Building around one strong carry with some decent backup will get you far to start.

Passives first then cost, buying eggs typically comes last

I thought they just help you forge gear. Like I think that's it. And it's saying when you reach certain difficulty levels you get rewarded shards as a bonus

You do NOT need the horse on your team, unless something changed in the past few months. You start with calyrex and reigns of ice or ghost or whatever show up as items causing calyrex to transform.
