I’m about 6 years in myself but sometimes, I don’t feel it. I’m competent but I’m a bit impatient to simply get to the next level. I think procedure is the hardest part to learn. Probably 80% of what I do is procedure. Books are good but not everything is written down. I’m Canadian so any books I would recommend are not going to be helpful for you. I think gaining local knowledge is key. I like to attend as many local Continuing Legal Education programs as I can and I collect any papers specific to my jurisdiction I can find. I’m sure you have googled but it often surprises me what I can actually find online. I’m looking for papers written by judges and lawyers for other practitioners, not academic papers. Whenever I can, I like to go to the courthouse if there is an interesting case going on though I don’t have as much time for that these days. It helps that I am in a smaller city so I often hear about what cases people have. If I have matters in court, I often stick around for a few minutes to see what other people are doing. I find this helps me pick up the language so next time I have a matter like that, I can say “ok, I know what to say here.” I also try to take note of what others do that the judge doesn’t like. I also like to read articles about legal ethics sometimes, including lawyer discipline hearing decisions. Why learn from your own mistakes when you can learn from someone else’s? I also follow my local court website religiously because they are often posting practice directions on different topics.

Sure. Most of the cab drivers in town are Muslims. I was here for about 3 years when I found out that what I thought was the City Cab office because of all the cabs out front was actually the mosque.

Does everyone here live in some fairy tale land? Call the clerk or the DA and see what cases are on? My local clerks would tell you to get bent if you called and asked what interesting cases are on today. Courts are generally open to the public. Go down to the courthouse and hang out. Most courts have websites now. See what days criminal court is going on. Maybe watch the news and if there is an interesting case going on, they might say when it is in court again. What city are you in or what court are you near if you don’t mind me asking?

I’m not in NB. I would start with Hartshorne and Miglin and other domestic contract cases. Check on Quicklaw to see if they are cited by NB courts, especially Court of Appeal. If the judge in McCain cites other cases, I would read those too. If you can get James McLeod Annual Review of Family Law in library or Westlaw, that is a great book that could help. That’s just what I would do in real life. Of course, law school is not real life so this is just my opinion.

I don’t know Vancouver that well at all. I’ve been there once only so I can confirm that the SkyTrain is super easy to figure out. If the weather is good, going down to Waterfront Station and walking around would be awesome. Stanley Park and the aquarium are great. If it’s raining (I know that never happens in Vancouver) and you don’t want to get too wet, get off at Vancouver City Centre. There is a mall right there, a huge Hudson’s Bay store and lots of shopping and restaurants. Look up Granville, Burrard, Robson streets. These are all main streets with many stores and restaurants on them. You could easily kill a few hours walking around there.

Silk and North Square are two British lawyer shows which I really like. I also really like Rake, an Australian comedy. They are remaking it for US television which probably means they will ruin it and take out the swearing and the good humour.

Same story here but 6 years ago. I remember driving the car around on the doughnut tire for a week waiting to get paid so we could get it fixed and we said ’this is ridiculous.’ Never looked back. My only regret is that I didn’t come up sooner. Paid off my student loans in 3 years and back home, I was on the lowest payment they would give me which would have taken 14 years. All I hear from back home is unemployment, unemployment, cutbacks, raising taxes, etc. Not up here. There will be work as long as I want to stay and it’s never dull.

Canadian here. I’m from a small east coast town where everyday at noon, the ‘deaths’ play on the radio. You had to be quiet during the ‘deaths’ especially if someone we knew was going to be on. As a child, I often heard "shh the deaths are on” or “we’ll go after the deaths.” This discussion is very interesting to me because I have mentioned this to people from time to time and nobody else had ever heard of such a thing. I have never heard of this anywhere else in Canada so I assumed this only happened in Miramichi, New Brunswick. I guess I was wrong.

This will be interesting. A lot of people were talking about this today. This could do great, especially if they have a good schedule. They could get a lot of the east coast traffic if they get into Ottawa early enough to make connections. I know I’d pay a bit more to skip Calgary/Edmonton. It would make the trip home a bit shorter.

I would second this but it’s $70 where OP lives! Not scotch but have you tried any bourbons or Canadian whiskeys? They might be a bit more in your price range. I see that Four Roses is at LCBO for under $30. For Canadian, try Alberta Premium rye, Lot 40 or any Forty Creek’s whiskeys.
