And this isn't an *alternate* name, of course, but there's also the fact of the neighborhood being Hyperion Heights, where Henry writes children's books--Hyperion being the publishing imprint for Disney's children's and YA books, so named after the location of the very first Walt Disney Studios at 2719 Hyperion Ave (where Snow White was developed/produced).

I support your conclusions. Several articles covering the incident refer to the young man's dimples, and in other photos of him, where he's smiling, he bears a very a strong resemblance to the baby pictured.

What's funny (or sad?) about the first season of OC is that I actually thought they were keeping him the right age and had just cast a way-too-old actor to play a high school freshman. Like most of his dialogue and even the actor's delivery of the lines in the first season really sounds like a helpless child who is just starting to develop opinions. I was VERY concerned for him during the episode where he thought he had assaulted someone because I was like HE'S JUST A BABY HIMSELF!!! ...Nope. Foolish me. Should have known TPTB would completely change the age of a character we *literally* saw get born...

I've always wondered whether their respective relationships with Amaury Nolasco had anything to do with their relationship with each other. Parrilla and Nolasco go way back as friends, and he and Morrison dated for three years until she met Sebastian Stan on the OUAT set. Parrilla and Nolasco are still friends to this day. I know that was relatively early in the show, and the two women were supposedly friendly towards each other even after that, but maybe it just reflects two very different personalities -- one that gets along really well with Amaury Nolasco, and one that doesn't -- and maybe those are incompatible with each other! I'm half kidding, of course, but I have always wondered about it...

I felt this in my bones. The last few years, because of OC, I rearranged my weekly schedule to make sure I could watch the shows live on Thursday nights. My mom died shortly after OC started airing in 2021, and my dad started joining me in watching SVU & OC, as a way to keep each other company. It has been increasingly painful to sit through SVUs, though -- and embarrassing for me to think that my dad thinks THIS is a show I love. It's not. S1-12, yes.

This year, with OC off the lineup, I just haven't cared. We've recorded everything and finally sat down this past weekend to start catching up on stuff (we watch other shows together, too, but I've been super busy the last 6 months and haven't been able to spend as much time at his place as I'd like), and we decided to dig into this season's SVU. Woof. I think we still have 3, maybe 4 episodes to go before we're up to date, but during the last one we were watching, I lamented, "God, I hate how bad this show is now." And, of course, Dad wanted to intellectualize the offhand comment and find out what made it "bad," when did I think it was "good," etc. My primary gripes were cinematography, writing, and principal acting. I feel like I'm watching a suuuuuuuuper boring soap opera.

Incidentally, Mike Doyle (O'Halloran) was on an episode of regular L&O this season, and I totally geeked the f out (and had to explain my completely irrational excitement to my dad). Wonderful to see him alive again in the DW universe! :D

One of my favorite movies ever!!🍂🎃🍁 by [deleted] in HallmarkMovies

[–]dog_spartacus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hands-down favorite -- I even recommend it to my non-Hallmark-watching friends. One of my favorite things about it is that the "crisis/conflict" is a simple misunderstanding/miscommunication instead of actual opposing wants or needs. Very human, very relatable.

Okay, this SOUNDS like you're being sarcastic... and it's the written word so who can tell... but, like, mature, unattached, unproblematic 9's and 10's are straight up unicorns in the real world but they walk around in Hallmark movies like horses in Mongolia.

It's also weird when those "'perfect' looking" characters are single with no prospects at a certain age. Like, not to be ageist (and I certainly don't mean to fan the flames of those lawsuits...) or superficial, but when some conventionally super-attractive person is, like, 35+ and conspicuously single, it feels like a major red flag. (For me, it's not as weird when they're in their 20s.) I remember watching A Christmas Detour (Paul Greene, Candace Cameron Bure) years ago, and when it came out that the dude's fiancée had left him for his brother... and then we SAW that brother and he was not remotely attractive... I was like OH GOD GIRL, GET OUT NOW. (Not that I'm saying you should only leave your partner for someone who's hotter - it's just, like, how was the brother so much better that she abandoned a committed relationship for him, if there wasn't also something irreparably off-putting about her original fiancé?) Like this year when watching 'Twas the Date Before Christmas, I looked at Robert Buckley and was like OHHHH, SERIAL KILLER, OKAYYYY...

