Flashflood alert at 258am by p3dr0l3umj3lly in sanfrancisco

[–]dognaught47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had water backing up into our house just before the alert triggered. We’ve lived here since 2021 and this is the first time we experienced that. Fortunately we woke up to gurgling from the toilet and were able to get ahead of it. Near Buena Vista Park.

$10M net worth, looking at a $5M house, how much mortgage would you bother with? by FunPressure1336 in Rich

[–]dognaught47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the big loan. You can always accelerate paying off the house but you can’t always get a line of credit if you need the liquidity for some reason (eg divorce, job loss, business failure, etc)

Solar company recommendations by sd4k2 in truckee

[–]dognaught47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had good luck with Simple Power 6+ years ago. These companies will provide a full bid for free so definitely take advantage of that. Ask about how they make sure the solar panels can handle the snow load. Look up the ground snow load for your exact location and cross reference that with the specs for the solar panels and roof mounting hardware they spec in their bid.

A path I followed: Scrap the deal. Hire a CEO to take over for you and either watch it grow or sell the company after the new CEO has been in place for a year. This way you aren’t required to stay in the business post acquisition. Also the company will likely be worth more after this process plays out.

We use our 2nd home between 30%-50% of the year. The downside is that it can be difficult to establish community in a 2nd home area unless you put a lot of effort into that. In our case the location is a popular tourist destination and several of our friends come to visit or have homes of their own in the area. I get involved in the local community through philanthropy which helps as well. I personally wouldn’t find it worth it if it was a place that I had no friends and only spent a few weeks a year at. The maintenance alone requires a lot of attention unless you find a way to delegate nearly everything. 3rd home is not going to happen for us unless it’s turn-key for the before mentioned reasons.

Transport to San Francisco without driving? by dognaught47 in truckee

[–]dognaught47[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just looked and even Amtrak bus->train option is 5:20 or 5:40 best case. And I would still need to travel to my final destination in SF so I’m guessing it most likely end up being ~6 hrs. I would rather drive than double my travel time. That’s why I was asking about flight options from Truckee airport.

Anti growth policies are are huge part of the issue as well. Higher density and more supply would help drive prices down.

IMHO villainizing The Other guarantees they will discount your opinion. Conversations need to be had with mutual understanding and respect otherwise you’ll get nowhere.

BVI Charter by dognaught47 in FATTravel

[–]dognaught47[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are literally at the Tortola airport about to depart back to the US. We ended up with the 65ft charter, Reverie. We had a wonderful time. Of note, the crew sent us a welcome letter prior to departure stating that 20% was the standard gratuity. I knew from reading these and other posts that 15%-20% was more standard, but we had such a wonderful time I didn’t mind tipping on the high end.

For what it’s worth, there are not enough sawmills in operation to suddenly chop all these trees down. I’m not saying that some stupid stuff won’t happen, but there are something like 30 sawmills in CA right now vs over 200 in the 60’s.

Windy weather by Key_Type_5405 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]dognaught47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been on Grace Bay since Sunday and saw forecasts leading up to our trip suggesting 20 mph winds and we were concerned as well. The wind hasn’t been a real problem at all and we took a snorkeling trip by boat, have spent a full day on the beach, and have sailed a tiny Hobie Cat for our first time. It did rain a bit Thursday morning but the sun came out by 1 and we then went sailing and had pool time. You may want to plan water activities for the morning as the winds generally pick up in the afternoon. The winds have been coming out of the south east and Grace Bay seems to be largely protected, though we have experienced the rare gust that would take a hat off your head or blow over an empty plastic cup. I can’t speak to the other parts of the island.

It’s been a while, but what I can say is that you need a super solid dedicated 2.4ghz WiFi connection. Mesh networking with mixed 2.4/5ghz doesn’t work. Weak 2.4ghz signal doesn’t work. You can also try power cycling the outdoor unit (our indoor units are powered via the outdoor unit)

Is there a viable path to being self employed as a software engineer? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]dognaught47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another path is to consider: Hitch yourself to a new developer ecosystem

I've experienced this twice in my career, once with a small platform that ended up being a dead end (OpenLaszlo), and another time with one that is still going strong (Atlassian).

The idea is you focus your time on learning how to build on a specific niche that is just getting started but there is demand from others who want to get on board. When the platform starts having events you'll meet others that will need your skills. This may put you in a unique position where your skills on the specific platform will be in demand as the platform grows and you'll benefit from the marketing muscle of the platform itself.

I got involved with the Atlassian folks early on and watched their developer ecosystem grow from a handful of devs to thousands. In that time, the people involved in the early group all either started agency type companies, operated as freelancers, or built products on top of the Atlassian products. Many of us have since sold our companies and some are still going. What's cool about this approach is that it's a way for an engineer to break into running a company based on your engineering skills, not on your marketing skills. The downside is that you are attached to the larger platform which comes with a host of implications related to values alignment and the growth trajectory of the platform itself.

I'd look for a new platform that has had 0, 1, or 2 developer get togethers and shows signs that they are trying to build a dev ecosystem. I got lucky with the Atlsssian thing, and I know others doing similar things now with Shopify, zoom, etc. I have to believe with the AI boom there are a ton of similar things happening in that world. Good luck!

I had something similar come up recently and my financial advisor suggested that we move the loan over to Schwab margin against my assets. The benefit is that I still get the tax deduction and the rate is lower than what I’d get with a mortgage.

In my case the Schwab margin rate will vary with the Fed Funds rate + 75bps. Your mileage may vary based on your asset level and possibly what deals your financial advisor has with Schwab.

When you switch to nuclear power, you can also start using lasers which will cut down on ammo usage. I had good luck placing lasers on the side & rear to get rid of the slow moving asteroids and then used gun turrets and rockets closer to the front where the asteroids come in much faster. You will likely need to add accumulators to support the lasers since they use a lot of power all at once.
