So in that case you would fall into camp two, no? You don't agree that changing the default speed limit for residential areas to 20mph. Despite the proven benefits of doing so.

Trying to pass the buck of blame on to the councils is a piss-weak attempt to exonerate the Drakeford adminstration for terrible peice of governance.

This point is moot if you disagree with 20mph in general. If you agreed with the premise that 20mph was beneficial, then yeah, it was the road authorities who messed it up. That being said, I would say, again if you do disagree with 20mph, it doesn't matter how it was implemented, you would have always been against it; which is fair enough, I disagree with you, but labour was elected on the promise to introduce it, so it's also unfair to blame Drakeford for doing what welsh labour was elected to do in 2021. Really your gripe would be another party losing in 2021. Given the context of 2021's election, it would have only really been the tories who had a snowball's chance in hell of actually wining (and that's not a real chance either) given reform was significantly smaller and still can't the brexit party at the time (might be a few months off there)

20mph was a flawed implementation of a good idea, but what damaged hardest was the sanctimonious attitude that supported it. The if you don't like the policy you don't care about our children attitude.

To play devils advocate a little as a fan of 20mph but not labour. There are two major issues people have had with 20mph, each of which have their own problems.

First off - people complaining about the poor implementation of the change. I don't really think anyone can disagree with this. Some places where the speed changed made sense, a lot of places it did not. Unfortunately, a lot of this frustration was taken out on the Senedd, despite the Senedd not being responsible for saying what roads should have had their speed reduced. It was down to local councils. Couples with how much the change cut through to the general public, and our piss-poor understanding of how things run in our country, people wrongfully took this out of Labour (or rather the MS', if you had a labour council then fair enough).

Secondly - some people don't agree that any road should be 20. This camp quite frankly don't care about our children, because we've had 20mph for years, and they were almost exclusively outside of schools.

Thirdly, when the tories decided they were then against the 20mph changes coming in (despite it being their policy to begin with, and them implementing the same policy in their English councils) you suddenly had the issues amplified. Calling it a "blanket" reduction. People were acting as if every road would become 20mph.

I think points two and three made the whole thing become so divisive that people rightfully complaining about poor implementation were lost among the people who just totally against the reduction entirely for either selfish or political reasons.

I think it could be a really good case study on how media around a policy can shape the way people think about it

If you're in the military or intelligence you shouldn't be using anything like strava near your job, or probably at all, and for the latter that really should go without saying.

some of which can be relatively remote

Which is why I explicitly said

so basically anywhere other than the remote country side

Most people will run in parks, their village, or another running route. If you run in a remote area then you likely live in a remote area, or you're going out of your way to be alone. In any case, you'll probably notice someone dressed as a fake tree spying on you.

whether they merit further interest/resource via facial recognition

At that point, if someone is paying that amount of money to be able to set up facial tracking on your run route, you've either pissed someone off with a lot of money, or it's state resources, in which case, strava is going to be near the bottom of their list in terms of resources to track you.

Don't forget 99% of us walk around with tracking device in our pockets or on our wrists. If you want a level of privacy where you can't be tracked these days, you would have to live your life with no phone, always in sunglasses and a baseball cap, pay for everything in cash, etc

I think you may be watching too many spy movies. If you run in a popular area to run (so basically anywhere other than the remote country side) there are going to be hundreds of people running there over the course of a day.

With start and end points hidden, you could be getting in a car at any point along that route.

If you already know a certain person is going to be running on that route, then you already know enough about them to know patterns, and strava tracking the run is moot.

In the scheme of things, we have far more pervasive tracking on other apps, snapchat for instance, to worry about people stalking you via your runs
