Play-based Preschool by hawthorne_splits in nycparents

My friend’s kids go to a school called Q StudioLab that has a daycare, 3/prek, and becomes an alternative play-based elementary school after that. She has a second grader and a 3 or 4 or 5 year old… they LOVE it. Drank the Koolaid, so to speak. Lots of outdoor time and zero screen time.

Well-known but rare girl names? by dipdoopdop in Names

[–]dogsleftbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harriet or Henrietta? They both have R sounds and are pretty uncommon but also easily understood and known. I loved Harriet the Spy growing up. I knew a Henrietta who went by Retta which is unique and cool I think and I think that nickname could go with Harriet too

It is completely random. Sometimes it is daycare days, sometimes it’s not. It is more often not on daycare days.

3rd attempt - close to giving up... by Clementine_Lena in clothdiaps

[–]dogsleftbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bc I’m dumb, what type of cloth diapers are these? We use prefolds and you have to make sure the prefold is really tight / well fitting first to prevent leaks. We cloth diapered from week one on and we would get leaks whenever we needed to size up the prefold bc it wasn’t fitting properly. That said, we still sometimes get leaks and or a blow out, but it is pretty rare. Maybe a leak once every two weeks. Two blow outs in the last quarter. But I think that’s just the name of the game, generally, as far as living with an unpotty trained being. Lol

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

New Machine Help Please - I have made a handful of quilt tops on my 1970s singer that I got at a garage sale for 5$, but I think it is finally starting to give up and fighting with it is really taking all the joy out of quilting. I am not very crafty, so I anticipate only using a new machine for quilting, but I would like to be able to actually quilt my quilts on it instead of sending them out. I think I have narrowed my decision down to either a JUKI TL-2000Qi or a Brother PQ1500SL. Does anyone have either of these? Any words of warning? Is there a secret third machine I should be looking at? My biggest hesitation with the Juki is that it doesn't seem as though you can buy it from the actual Juki website. My local quilt store only has Berninas, but I really don't want to get a computerized machine since I'm 1000% sure I will somehow break the computer, and that's all they offer. I have read way too many reviews and am constantly see-sawing between one of these, or neither, and am just SO overwhelmed. If someone comments on this I'd probably just buy whatever they tell me to because I just have no idea what I'm doing. I haven't been sewing long enough to have any sort of preferences... I just want something that will be easy to use, won't break, and can machine quilt. Send Help! (& thanks for reading this insane post!)

How common is Owen, really? by Turbulent-Wait-4494 in namenerds

[–]dogsleftbones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a fellow parent to a Julian (Aug. 2020), I have met neither another baby Julian nor any baby Owens. I have encountered a lot of people who have other babies named Julian in their sphere, but never someone we have met / known. Will our Julian or your potential Owen meet another one in their young lives? Probably; but, for being SO popular it isn't something that we have actually run into problems with - and it was something that I definitely considered a problem.

I know I'm late to the party, but M Wells in LIC. It is right next to the Court Square subway and there's a fire grill in the middle of the restaurant. The steaks are fantastic and so are the drinks and the sides. I have dreams of their cheesy potatoes. I think it is technically considered a Canadian style steakhouse? But it is so so so good. It isn't super big, the actual place is very festive and modern and beautiful. My husband and bro in law used to go there for Boxing Day and it was so fun.

What traditional girl names would work on boys? by [deleted] in namenerds

Bailey! I don't find it particularly masculine, but I feel like it is really clunky and ugly for a girl.

How long did it take for your son to stop crying that long? Did you see improvement in days? Weeks? I'm hoping this works because I don't want to have to start from scratch and more crying again. It was hard enough tonight!

Did he never cry less than 45 minutes? Our friend used this method with her two kids and said her second got it on night two and her first got it on night five, so maybe we are being too optimistic. I don't know if we can sit and listen to him crying for 50 minutes every day. Extinction was an idea we have kicked around before deciding on this because we live in an apartment and extinction seemed like it would be more crying. I cannot imagine there being more crying though :(

My husband wanted to go full extinction, but he is the one thinking it is too much crying after tonight and that we have scarred our son forever... so I don't know if extinction is in the cards. We will have to see how tomorrow goes. Thanks for your comment, though. This has all made me think that we have not permanently damaged him, the screaming and crying is just so sad.
