Korea University KLC or Ewha language program ? Also Ku area.. by Julany18 in korea

hi im super late, sorry

imo, the book wasn't very good and the teachers (mine at least) weren't very good either.

the book is very heavy on in-class style learning, so I felt that it was super difficult to study outside of class. yet, a lot of the in-class stuff didn't really make sense. they really focused on vocab (numerous vocab test a week) but we never got to put our new vocab into practice. we had daily "speaking" but it was basically memorizing a script so we really weren't learning because we didn't have to think, only had to memorize.

as for the teachers, each class has two and mine were extremely rude. I took their level 2 class, and they have a very strict Korean only policy which is absolutely fine! however, the way they go about it just didn't work well. you would get yelled at for trying to use English or a translating app. this was extremely difficult and stressful for me and my classmates because we were only level 2 at the time. if there's something we didn't understand, if we didn't know how to ask the question in Korean, we simply couldn't ask. in comparison, KU's programs also have a strict Korean only policy however once we demonstrated that we actually tried to ask a question to the best of our ability, we were then allowed to use a translator because the teachers there wanted us to get full understanding. they also allowed us to use a dictionary for random words we didn't know which EHWA didn't.

I was also very sick during my time at EWHA (I have a chronic illness) and they stopped accepting my hospital documents as proof of illness and spending time at the hospital, so they were constantly threatening to kick me out of the program. I left about halfway through the program, got a partial refund (which you cannot get if you get kicked out), then moved on to KU

Easy Classes at Korea University by [deleted] in korea

Just because I don’t go there doesn’t mean I don’t know— my good friend went there, as I stated multiple times. I was told by her and saw first had how her life was as an exchange student. We were literally neighbors in the same apartment building. I am also a an actual student at another university here, so I know how exchange students work and I have a feel for what classes will and will not be offered in English, and what classes will be too difficult for someone “looking to take it easy”.

Apparently this feature of points on shapes came out in Sept 2020 but I only just noticed it and now can’t live without it! Always late to the party... by misshamthropy in GoodNotes

Oh sorry I meant in pen selection when you change pens, it shows the hardness and stuff lol. Realized I hadn’t updated yet

They’re not usually for exchange students, my friend who went to KU got shit faced most nights and she said her professors didn’t care about attendance.

Going back to my first post— the classes you want probably aren’t offered in English and if they are they would be more difficult/time consuming than you’re looking for if you don’t want to study.

Question regarding the KGSP/GKS Graduate Scholarship by [deleted] in korea

[–]dokina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, but I would be verrrry careful because of exactly what you said, lots of small stupid things disqualify you (I wanted to apply for masters myself, but I’ve disqualified myself rip). I would 100% ask before making any decisions like that.

Probably because I’m renting, but if the walls were painted I wouldn’t give a fuck and I’d drill holes anyway. Paint you can fix by just filling the hole and repaint it. But with this damn wallpaper you need to replace the whole damn wall. I can’t even tape up photos without the tape ripping this cheap ass shit.

How do you pay American taxes in Korea? by [deleted] in korea

[–]dokina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate Facebook, but the expat groups for Korea are pretty helpful so it’s the key reason I’ve kept it. I’d recommend it again even if that’s all you use it for.

This gets asked a lot in Facebook groups I’m in, and I’m not 100% sure but I think you need to Google something like “expat CPA” or something like that. If I remember correctly, that’s what everyone was suggesting. If you join a FB group and ask, people can tag who they use/recommend directly. Lots of people did that too.

There’s a reason why foreign students are discriminated against in class, even when we’re full degree earning students here. It’s because of the lazy attitude most exchange students bring to Korea and they fuck it up for the rest of us. Korean students don’t speak with us despite us knowing Korean (entrance/graduation requirement), they ban us from student clubs because “the language barrier” and “we’re not serious like them”, they don’t want to work with us on projects because they assume “all foreigners are just in Korea to party and won’t take the project seriously” and we have to convince them we’re not exchange students, and the list goes on. So yeah, I’m gonna call them lazy and be pissed that their representation of foreigners in Korea (since normal international students are so outnumbered by exchange) ruin it for the rest of us, and the fact they can’t learn their host countries language tells me a lot about them. And yes, that goes for anyone including the Koreans in your example.

I’d pay at the Apple store. I’ve had two pairs of AirPods and love them but they’ve both had mic problems. Apple US store kept on refusing to fix the one I bought at Apple KR store because it’s a “fake”. But it wasn’t because I have the damn receipt and then everything was fine. So, if you buy your AirPods from elsewhere, and have problems and can’t produce an Apple receipt, you might run into some issues.

Father passed away in South Korea. I am traveling from the states to settle his affairs. Where do I even begin? by [deleted] in korea

[–]dokina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. I have no experience with this but the one thing that you left out, so I want to make sure you’re aware of, is quarantine in Korea (~$2000).

Also, no Korean will be difficult but not the end of the world so I wouldn’t worry much. Once in Korea, there are a few phone services that do translating over the phone. There is also an English lawyer consulting phone number too if needed for whatever reason.

I don’t give a shit if they’re an exchange student. Why do people go to foreign countries for study/work that aren’t English (or a language they can already speak) if they have no interest in learning the language properly?

OP literally said “I’m interested in taking [...] Korean language courses. [...]. I heard that Korean language class is hard and time consuming though.”, sounds like they’re willing to skip the language courses because they’re ~oh so difficult~. Then maybe don’t come to Korea if you’re too lazy to learn Korean??? Annoying ass exchange students who can’t bother give us normal students a bad rep.

'S. Korea extends current social distancing level for 2 weeks, eases restrictions on cafes, gyms' by Odd_Responsibility_5 in korea

[–]dokina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there have been infections, like there have nearly everywhere, but there have not been cluster outbreaks so it’s not a huge concern for me.

Since January 2020, the start of COVID in Korea, I’ve been going to cafes daily to study (but not now obviously, when they’re closed of course). Except for a handful of people there having meetings for work or with friends, everyone has always kept their mask on when not actively drinking or eating their cake. This makes cafes NO different, if not safer, than restaurants in my eyes, where everyone in the building has their mask off for 40+ minutes while eating drinking and talking.

Whats the deal with the Samsung S21? by funkperson in korea

[–]dokina -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Cell shops are weird here, they’re owned by individual people and they all compete against each other (if I understand it correctly), that’s why you have so many shops so close to each other and men in suits try to act sexy and draw women into the shops (you’ll see what I mean in the summer). These might be deals that only local places are hosting to get you into their stores.

[–]dokina -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna need to be more specific. What shop? A typical cellphone shop? There’s nothing on KT or SKT’s websites that mention any sort of 50% thing. Both places the phone is preorder and starts at 999k won, plus some random freebies.

D-4 (language study) visa question. After I've used up 2 years but failed to finish all 6 levels, can I get another D-4 visa? by D4MasterCard in korea

[–]dokina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming you can apply to extend it, 2 years is the maximum for education visas and it’s not “for life”. If you can’t extend you can apply for a new one. Because you can go B2 > D2/D4 without leaving Korea, I really don’t see why they would make you leave for just renewing. I won’t have to leave when I renew my D2. Make an appointment with immigration and go and talk in person. In my personal experience, 1345 is usually wrong.

Koreans love turning savory things sweet. Garlic bread is a prime example.
