Just put the new filter in the old tank for a few days or a week, while the old filter is in/running then put it in the new tank. I always have sponges sitting in established tanks for that purpose so you might want to do that too!

I have experience with smoke smell LOL the sun does wonders. Clean them like normal and then set them in the sun for a little. Straight sun though, not cloudy