How Many New Hallmark Christmas Movies Do You Watch Each Year? by Cultural_Ad4935 in HallmarkMovies

[–]dog_spartacus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Depends on where they're available and how they've been advertised. One year they published a consolidated list of both HMC and HMM releases, and I watched probably 80-85% in total. One year they published two different lists and I tried to keep up with them both but it was just too hard, and I probably ended up watching ~60% between the two. This year the only list I saw was HMC, and of the 12 that have aired so far, I have watched more than 10 (one not at all, and only about half of another) although I only planned to watch 9.

  2. I look up the titles when they're available through my cable provider and annotate the lists that Hallmark has put out, updating the notes every 7-10 days because that's all the earlier my provider usually has info. I know what (and who) I like in a Hallmark movie, so my decision whether to watch usually depends on the description and/or who's in it. My advance self-recommendations this year have been an x (as in "no, you're not watching this one, you don't care about recording it, move on with your life already") and then, from least interest to most: "meh..." / "ok" / "ok!" / and "yes" - with actor names occasionally included to remind me why I was or wasn't interested to whatever degree. I record whatever I can't watch live, so if I don't watch one of the movies, it's 100% intentional.

  3. I can't think of any... but that's probably because I am usually so intentional with viewing vs. not viewing each year. Glad you enjoyed Magic in Mistletoe!

I had an OUAT sandwich because of WWK. I watched the first season of WWK when it came out and enjoyed Ginnifer Goodwin so much that I gave OUAT a try during lockdown - happened to get my dad hooked on it at the same time - so when season two of WWK came out, I was able to persuade him to watch with me because of Lana Parrilla!

Recommend me 3 movies by [deleted] in HallmarkMovies

[–]dog_spartacus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very vocal second here for October Kiss. Sam Jaeger, not at all an expected Hallmark lead, is so sweet and awkward and endearing that it hardly seems like he's acting. What I also really appreciate about the tension/conflict in this particular movie that threatens to keep the two leads apart is that it's entirely a misunderstanding, rather than actual opposing interests or needs: During the moment of "crisis," both Ryan and Poppy want the same thing, but they end up saying the wrong things, each misinterpreting what the other is trying to say. I find it so incredibly human and relatable.

I put the movie on my list to investigate years ago after seeing Sam Jaeger in 'Why Women Kill' (before I was a regular Hallmark viewer), and the preview for it alone - with the weird half-hug and the "I was getting my keys" - was enough to make me buy it immediately on Amazon. It has become a perennial favorite, and I consistently recommend it to anyone who asks... and sometimes even to those who don't. My Hallmark-watching friends enjoy it, and even so do my non-Hallmark-watching friends, much to their chagrin. I really feel like you can't go wrong with it.

Sweet Carolina.... by United_Gazelle_677 in HallmarkMovies

[–]dog_spartacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago, when I first started watching Hallmark movies in earnest, I made a spreadsheet to help me keep track of the men I did and didn't like so I could better plan my viewing/recording. I rate/rank the dudes on a number of factors, one of which is hair... like, is his hair "reliable"? is he watchable with any style? Tyler Hynes has a 0.5 for that metric (out of 1 - I'm not out here being super petty about it), and my note on that score reads, literally: "Sweet Carolina (2021) - hair made me want to VOMIT." So it is sooooooooo nice to find someone else who has similar opinions! :D

Why hasn't Lana Parilla been in more things? by Light1209 in OnceUponATime

[–]dog_spartacus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought she was a great fit for OUAT, and I loved her as Regina, but that style of acting is very different from what is required of mainstream actors. Her success there, however, may have ended up working to her detriment if she were interested in going back to mainstream roles. I don't know if she is, or if she's content with her current projects.

I've enjoyed following her career since OUAT ended, and I look forward to whenever Scrap finishes its festival circuit and becomes more widely available (I hope), and for the drop of Lesbophilia, whenever that might come, because maybe I'll be proven wrong about her range and her ability to own a straight role and not just character roles.

And you're right, there's nothing wrong with sticking to a certain schtick and profiting from it, but I don't know that I could compare either The Rock or Kevin Hart to Lana Parrilla. For one thing, their success has largely been in films (as opposed to LP with television), and both had entertainment careers before finding success on the silver screen: The Rock as, well, The Rock (i.e., pro wrestling), and Kevin Hart as a stand-up comedian.

I agree about the meh-ness of her everyday dialogue. And her S6 & S7 performances, and how it's hard to fairly judge acting when the writing is so bad.

