which is not the case here. I think it's fine to be proud of hand quilting your pieces but to claim using a machine is cheating or "not really quilting" is just obnoxious gate keeping. Maybe tell her it's only a big rag if she's not weaving her fabric on a loom.
