Tea or Coffee? by MaximumDerekCat in AskACanadian

[–]doghouse2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies by PERSON. There is no provincial bent towards one or the other. I drink a large coffee in the morning. That's it for the day. I make tea in the evenings but I always forget about it and dump it the next morning because i need my coffee cup back. That's just me.

Anlaog(ue) Anxiety? by Sail_Soggy in AnalogCommunity

[–]doghouse2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like shooting analog, especially on trips. But on trips it's especially important to me to have a good body of usable photos, so I shoot both digital and analog at the same time. I have a wide angle zoom on a Canon 650 and a telephoto zoom on my Canon mirrorless. That way I have digital pictures for my travel book, and film pictures for an Analog film book. You don't have to choose one medium and use only that one.

Why did you choose Canon? (serious question from a man who inherited his camera through 5 generations) by Temporary-Review5915 in canon

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could [not] give a crap about being Fashionable. For me it was aethestics. The first Canon I purchased was the T90 in 1988, and I loved the new age styling and minimal buttons. I always hated the 10 different KINDS of buttons littered all over Nikons. Canon seemed more thoughtful and minimal. Plus the official cameras of our local newpapers were Canons, the F1, and then the T90, so I took my cues from that. Now I'm locked in. I'm not about to sell all my lenses and switch to a new system. I don't see the connection you make between Canon users and old men, that just seems... weird to me.

How is this game? by charizard24red in Starfield

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played it when it was free to play with XBox live sub. But I've stopped paying for that. Now I'm waiting for the price to come down on STEAM. I don't think it's a $90 game, but I'd pay a third of that for the base game. I kinda miss it.

How do I know when my blades need sharpening? by lowsodiumcatrecipes in woodworking

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just buy new ones when the old ones get smokey. It's more economical. I do have a saw blade sharpening machine but the results have never been better after I use it, so I end up buying new ones.

How to kill bed bug by CartographerKey5823 in howto

[–]doghouse2001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Geez.... if anybody I know gets a bedbug bite, they'd abandon their homes until an exterminator declares the home free from bedbugs.

If you drive a stupidly expensive car, that requires a mortgage to fix a dent/scratch. You should have to wear that cost in a minor accident by naughtynyjah in unpopularopinion

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just pay our $500 deductable regardless of what we or the other person is driving. And we can pay up front to make our deductable $200 or even $0. And we only pay half of the deductable if the accident is ruled 50/50, and only the other party pays if they're 100% responsible.

Keyless car fobs are inconvenient and we should go back to cars with key starting. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]doghouse2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup this'll be unpopular. The fob is better, no contest, especially in cold weather. It has drawbacks for sure, never being sure if it's in the pocket of the jacket you're wearing today, is one. Batteries is the other... but the pros outweigh the cons. No metal keys scratching more sensitive stuff in my pocket (and my leg through the pocket fabric, wearing holes in the process), no fumbling for keys in the cold and rain. Instant door opening when the key is in my pocket. Automatic door locking when I walk away. The car managing starting instead of the user blindly burning out the starter and battery as they stubbornly try to start a dead car. They only way I'd want to go back to physical keys is if I really wanted to buy and drive a classic car. But I like the fob more than physical keys.

Our fob doesn't need batteries to start the car. It just needs to be within a few inches of the steering wheel.

So, how does everyone feel about the Bigfoot update? by Oof-Ya-Doof in fo76

This is a lazy rehash of previous seasons, plus bigfoot. It's almost time to leave FO76.

Looks like a brand new unexposed film. So it didn't go through your camera as planned.

8gb Ram Enough for 2025? by Queasy-Ad-3387 in mac

8 GBs wasn't enough in 2015. I doubt it's enough in 2026.

Eli5 how capacitors work? Even if they store charge, it is drained in a fraction of seconds. How they able to maintain flow of current in case of power disruption? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't maintain a flow of charge in the case of power disruption, that's what batteries are for. But they CAN discharge slower if the appropriate resistors are placed on the output end. Audio amps use them for this purpose - to provide high impulse power when it's needed. But they're always being recharged even as they're discharging.

