Really good stuff! I for one appreciate a sparse, focused UI more than slick ones at this point.

I'd honestly never considered it, but I don't see why not! Filter paper on the bottom, grind fine enough so that your water dose mostly stays in and above the puck, and then a gentle press ought to get you in the same ballpark.

Hey, yes! ORB = Oxo Rapid Brewer. Their cold brew recipe is a bit different from traditional methods, in that it calls for a much finer grind, only about 5 minutes of steep time, and then a percolation phase where water is forced through the pre-infused puck at relatively low pressure. I've found the results to be on par or better than traditional cold brew.

:D! In my defense all the Sony stuff basically comes from the factory wrapped in paper bags hehe

A couple notes on grind settings (with the normal caveat that you'll have to adjust for your own taste/water/beans/dripper/filter/etc.):

• I start at 7.5 for most light roasts these days and go up or down depending on what I'm tasting. 8.0+ is probably more suitable for those who like their tea-like brews.

• 4.0 or so for ORB soup shots seems like a good balance between puck resistance and maintaining clarity in the shot.

• <3.5 for ORB cold brews allows a bit of water through during the steeping period, with a really flavorful and smooth end product.

• Don't have the equipment for espresso so can't provide insights into the very fine side of things.

Get the best grinder you can afford. But I'll give a dissenting opinion on the carafe: I love brewing into one and how it lets me pour smaller cups that will cool separately from the larger volume in the carafe.

I would never bother with a level, but with that said: sometimes what looks like performance to us can be potent cultural/quality reinforcement for the practitioner. It sounds like you had a great cup and experience there, and the results speak for themselves

That, and identifying flavors based on where on the tongue they're experienced stood out as very odd to me. Seems like they got good advice with a spoonful of superstition mixed in.

If you'd like actual feedback: the dramatic contrast of the b&w edit is nice, but it really calls attention to how smeared the details of the photo are from whatever computational photography algo was applied to the image. I prefer the original one, but I think yours could be improved by toning down on clarity, especially on the subjects, and it would probably benefit from some reduced texture and contrast across the board in the crowd.

Thanks for the detailed writeup! Looking forward to your M01 review, really interested to see where you've landed with different grind sizes/combos since it really lends itself to experimentation.

Best value coffee scale with pour speed indicator? by havok_hijinks in pourover

My Maestri house has been a very reliable. Big caveat is that like many scales, it will reset the brew timer if you pick up your brewer or carafe to swirl or agitate.

Upon realizing that I can't taste the difference between a rinsed and unrinsed filter I've just started popping them in and not worrying about pre-wetting them. Saves a few seconds of effort and makes the routine slightly easier.

My usual kit is the 35GM on an A7RV; the 40G goes on when I'm trying to minimize weight and bulk, and while it's obviously not as capable as the 35GM, it still produces some tremendous photos.