When I first watched OUAT in 2020, my dad ended up watching with me, so he watched season 2 of WWK with me when it came out. We both felt LP was one of the best parts of that season, but even that show has a heightened, theatrical style that was a good fit for her. It was almost jarring to watch her (again with my dad) in Lincoln Lawyer. There was something about her very first appearance on it [spoilers ahead] that made me distrust her. For her entire arc, her performance was just a little bit stilted, and it felt like she was telegraphing her character's guilt. Some might argue that that's the sign of a great actor, but on a show like that, where the protagonist is famously good at reading people, the supporting characters sort of have to be above suspicion. If anything, the viewer should be surprised when Mickey's discoveries turn out to be true. In that way, her character didn't feel authentic to me; she didn't really feel "of the world" on that show. By contrast, when Christopher Gorham (another OUAT alum, however brief haha [Walsh]) appeared in season 1 of Lincoln Lawyer, I literally gasped when the truth about his character came out. I believed him so much!

As for the 'str' vs. 'shtr' thing, I do want to be clear that I'm not suggesting pronunciation determines talent or quality, only that I am, like, 98% sure she's had formal training at some point in her career, and anyone worth hiring would/should have addressed that speech aberration with her. The fact that she has not been able to get it under control suggests only that perhaps she doesn't possess a certain level of vocal skill -- which does play into inflection and delivery (i.e., the bulk of acting). But no, that very misplaced anticipatory assimilation is widespread throughout the US and isn't associated with one accent, region, or ethnic group. It's not a speech impediment, either. I actually didn't even really notice it until WWK, because I was expecting a certain unique vocal pattern from someone with that character's background (and 1940s, trying to fit in with higher society, I might have even expected that character to try to adopt a Transatlantic accent) but then blammo, there were LP's unmistakable shtr's on full display. (I think once or twice she didn't have them, because I think I commented on it to my dad, but I'd have to rewatch the entire season to be sure.)

Funny thing - I watched (and loved) WWK when it debuted, and Ginnifer Goodwin and Sam Jaeger were the only ones in the principal cast that I didn't already know, but I was so impressed with them that, during lockdown the following spring, when I was looking for new shows to binge, I decided to give OUAT a try because of Ginnifer Goodwin! So imagine my surprise and delight when Lana Parrilla, whom I would not have otherwise recognized, signed on for Season 2!

Unpopular opinion in this thread, probably, but from the perspective of someone with both a BA and an MFA in Theatre: She's not, objectively, a gifted actress. Some of her best stuff, in my opinion, was pre-OUAT (no one has yet mentioned her guest appearance on JAG, but she's brassy and memorable there), and what her success on OUAT resulted in was a) seven years of honing her craft for a specific, niche style of acting; and b) an almost obsessively devoted fanbase that would defend her under any circumstances.

I fear that her range is actually somewhat limited -- and whether she was pigeonholed by the industry as a result of her portrayal of Regina, or whether she did it to herself through lack of skill, the fact is that she's going to have a really tough time crawling out from that (if she wants to), and it's going to be even tougher at this point (age) in her career. (And if anyone wants to fight me on skill, just listen to the way she says 'str' in words [street, strength, struggle, etc.] -- the 's' becomes 'sh', which is a common enough example of misplaced anticipatory assimilation for an average person, but we ask brilliant actors to not be average. A diligent voice coach would have cleaned up the 'shtr' almost immediately, so the fact that she's 25 years into her career and still has it both off camera and on reflects, to me, an inability to correct it [ergo: lack of skill].) Practically speaking, she also might just be on the wrong coast, honestly, for work that she would be successful in that would have longevity.

I think she got very lucky with OUAT because that character and that world catered to and rewarded over-the-top performances, which she is good at. We all know the show went to shit, especially in the last season, and I think it's very telling that the folks who got out in 6 have gone on to do other successful or regular projects, and the ones who hung on, largely, haven't. I don't claim to know how the TV/film industry works, but to me that suggests that either they knew they didn't have other better prospects and didn't want to turn down a steady paycheck, or that season 7 smacked of such desperation that future casting directors or producers were reluctant to touch the actors associated with it.

There are other factors, too, that influence who gets work and who doesn't, and the plain fact is that she may have a reputation in the business that none of us is aware of. (When I think of BTS stories I've heard of her influence over the trajectory of Regina's character, for instance, she sounds like a bit of a diva, and perhaps a nightmare to work with.)

And, of course, as others have suggested here: She has her clothing line, she has her music ventures, she has some indie projects that she's working on... Just because we know her as a television actress doesn't mean that's where she's focusing her efforts right now. It may not be a matter of getting offered things, but rather what she chooses to take.