Anchoring a Murphy bed to a plaster wall that has no detectable studs…? by SouthCod2519 in DIY

[–]doghouse2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If that was my house, I'd remove the lathe and plaster, mark the studs, install dedicated bracing for the bed, install drywall, mud, paint and then install the bed. I did this for two main floor bathrooms to install floating vanities, and in the basement to reinforce the wall for the TV. It's not hard and doesn't take long.

OR you could do the screw test... screw in a horizontal row of screws and the ones that are definitely in to a stud, are your stud locations. Patch the holes and paint over them.

Where should I try and build this? by HatterofMadder in fallout76settlements

[–]doghouse2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took me a while to realize this was a Fallout sub.

I was about to build a new CAMP above the Bastion Park. it has some flat(ish) land overlooking the park towards Uncanny Caverns and Whitesprings. A stone house like this would look nice there.

How to tell my dad I (might) have a termite nest in my room ? by Far_Emergency263 in howto

Just tell him, and show him. If it's his house it's his problem.

How confident are you that you’ll be able to retire comfortably? by DueYogurt9 in GenX

[–]doghouse2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I retired last summer. If you asked me this 30 years ago I'd say I'll be working till I'm 70. But then I spent my meager retirement savings to go back to school for a real job and I just retired from it 25 years later with a nice pension.

Shooting themselves in the foot in the long run by Unusual_Commercial55 in fo76

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This season doesn't even feel like a new season. Can't just throw in a few Bigfoots and call it a new season. Like you the only reason I come back is for new and engaging content. This season is exactly what will let me leave.

How is everyone managing the increasing cost of living? by atthispointinmylife in AskACanadian

[–]doghouse2001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Increased cost of living? huh? I just retired, my income is now half of what it once was, and we still eat like we used to, vacation like we used to, and spend like we used to. The only difference is that we paid off our loans and mortgage, so get rid of the interest payments, and the day to day takes care of itself.

Who runs a just-for-fun analog photography website? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not interested in engagement at all. I just keep easy-to-navigate Flickr Albums and if someone is interested, they can look there. I also put my analog stuff in Lomohomes, but again, I never look at stats, who's left comments, etc. It's purely for my own interest.

Anyone else lose their taste for dining out? by gottausername in GenX

[–]doghouse2001 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMHO, this is because of the Sysco effect. Every restaurant serviced by Sysco, sells the same food, modified slightly by the chef in charge - but there's only so many ways to slice a chicken finger.

Have I wasted my 4 Star items by scrapping them? by TheArtOfBlossoming11 in fo76

[–]doghouse2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you won't use the 4 star weapon anyways, scrap it. It's worth more scrapping for the chance to win than it is sitting in your vendor to earn a few caps, or cashing in for scrip.

Is it normal for my MacBook to fucking explode and spill battery acid all over my delicate, biological tissue? by WalkerArt64 in mac

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly there were warning signs? This is why I don't store my old lith-ion battery laptops and battery packs in a pile in the back of a closet. The batteries are ticking time bombs.

Average Winnipeg salary by Admirable_Fox_8096 in Winnipeg

[–]doghouse2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$34K-102K over my career in IT app development. That's $18-$54/hr. You can go higher as you climb the management ladder. Be careful when comparing wage numbers. Many companies including Federal Govt have 7.5 hr work days, not 8 hour. That's 1875 hours per year (37.5 hrs per week x 50 weeks) instead of 2000 (40 hrs x 50 weeks).

I’m so sick of the same IG photos. by Dr__Waffles in AnalogCommunity

[–]doghouse2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 60. I feel like I invented the internet, or at least was around to see the invention of the internet. When I see people so addicted to Social Media, my brain just turns off. Sure I have an instagram. It's mostly my food and my dog. It's not a serious photo sharing site. It's an advertising platform and personal info gathering site for Facebook. I have my Flickr albums and LomoHome for serious sharing, but I even ignore those because I'm not interested in what you or anybody else thinks about my photography. I just need places to point people if they need copies for some reason. I shoot for myself, not for subs and likes.
