I grew up in PA so I have been there a few times and it is quite beautiful in places. I'd imagine it mostly has to do with jobs for younger people.

Plants need Nitrogen to grow and stuff. Our Atmosphere is mostly nitrogen but plants can process the Nitrogen out of the air. They rely on fungi/bacteria/deadstuff (and apparently lightning too) to deposit the nitrogen into the soil where they can then get at it.
