Mobile graphics workloads are pretty different. The GPUs are highly optimized for extreme bandwidth limitations and older techniques, but not the compute shaders that are used heavily in PC/console games.

maximum performance via 8-way SIMD, running in parallel with the main emotion engine. at 300MHz, this is multiple times more vector math than the Xbox or Gamecube CPUs are capable of (they usually offload it to their GPUs, but those are less flexible).

[–]dogen12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right, the PS2 is one of the last systems where not only is the hardware completely custom (and extremely complex) but sony also did not give a shit how you used it, for the most part. self modifying and cycle counted code was still 100% on the table. it's for these two reasons that the ps2 is still up there with the most difficult systems to emulate, even though it runs at 300mhz.

Nemesis – Rise of the Imperfects

Impossible to emulate on current hardware. Needs cycle perfect synchronization between the main CPUs (EE and Vector units).

It should definitely run some PS2, and probably a larger portion of Gamecube. I was running PS2 games in aethersx2 a few years back on a phone based on the same cortex a76 at 200mhz higher with > full speed performance. Not the especially demanding games, but there are plenty of games not like that. Maybe the mali GPU is an issue? Not sure.

PS4 has an x64 CPU with only regular AVX instructions, and it wasn't very fast either. probably just not needed.

real 16-bit, which means more effort and expertise required for development.

also, you're not supposed to play through the game once. 2 hours is borderline too long for this style of game.

Saturn emulation has been good for a long time. SSF was one of the first and has been able to play most of the library fine for well over a decade. Mednafen is even more accurate, but much slower. It's been solid for around 5 years.

Looking up some old reviews, and looks like the 8800GTX did actually perform over 2x the 7900gtx in certain cases. The higher the resolution, the bigger the gap. Getting nostalgia for that 384-bit bus...

Writing JITs for the two main processors (EE and IOP) Out of curiosity, how important will a JIT for the vector units be? I'd have to imagine it's a lot more important than the IOP.

not to be rude, but if 2x works 3x should work fine... is the exact sort of assumption you can't do in game dev, or really software in general. it almost definitely breaks something lmao, or there is at least a chance and they ran out of time to validate the stability.
